Gagai covers wing and centre at a high level. Less concerned about age with him he’s a natural athlete. 2 years max and nowhere near the money he’s on. 400- 450k p.a.price range.
He’s worth it for 2 years.

I doubt he would leave souffs for that amount

He’s off contract, 31 next year and a centre.

I am sure some club will offer him more than that i just hope it is not us

To be honest he has been fairly quiet at club level for a few years, his contract is up and he starts playing half decent footy. How many times have we seen that, then watch as the player gets into a comfort zone and doesn't put in the extras again.
Also we as a club have an incredibly poor record with buying aging players, e.g.Packer, Reynolds, Ballin, Idris, Reddy, etc, just to name a few. I believe we should faith in the junior development of the club along with junior recruitment programs they have running and see what they can do with Hoffman, Cini and Cooper, they all have that look about them of having a bright futures in front of them. Beside I would hate to see another name added to the list of junior players the Tigers let slip through their fingers, only to have them come back an haunt us.

Sorry fairly quiet at club level ???

In 2020 he scored 11 tries the most of his career, following his 2nd best year in 2019, he made 18 Line breaks, 66 tackle breaks, his effective tackle % at 83% was 5% + higher then it had been in any year in his career and made less errors then he had in his career and gave away less penalties then any year since his 1st full yr. His last 2 years and esepecially last year have been career years for him in the NRL. Now I'm not saying he will repeat that but he is an Origin centre at the top of his game. He will be 31 but he is an absolute professional and a guy who signed with Souths to come and play under Madge because he wanted the professionalism and hardness Madge was known for.

We have a bunch of young backs - in fact young inexperienced backs is almost all we have and he would bring experience, class and form

I would like to share your optimism about Gugai, however, we already have three players of a similar type BJ, Roberts and Mbye.

If we want to buy an expensive centre, we shall look at Manu, Crichton, Olam, and at worst Morris Bross.

we’ve got a couple of top notch centres coming through in Flegg who will be knocking on the door of FG in the next 12-24 months

If we sign Gagai there's no reason to think the path to first grade will be blocked for our own kids, because by the start of 2023 we'll be paying half Gagai's wages to play in England. Of course that freight will also mean we don't have the money to prevent any really talented juniors we have from signing for Melbourne, but who cares because by that stage we'll all be really excited about signing Curtis Scott or Blake Ferguson or Alex Johnston or whoever and they will *definitely* solve all our problems this time...

I’m unsure why everyone seems to think when a player hits 30 they’re no good. If they still have the desire and are injury free there is nothing stopping them.

I watched a 33 year old Anthony Don run down Dylan Edwards last night. Look at Josh Morris.

do we really need a 31 year old Dane Gagai? yes he's not as hit and miss as Joey, but I'd rather us buy Gildart and let Kepaoa, Hoffman, Ogden, Kei and Talau fight it out for the other centre spot.

None of those guys would make first grade at any other club…they need time to develop.

He’s worth it for 2 years.

And fullback if needed

I was thinking about this myself.

I think it boils down to this. In general, a player will reach that point when they are not as effective 1 or 2 seasons before they retire and they are holding a spot from an up and comer. I guess buying a player in their 30’s increases the risk that you’ll be stuck with them in that period when they are declining.

Gagai seems like he’s still got something to offer though, but I’d be more comfortable with a 2 year deal.

Agree. I don't want him on a 3-4 year contract, but 2 years on decent money is fine. We balance the squad with experience on short-ish contracts, that way if we get a standout young player, their path is not blocked.

Tamou is the only older player we've signed, and while he has been disappointing, I don't believe this will happen with everyone.

If we signed Finucane and Gagai, we start to look closer to a top 8 side.

**Why would we want an origin player?**

This forum makes me laugh.

To be fair, we haven't had the best run with SOO players coming to wests. ( I don't count Harry)

Bwaith, JR, Mbye...Have I forgot anyone?

Mcqueen, Joffa.

Outside of Mbye, they're all former origin players though. Gagai has been an automatic pick for Queensland for years.

For the money we payed for Joe Off I think he has been great value.. Works his butt off ever game.

Good Post

I feel that his Desire would be diminished here at a rebuilding club.

His motivation is Superannuation

Gagai's issue is that his form at club level has never reflected his ability at Rep level.
He's form for QLD in years gone has been nothing short of world class, then he returns to club and goes missing for months at a time. Therefore you need to pay him an Origin level salary, and only get an Origin level performance every second week (at best).
This does not bode well for a Tigers team riddled with mercurial talents. I think he is a talented player and by no means past his prime, but we need guys that will help foster a culture of 'no easy games' and Gagai ain't one of those guys.
