Hit on Groat

Don't see how it was Groat's fault. He ran about 2 metres before Teo launched himself. Intent isn't the issue (you'd hope) but the bottom line is Teo made direct contact with Groat's head with his shoulder. He wasn't wrong-footed, it didn't slip up, he hit him flush on the jaw. Personally it was a send off for mine. If that was his wrist it would have been a send off, why should the shoulder be different?

Sorry let me rephrase. I don't see how Groat "contributed" to the tackle…

Ever wonder why Martin Lang copped so many head highs?

The way a player runs, his style or movement towards the defender can contribute.

Judiciary takes this into account all the time.

Nobody is saying Groat is 50% responsible though, but its a factor.

Martin Lang got tackles at head level at the defence line. Groat had barely got the ball or had time to react to anything - Teo just blindsided him. I really don't see the parallel myself.

If the judiciary consider it a mitigating factor, they're fools (IMO).

I didn't see Teo blindside anyone.

League must come down on unnecessary and illegal contact with the head, whether deliberate or incompetent for the benefit of the players, and not just in the initial tackle but the entire tackle (no more grapples or face jobs etc)

So, we've had this, Moltzen copped an elbow last week, and we had 2 swinging arms in the Dragons game against Beau and Benji and so far nothing much has been done except 2 penalties and players on report….. so much for the NRL being concerned about players safety........

I'm pretty steamed about this, sure we haven't set the world on fire, but blatant crap like this sure doesn't help our cause. We've certainly had the pointy end of the stick in regards to injuries and season/career or near career endings on top of that, we don't need our guys to be concussed due to illegal play and not have anything happen to the perpetrator.

Not that Groat has been in good form, but that just caused more workload for the remaining guys, meanwhile the Bronco's got to play at full strength, it's bull….

for Matt Groat's safety, long term well being, do the players involved in this have CAT scans done after this sort of impact.

don't forget a CAT scan saved Adam Ritson's life.

Deserved a penalty and on report, but Groat contributed with his Martin Lang style run.

Never worth a send off or sinbin.

Agreed… RL is a contact sport played at a high intensity.

In saying that, it was a horrible hit and I hope Matt Groat recovers quickly.

Judging by the history this year, he will have to get 2 weeks?

It is a contact sport , but the shoulder charge is banned in junior rugby league so how does a player learn how to use it properly when he makes it to the senior ranks.
They look spectacular when they come off done right , but too many go wrong .Two weeks off ,but its not to our advantage whatever Teo gets

ELLIS is gone,,,sign TEO!!! We need that!!! Happy Clappers wont be happy…

Teo gutless dog has always gave it to us since we got rid of him why didn't someone clock him hate him nearly as much as hodges

the only player who tried a bit of payback was robbie farah, the smallest guy in our pack, speaks volumes for our pack …..

The shoulder charge requires no technique, other than a basic sense of timing. The NRL wont ban it however, because its integral to their season launch video and it gives the fans a viagra free stiffy

Gould touched on a good point last night, how do you grade this…

The three gradings are careless, reckless and intentional.

It's not intentional, from looking at the replays but I definitely lean to the reckless for this sort of tackle rather than careless.

The excuse by Griffen that it's ok because he was trying to fire the team up doesn't wash. He could have tackled normally but high risk comes with high reward but also high loss also! He tried the high risk play and it didn't come off..

To me the rule should be this

"If you want to risk shoulder charging, then be prepared to pay the consequences".

If a player wants to be a hero and run out and try and do the big hit, then if it works good on them, but if theres any contact with the head, then expect 5 weeks minimum. Noone means to do a deliberate high tackle, but if you run out trying to put a hit on, then its definetly as careless as any tackle in the game.

Agreed MM, that's exactly my point. I think it's more than careless.

Careless is a tackle that slips up or player is falling etc

The shoulder charge is an deliberate act of smashing someone. If you get it wrong, bad luck you are gone! If you don't want to risk 5 weeks on sideline, tackle normally!!

More than half the initial contact though in tackles is chest high, theres a very fine line for error, even a genuine tackle can and does go wrong, often
Big hits do inspire teams…..why do we see players get off on it, come and and backslap everyone when they happen?
Cant turn it into net ball though

JWH fell into Dwyers tackle. Groat was running standing tall.

Copped it square on the chin. Extremely dangerous hit.

Ah I think JWH was running too mate….actually he dropped his hip...not much difference if any at all....excepth the jesrseys worn of course

I just believe that JWH crouched down into a crouching Dwyer. Where as Teo jumped up to hit Groat. This is the distinct difference I can see. I just cant see how they can be called 'the same tackle'.

In the end however - Dwyer got JWH on the chin and should have been penalised - but it was no where near as bad as Teo's.

I was going to say Groat is way shorter than Teo…..I find this hard to believe but apparently groat is 6'3" and teo is 6'2"
Groats apparently only an inch shorter than Woods at 6'4"!!!!!!!

I heard Gould say that Groat isn't tall, which made me think Gould hasn't met him up close because Groat is not short, 6'3" doesn't surprise me. Teo decided to put on a big hit, good luck to him, if it comes off great for him, if it ends up breaking the rules then he cops the consequences.

You can't ban the shoulder charge, just slap heavy penalties on those who cannot execute them correctly. If you want to use it as a means of intimidation, go ahead… But if you stuff up and severely injure someone, you deserve 4 weeks on the sidelines.

Can't go banning everything, otherwise it will end up being touch footy. I still reckon clean tackles around the ankles deserve to be rewarded to deter this sort of thing.

As I read on someone else's post earlier, props to Sammy Thaiday for paying more attention to Groat than the game. Interesting to note that pig Te'o was only interested in collecting the pill.
