Do you enjoy Rugby League?

I enjoy watching rugby league. Have since I was about 6 yrs old.
Really like when you can see a lot of games on a saturday.

just simply despise when wests-tigers lose.
still annoys the crap out of me after all this time.
on the outside I appear to cope, but internally…...., let's not go there..

There are a lot of things i could complain about but this one is the thing turning me off the most. Its not just a Tigers thing its in most games.

Timeline wise the lack of interest dates back to the formation of the new independent commission and the removal of David Gallop. It's no longer a level playing field.

Ha. David gallop.

Yep people used to bag Gallop , look how the A league is coming on in leaps and bounds .
Dave Smith and his cronies haven't got a friggin clue !!!

so get back gallop who did nothing for the NRL, meanwhile this new commission has literally doubled revenue in a few years, set aside hundreds of millions in a future fund, secured a billion dollars for rectangle stadia in sydney and is effectively negotiating a $2 billion TV deal for 2018

and gallop has done what for the a league??? they were 'coming in leaps and bounds' well before he got there, he's just continuing that trend. good on him for not screwing it up

The Commission has done all these things. Correct.

Whilst they were doing all that - the game has gone to "pot".

No point in having heaps of dough, rectangular stadia etc. If you have a crap product!!!!

the games the same as it's always been. referees are getting better all the time. the game itself is far more entertaining now than 20 years ago.

but referees have always been crap. anyone who watched the 78 finals might agree.

not to mention the excessive video replays and whatnot that we have these days.

now, they obviously have work to do regarding refs. easiest solution imo no video ref, each team gets 2 wrong video ref challenges per game which they can use on essentially anything except things like offside and holding the bloke too long.

and they're working on removing the wrestle, which again imo, is less prevalent today than the melbourne storm years

I've cut back a lot in recent years. Living in Canberra, I used to go watch the Raiders 5 or 6 times a year though I'm not a Raiders supporter. Most weeks I'd catch at least a couple games on the TV,. These days I just seem to watch the occasional game that doesn't include the WT's.

Refereeing, and my frustration with it, is a large part of my reduced appreciation of the game. I'm really sick of the impact the refs are having on the outcome of the game and their lack of consistency. However, for me its Channel 9 and their bias toward certain clubs and or players that I hate the most. Loose carry or not, the ball traveled forward when Smith knocked the ball out of Richards hand, 100% knock on, but Gus wants to buy the video ref an ice cream. I hear excuses for players such as Slater or Smith while others get slammed. Remeber SOO when they trumped out SBW at half time or the over the top exposure they gave to the Burgess boys mum. I'll be happy if nine lose the rights when they come up for renewal.

I resent the influence of gambling.

It seems everyone's into it, including commentators and other respected senior figures in the game.

They get air time during the game ffs.

While that's such a big part I don't trust the game's being run on the straight and narrow.

Between the accepted TPA advantages for certain teams, the poor quality refs, the overall inconsistencies, I can't help but think it's inevitable that gambling related corruption or something like that will come out at some stage in the future.

The professionalism is seriously lacking and I think that serves certain purposes.

As for the game itself, I sincerely hope the reduced interchange happens, so we can see some flair back in the game.

More than just acrobatic winger touch downs.

Soccer crowds are going backwards . Only gallop and his news limited mates think it's going forward. 30k for a grand final. How impressive. Add to that salary cap rorting, terrible crowd behavior and clubs going broke.

You do realise that they "only" got 30K because they were forced to play at AAMI Park rather than Etihad?

Yep. That's my point. Any decent CEO would have sorted it out. But Gallop couldn't. He's a joke of an administrator, but he's a bit of hero the way he saved the trophy and watched Lowey fall.

It was a stuff up no doubt, but it won't happen again. The week before they got over 50K in Melbourne for a semi-final. If the grand final was played at Etihad it would have been a sell-out. The A-League has some issues, but attracting crowds is not one of them. Anyway, I believe Gallop is doing a decent job at the FFA, the league is still in its infancy.

Do you think Smith is doing a good job at the NRL?

yes. He doubled our income basically over night and the game as a whole is miles ahead of where Gallop had us.

5-10 years ago I would watch anywhere from 5-8 games a week.

It's getting to a point now where I don't care if I miss watching the Tigers games. Refereeing and 5-hitup and kick to the winger is ruining the game. The ball needs to go through the hands more.

That's one measurement, but the game itself as a spectacle is suffering, and lots of other issues.

I still enjoy the game, however they need to pull the trigger on either letting technology make the decisions, or not.

Horrendous refereeing decisions in almost every game I have watched this year change results and affect player livelihood.

Games like the Broncos/Cowboys game from last week remind me of what I love about the game - I just wish it wasn't so hinged on poor decisions.

Did anyone watch the NRL HQ video this week with Vossy talking about the contentious calls from the weekend? The Knights scrum feed was one that was mentioned. Hardly surprising that Tony Archer came out and said that all the refs calls made were correct.

If that is the case, the NRL need to educate all us fans who are saying they get so many calls wrong. They keep playing with the interpretation of the rules, until we have no idea what is right or wrong. Fix that, and you'll go a long way to improving the enjoyment of the viewers.

i think we get rid of the video ref getting involved so much and we eliminate a heap of problems. I also think our (tigers) games are very boring atm but generally most games are good.
But my initial post was in response to someone saying we'd be better off with Gallop back. I found that ridiculous.

Get rid of video ref, one ref on the pitch and do not allow replays at the ground.

At least if the ref is bad, logic would dictate he would be consistent in his poor decisions without the outside interference.

Agreed. Plus i think most fans can cop a split second call being wrong but feel ripped when the video ref sees 5 or 6 replays and gets it wrong.

two words.

Bunker.

System.

With games never really overlapping (except Friday nights) Anymore - it would be perfect.

Bill Harrigan and Steven Clarke. Throw a mountain of cash at them, and make them bunker refs for the next 5 years.

Harrigan may have been arrogant/overconfident - however he was consistent. Ditto Steven Clarke

The minute we get rid of video refs i guarantee games that are on the line and have last second plays where a team scores from a clear foul/indecretion/knock-on that would have been picked up by technology will send people bananas.

As i said in an earlier post, the problem isn't with the technology, it's the people using it i have a problem with.

The Video ref is essential for the modern game to have any credibility. The slow motion replay is getting televised from multiple angles, whether the refs choose to use it or not. When a ref gets it wrong, it's on the big screen at the ground, it's on a million TV sets, it's blindingly obvious to everyone except, apparently, the bloke with the whistle.

IMO, there are bad influences everywhere. Yeh, gambling has the potential to ruin lives and families but so does alcohol which is one of the biggest sponsors in every code.

Everything done in moderation cannot do much damage. If you put a couple of tenners a week, that's ok but if you're gambling with 50% of your income then you have a problem and it's not the code or the gambling agencies' fault.

Every sport is a business now and if you indulge yourself too much into the ethics then you will fall behind.

Agree re the professionalism though. Ch9i is a bunch of amateurs for sure.
