Dale Finucane

Dale Finucane is a classic case of how we live rent free in so many 'Journalists' heads.

No criticism of Sharkes being played into offering a 4 year deal

Instead a BS story about us submitting and then resubmitting a 4 year deal which never was.

Good luck convincing those who believe journos are privy to the details of all our negotiations even when they deliver different information.

Okay

Who is up next

We have almost 1 million dollars of Packers money to spend. For any normal club, the world would be our oyster. Not to worry, I’m sure we’ll pick up a discard or two over the off season. It’s the only time of the year we sign anyone these days.

Discards..

Like Blake Austin, Kevin Naiqama, Martin Taupau types ?

Isn't always a bad thing....

I can see discards being guys like Zac Lomax, Hudson Young, Joe Tapine, David Klemmer.

Glass isn't always half empty.

You can always find a bargain in a discount bin, but I’d rather brand shop.

That off contract list is looking budget as it gets.

We should be looking at players who are under contract and unhappy (Tapine, Klemmer)

Or players stuck behind current starters.
Or guys wanting fresh starts (Lomax, Cotric)

These brand shop players you speak of exist but they're the ones in special circumstances mentioned.

Has any club ever sought salary cap relief on the basis of a reduction to save the embarrassment of not being able to spend it all because no one wants to come"

Wouldn’t you just start extensions of some of the key players that are off contract 22 or 23 and front load that into this year?

It just defers the embarrassment until next year unless we change coaches.

Finucane is a dud signing. I'd love him here at 500k for 2 years. The money he was offered from us was overs but it sounds like we are operating smartly now. You can pay overs for a year but no more than that.

I think one thing people are forgetting re a player like Finucane is it would be VERY easy to find a home for him in the UK should he be burnt out by years 3 or 4 of that deal. 9 grand finals...multiple Origins...Kangaroos...incredible pro...he won't let his standards slip and would have every club in the UK willing to sign him at 33. I don't really see much risk at all for Cronulla.

We gave one of the worst contracts ever to Packer as his criminal record / his family situation (young child with autism) meant he was never going to go to the UK and would ride out any contract. And ridden it out he has...700 or whatever for half a pre season game this year.

It’s moneyball guys, not signing Finucane gives us more options. He’s been phenomenal but let’s all remember, Matt Ballin played like 250 games back to back, and the moment we signed him, his body gave away. This seems like one worth passing on for the length of contract he was after. I think we should all be happy about the approach the Tigers are taking to tell the market we are here to compete, not to be used.

I understand what your trying to say but we signed Ballin after his ACL injury.

Time will tell but I think Cronulla has their next Luke Lewis and we have a fat bloke and a soft so and so in the 2nd row.

We can’t pay anyone overs while our cap is 30% lower than most other clubs.

Has anyone ever pointed out Finucane looks like Shrek when he is morphed into a human in Shrek 2? Just FYI

I reckon he looks like the shark man in the new suicide squad.

I'm guessing it is in reference to the over paying of certain players.

When you look at it that way you understand why we’re not winning more games, but that’s effectively the result when performance doesn’t match the remuneration or having long periods in rehab. eg Packer, Reynolds (yeh I know he’s gone), BJ, Mbye.

We had Reynolds money this year and got diddly squat, something has to give, we can't be that bad at sealing a deal
