Elijah Taylor

Terrible news for Elijah and I hope criminal action is taken against his former manager. It's disgusting that he can wrought 350k out of the bloke yet still find a way to declare bankruptcy. Should be an automatic jail term in cases like this where the victim is left with nothing to show.

This may be really unfair to the NRL but historically most would agree they are reactionary as opposed to proactive. They MUST get ahead of the game and stop these grubs manipulating clubs and players.

**Elijah Taylor shattered by alleged manager scam that cost him more than $350,000**

Former Kiwi Test forward Elijah Taylor has been left devastated after being allegedly scammed of more than $350,000 by his former manager.

Taylor, who played with Wests Tigers last season before being released, took his ex-manager Ian Miles to a civil court in Christchurch and won the case.

He was awarded $484,824 in damages and costs.

But he is unlikely to see a penny of it as Miles, who managed his financial affairs for more than four years, has declared himself bankrupt.

"Elijah is shattered as Ian was a close friend and someone he trusted with his money," a source close to Taylor said.

"He doesn't know what to do next and is considering police action.

"It is a cautionary tale to all young players - keep an eye on your money and make sure whoever is looking after it is doing the right thing by you."

Taylor is currently without a club for next season but has been training with Blacktown Workers - Manly's feeder club. He is expected to sign to go to England to continue his career in 2021

I’ve always rated the bloke, would be good if we gave him a contract to help him.

Gutted for ET 350k is a huge amount for guy like him. Another example of a player agent being shady as. They are all parasites living off the players hard work and talent because they dont have any themselves. I hope he takes criminal action and makes a stand like Mannah did.

Friends/Family and business never works

I've seen the effects of a family member in my Mrs family who sold a business to another family member
who had their own parents go guarantor on the loan for the business

Its a horrific mess , the parents of the purchaser will lose everything once the banks remove the covid protection .....the purchaser went bankrupt ..and the seller hasn't spoken to many of the family for probably 2 years ...and every Xmas I wished my family could be as happy as my Mrs family ....

Don't do it

Oh man, this news breaks my heart. There’s plenty of scumbag players in the game whom if this happened to, I wouldn’t give a rats’. But for this to happen to Elijah, one of the nicest blokes going around, makes one lose faith in the world. Here’s hoping he can get some of it back.

How did Elijah’s money get into the hands of his manager?
What happened to the $350k?
Did the agent act within the scope of his license?

Judging from the fact that Elijah just won the case court case, its pretty clear some wrongdoing was involved

I really hope this rubbish makes the NRL really come down hard on the pond scum that call themselves managers, I am sure, well I hope, that there are a majority that do act in an ethical manner and try to do the best for their players.
There needs to be strict guide lines regarding the conduct of the managers and safeguards put in place to protect players, that said players need to start respecting contracts also because currently contracts seem to mean nothing and that just encourages even more unethical behaviour from the managers chasing the mighty dollars.
I really hope ET can recoup his losses, he seems like a lovely family man who doesn’t deserve to be robbed by an unscrupulous manager.

Krissy , there are strict guidelines regarding conduct and scope of obligations concerning behaviour. The NRL issue the licenses and therefore should have the power to set out clear obligations and code of conduct. I agree with your point, the lack of transparency is a real issue, both with the agents and the nrl themselves. Transparency introduces more accountability which in turn exposes ineptitude. When the vast majority owe their livelihood to nepotism, greater transparency is a long hard battle. Nobody deserves to be robbed of their employment remuneration, least of all the hard working players who give all of themselves for a comparatively small reward.

It sure does appear that way. What the nrl should be focussed on is the circumstances which lead to the court case.

So if the NRL accredits these agents, should they force them to pay a bond to cover these events?

Very smart idea, the NRL would never think of it though.

Bankruptcy is hard, outright conning should be prosecuted in court more. Often it isn't because the victims are broke. Another reason that hit me was dad's boss was screwed over by a certain Telco. He could not sue as his mental state was fairly fragile, the telco was going to go all out.

Remember Commonwealth bank, Where are the judgements and the jail sentence? Were talking many more millions then Elijah's $350K here. People should have lost houses and joined Longbay... did not happen (yell this at a pollie next time you see them).

Actual Criminal prosecution though is hard. I don't know the case but you would have to prove that Elijah's manager acted with intent to defraud Elijah. . Though the judgement against him will add to that, what good is it to Elijah if that bum is in jail? he can't earn money in jail so hence he can't pay Elijah back in there.

My heart goes to Elijah, he was a hard working player and gave his all. We could tell at the end of his career he was effected he still tried. I hope the club can find a spot for him if he can't find work.

I also hope the NRL cracks down on these player managers. Investments can go south but Craig Wing, Willie Mason and Elijah shouldn't be earning the big bucks and be left with nothing. The money should have been diversified or put into property.

Sorry to hear about what happened to your father. My ex was paralysed after a car swiped her bike she is in a chair paralysed from chest down and the insurance company stalled 6 years with her claim hoping she would commit suicide so they wouldn't have to pay her out.

It's just another example of the administrative mess that Greenberg has left the NRL in.

He played devils advocate for player managers especially his mate Moses, constantly turned a blind eye, allowed corruption, lies and deceit to run riot, and then washed his hands whilst walking away into the sunset with a $750K payout.

ET's situation is complicated by personal friendship, however if there were checks and balances, and all player managers were forced to show their books, finances and clearly devolve TPA's this wouldn't have happened.

In my opinion Abdo isn't any better - accountants don't make great CEOs. They just look at the bottom line rather than the big picture.

I feel for ET, he's a smart bloke and WTs should bring him in as an NZ scout to help Madge and Hartigan find talent across the pond.

I have said this before but i cannot understand why one player in the NRL has a manager. If you were the best player in the NRL you could get 16 offers (you won't). Choose the best and get your lawyer to check it... $300-400/ hr. $2000 max, financial advice? get an expert...really managers are just a Richard measuring exercise. They are not needed.

My nephew plays for Souths and he signed his latest contract a few years ago. His manager, however, has him busy in the offseason networking, speaking, studying and preparing for life after footy. He has probably taught him more than he ever leaned in school and he’s given him an opportunity for a successful working life, which he’ll most likely be doing for the next 30 years. He’s gold. He also manages the Big Marn who once told me he’s probably doubled his income and saved his career. There’s some good ones.

If your solicitor steals from you or costs you money through his or her incompetence you have insurance to cover your losses-called LawCover and it's an essential element of your lawyer's practising certificate. Probably too left field a concept for the morons at the NRL to grasp

Maybe I'm reading too far into this ...but get the feeling the bloke representing him was a mate and not a legal beagle
