Correct me if I'm wrong but when we previously had a rep system it was taken down for a similar reason, because a particular user (Alien) couldn't help themselves from abusing it….

That was correct. 99% of people are using the system as it was intended, as 99% of people on here are mature enough to understand and appreciate the rep system purpose. It seems there's always one person who tries to spoil things for others.

Everyone has to remember too, these forums were designed to be "Family Friendly." I like the stance we are making now knowing that one day soon, my kids will be using these forums too. Being a parent, I like the fact that moving forward, my kids can come on here and not be exposed to anything vulgar or inappropriate. There's enough of that out in the world today. I think, that if we can limit that exposure one step at a time, our kids might have a decent world for themselves.

Good post Chris , 100% correct and very well put .

I use the word crap quite often on here , is it classed as swearing ??

And the next I question I have is my warning I received about being homophobic

I have made many jokes ( and they are jokes and I understand the stigma as much as anyone , one of my best mates is gay and I went with him when he approached his parents when he came out ) that why after so many comments was I warned over this particular comment

If it was an issue is should of been dealt with then , the fact that have now been classed a homophobe …........... well that just doesn't sit real well I'm sorry

Cleaning up the swearing is a no brainer, personally i have no issue as long as it isnt directed at someone but the whole point of a forum is to discuss your opinion or the opinion of others. Short sharp outbursts of emotion and a lack of class are like Willow said better left for other forums.

That said there is a big picture here left unsaid. This is and should always be an adult forum. We have a 10 yo who likes to read the forum, he is a mature kid and we have no issue or problem with a bit of swearing. Agendas and aggression on the other hand are something of a concern. Some topics take a maturity to fully understand.

Take the recent Harry thread. It has turned into an ugly war of words and unfortunately it was always going to.

In that thread there has been a consistent effort by some to get under the skin of the old Balmain faction, you only have to read the first page to see the usual Wests aligned members posting opinion that on their own may not be too harsh but as a collective do nothing but flame one side of the joint venture. The Balmain boys hit back and some are upset enough to go over the top and receive warnings etc.

Same things happens the other way around if there is story that presents itself in a way that it favours Wests or suggests Wests will take control of the joint venture. The Balmain boys go in hard an early then the Wests crew hit back and before you know it the forum has turned into a war of words and a moderators nightmare again.

Perhaps the moderators could go in a bit harder and a bit earlier in these threads.Perhaps this older generation should show a little more maturity and think about how their strong and one sided opinions upset the other side of the joint venture?

The days of pandering to the rusted on generation are long over. I dont see any need for Wests or Balmain posts in the Wests Tigers section of the forum. the agitators in these threads are easily identified. Do we really need to give them a soap box to voice their ancient agendas.

Take these situations out of the forum and its a pretty easy going place where most people respect the opinions of others. However that doesnt make it safe for kids to start reading unsupervised and it doesnt make it safe for them to start posting and engaging with adults before they are mature enough to understand the ins and outs of a keyboard warrior. These moderators are not our baby sitters!

Jmo, but I think the best way to operate the rep system is for users to have to spread rep around before doing the same user twice. It's just open to abuse otherwise. And the abuse goes both ways. Either the insecure Alien version where you sit there for 20 mins negging every post you can find of that poster, or you get the opposite where guys are buddies, and they just rep each other over and over.

Well yes GNR we can see who this is aimed at , can't we ??

Just because we rep each other doesn't mean we are trying to got get our rep up

If I think what one of the others has said is funny or taken the urine (better not use the wrong terminology) out of myself or someone else in pure banter I will pos rep it

And seeing that my above comments regarding the homophobe issue or even whether a word is a swear word were touched with a ten foot pole by anyone I won't be commenting on Wests Tigers issues anymore bar the Fantasy League unless it is sorted

And as soon as the current Football (soccer) season is finished and the comps associated are finished that will be me done

The big issues

Yep. My missus worries about that sort of crap with Facebook and it's got me stuffed as to why.

Yeah probably not a big issue but labelling people or their mates isn't on FG

And I'd do the same on or off the Forum

People do the wrong things by your mates you stick by them , no matter what

The bit that gets me is us having a go at each other
After all we support the same club regardless of the history

Anywho i dont have an issue with the policing of swearing
In any case we did have the "Report this post" option if it was offensive or over the top

There was nothing directed at you in any way Happy, as it was more about people worrying about other people liking whatever they may post or how many brownie points they may have. Definitely not an issue for me.

I, like most probably the vast majority on here couldn't care less if people want to boost each other's ego by giving a thumbs up (not that I think that occurs anyway), as it is a forum, not a popularity contest. Having said that, if someone is going to give a thumbs down in other than what they believe will be seen as a tongue in cheek manner, well I can understand that that may offend someone that may be a little insecure.

And on topic, I find myself having to watch what I type, particularly in and in light of this thread as I have grown up with disguised swearing, with elders using innocuous words such as rats and hoot etc when they were really meaning that sex related word

Apologies to all, pretty sure I've been guilty of the disguised swearing, and hadn't considered it might be offensive on here…

Yeah Im the same FG….I dont even look at my noticificatons unless its a PM....couldnt care less if I get brownie points or not but funny thing is though I do use the thumbs up....especially if someone posts something or says my thoughts pretty closely, theres nothing much more to add from me so I just give a green thumb, without really even thinking about it....dunno why youd worry if you were neg repped, if they were $$$$'s you were losing yeh could understand

Yep, i don't care who has how many rep points but i automatically give them out if i like the post.
