High-scoring wins didn't help us: Taylor

Wests Tigers 1427m Parramatta 1431m Lack of go forward…don't think so...

Errors 19...ooops

Why do people keep saying that Taylor knockers from last year think defence is not important?

I haven't seen 1 person suggest this. Not one post or even intimation has been of this thought…not a single one that I have seen.

But many suggest that attack is far more important than defence

It's not , never has been and never will be

2005 was proof of that in the end , we kept our opposition in the final series to around an average of 11 points a game

But few look at that , they just remember all the massive scorelines , length of the field tries , all the "licence to thrill " stuff and think that's that

Of course there is some context.

However last year we 100% looked like the 15th best side the comp. Bearing in the mind the 16th best team beat us twice.

And yet, his record was better than Tim Sheens first year record.

Context is more than final finishing positions & for & against.

This is a team cobbled together on a shoestring, forced to play young guys who may or may not be ready for 1st grade, and with an injection of guys released from other clubs.

Unlike the final teams that played under Sheens & Potter, this team looks committed. The defence is improving. Young forwards are starting to learn to run from deep with purpose.

What is 'progress'? Results only? Or improved standard on the field?

This team is playing better. They are not perfect, they are better.

That's progress.

It's like everyone is watching Leicester leading the Premier League & thinking "if they can do it, all minnows around the world should be winning". Doesn't happen that way.

Making the 8 would be a high achievement for this team.

Finishing last would be disappointing, but not unexpected.

There is a reason a lot of 'experts' picked this team to come last- they are starting from the bottom. It takes time. Improvement in the play is what is required. We are getting that.

Seriously, we are talking about a team that held one of the premiership heavyweights this season to 8 points. And whinging.

Tim Sheens like it or not had 3 Premierships under his belt.

People trusted him to rebuild the side.

With Taylor its a bit of a guessing game, some ,love him some are not so sure.

You missed eddies, 'not caring if we win 40-38?'

Youre not looking hard enough chum

Your missing my point.

WInning is more important then anything.

I would rather win 40-38 then lose 8-0.

Doesn't mean i don't want them to defend well.

Im saying I would rather win, then lose.

Throwing words like "chum" in smacks of smugness.

I don't think you get it Eddie

I don't love Taylor at all , I just think he deserves a decent chance to see if what he has planned for us works during his contract

And I thought the exact same thing with Potter , he deserved a season with his own players and own ideas

If he fails to light it up we get rid of him then

But in both cases they both deserve our 100 % support , someone saw something in their ideas and plans for the club

I think he deserves a decent chance as well.

I don't want him to fail.

The thing that annoyed me was he put a put of rubbish on old Tigers teams and coaches.

Coaches and players that achieved a premiership and a couple of Top 4 finishes. We went 10 years under Sheens without a bottom 4 finish yet Taylor says we have been at the bottom for years.

I thought it looked a bit childish. Ringing up a radio station to rant not a single other NRL coach would do this.

I just wish he would stop harking back to the past and feeling the need to justify himself all the time. Like his supporters. Just win don't worry about bagging others out to justify yourself.

Anyway, Ive never called for him to be sacked. He deserves this chance and I sad at the start of the year if they can win 10 games he should prob get a 3rd season

Putting rubbish on he old Tigers

I'm guess you mean how he and other clubs would focus on how to beat the Wests Tigers and how we had a soft underbelly Probably a great wake up call for some WT's fans

But it was honesty , what's wrong with honesty Eddie The truth hurting is the best thing this club needs

Yeah ringing the radio station , wasn't a great look was it

I think people need to see where some things are at now compared to where it was across all areas of the club

Things are improving , but many are impatient and want change yesterday

Usually when you do things properly , they take time , shortcuts might seem good , but they usually gloss over problems and issues

I have given Taylor big wraps for the professional approach he bought to strength and conditioning.

And his defence first premise I agreed with and still do.

I just thought he went way over board trying to copy cat the Roosters with a roster that needed to find their own best football.

The whole body language was terrible last year on the field, players did not believe in the game plan.

This year there appears a better balance if anything the players need to learn how to reign it in a bit as completions have been terrible the past 2 games.

However we do look dangerous.,

I don't mind him but i don't like the constant need to justify himself.

It might be the truth in some respects but some of it is not and appears a bit childish.

Eddie does not think that defence is unimportant. If you look at what he has said, you can have the best defence in the comp but must also score more points to win. We have a bad habit of only concentrating on one aspect of the game per week.

Corey Parker said the Broncs try to limit sides to <16 points as they feel they have more than that in their attack each game. Im sure they could keep that even lower if they just concentrated on D but they also need to attack…Thats finding the balance that works. We haven't done this yet.

I don't even see any JT knockers. That would imply that we are somehow out to get him. That is definitely not the case. All I see is stupid stuff being said and some people calling it out.

On the other hand there are some posters who think JT is perfect, any problems are always someone else's problem and if we come 15th for the next 5 season JT should be resigned for life.

Things have improved from last year but the rest of this statement is simply not true.

This is what I will term BS corporate spin. It's meaningless.

It's pretty simple actually. You need to score more points than you let in. People appear to be arguing against this and they need to go and work out what scoring more points means - it's a win. When you score less points it's a loss.

I know that this is groundbreaking news and it's going to be a surprise to some people but it's the truth and you can actually go and check it out over the course of rugby league history or in fact most sporting contests throughout history. Statistically you win basically 100% of games when you score more points than the opposition. It's amazing.

I'll be surprised if we don't have a new coach by 2018 … Win, lose or draw.

This is a different topic. JT has been pretty bad. He needs to turn things around completely. He has improved a lot in front of the media and I think the team looks better. He still needs to do a lot more work on both fronts though to have any chance of staying at the club.

Like I have said earlier I am sure whoever makes these decisions will be expecting massive improvement for JT to retain his job and thank God for that. If some of the peeps on this forum had their way JT would be anointed the lifelong super coach of the Tigers.

Ah the Sheens years ..what memories…I think my favourites were 2007 when all we had to do was beat the Knights to make the 8...who at the time were running dead last by a long way...alas we didn't...they avoided the spoon and we came a heroic 9th because that is so much better than bottom 4...then flash forward to 2012 as premiership favourites sitting in the 8 with 4 rounds to play and didn't win another game but we had a credible 10th...Ushering in 2013 with backloaded contracts and the beginning of letting contracted players go to other Clubs whilst still paying them..but it wasn't bottom 4...glory days..

It appears now we have recovered somewhat Roster wise with a young very talented group somewhat inexperienced with most pundits still rating it a bottom 4 side but on the rise and the Cap issues being sorted somewhat...the Top 8 is quite achievable...Taylor needs results as does this playing group...

Idk about anyone else, but I for one am tired of our reputation of just being an attacking team. It got us a premiership over a decade ago, but what's it done since? Overall, our style has failed as we've lost more than we've won. We need to be more conventional and balanced to be successful, and I'm glad we have a coach who has recognised this.

Well to be honest I haven't seen a change in this team at all, season has gone alone like the last 3 or 4\. Encouraging wins at the start of season, losing a game they should win.
Look to be honest the next month of footy will be crucial. I would love to see a change but how long is it going to take???? And probably not with the roster that we have.
