HSC advice

What is the advice you guys can give me when it comes to the HSC. I have the exams starting Monday fortnight so i am looking for any advice i can get.

Relax about what you know. Don't cram unnecessarily and get plenty of sleep. Also remember to stay hydrated.

If theres lots of things you need to memorise, take notes. The act of writing it down will help remember it later because you can visualise it. Another memory trick is to boil things down to short phrases that you then use to jog your memory.

Past papers.
Past papers.
Past papers.

You'll find the questions are basically the same each year, just worded differently. If you can successfully navigate a few past papers then you won't be surprised come exam
Day

Use acronyms to memorise important points of a topic so that way when you are in the exam you write down the acronym next to a question prior to answering each question (e.g the acronym could be the word PASS with P standing for Profit, A for Assets etc). Of course only works for essay or short answer questions, I used it for HSC and Uni exams.

Think about the finals if we make the 8.
Will help you relax.. This coming from a bloke who gets super tense at exams and interviews lol

Try to revise everything you can in your studies and hopefully recall is spot on come exam day(s)

I did this for all my exams. Great advice, And I got a score I was really happy with. Good luck! It's not the end of the world, no matter what happens, even though it feels that way. I am not doing a job that has anything to do with my HSC mark, or even related to the course I did after I got my HSC mark.

I had to remember complicated maths formula equation to Einstein's. I read it right up to steps of exam room, tossed it into the bin, then immediately went inside with pen and paper wrote it out again. Top marks for that for getting away with it. I studied late (circa mid 1970s) when life already complicated and was difficult to concentrate to study. So I would go to Lady Jane beach near Vaucluse. Would blow one's mind out for about 15 mins, took my mind off everything. Then it felt like the abattoirs and could concentrate perfectly all day. With everyone looking at me strangely as if I was a nun.

Don't worry about it at all. HSC is really not worth the stress.
You're lucky, there are dozens of alternate paths into Uni these days and once you're there nobody will ever care what your ATAR was.

Practice- when studying write practice essays or drafts of your essays remembering the first sentence or key phrase of each new paragraph - if you can remember how you start each new paragraph off it's generally a lot easier to remember the rest once you start writing.

Prioritise - answer the essays first as they generally take the longest to complete and are worth the most marks. Don't take too long answering something if you don't know the answer at first. Skip to the next question you can answer and come back to the ones you skipped later. Do multiple choice last. Try to elaborate as much as you can in your short answer responses if you have time at the end - more is better.

Perspective - honestly don't stress about it. Do as much study as you feel you need but don't overload your brain. Try not to think about it too much and don't put pressure on yourself. At the end of the day all the HSC is just a few hours where you sit in a room and answer some questions. If you get a score that's not that great it's not really going to impact you in your life - from my experience.

just remember theres nothing more important than the tigers

dont stress, fail or pass you live in australia youve got a great shot at everything turning out alright.

might not be through exams, could be through a million other avenues like making your own business, learning a trade etc.

Top Tiger and Marzie gave you good advice, my daughter is doing hers this year as well, she puts in plenty of study, and the bit about the essay's is spot on.
And just remember the simple stuff, calculator, pencils and a few pens in case one stops working during the exam, good advice try not to over think it or stress to much, easy to say harder to do I know, good luck champ

Im going through it aswell, my Trials began at the beginning of this week.

I usually achieve 90s+ in my tests and exams so i'll give you abit of insight into how i study:

- I re-write my essays for english over and over to memorise the important parts (TQE)
- Write notes and memorise them
- Acronyms help
- HIGHLIGHT! Make sure your notes arent black and white, you wont memorise
- Speak out loud

goodluck! and good luck to your daughter too Marzie

100% but try persuading one of us that the HSC doesn't actually mean anything.

I try persuade myself but it doesn't work, once you have set your sights on something you are way too determined to just let it slip.

HSC requires blood, sweat and tears. It's been the worst part of my life and it makes you contemplate the worst. Honestly looking at it from a students perspective, this is the worst educational system I have ever seen. Students are being tested on how fast they can write rather than their understanding and ability to write an essay.

Far too many students are contemplating suicide, going through stressful times..you only have to go as far as the HSC Discussion pages on facebook to see students vent their frustrations. Most commonly are pictures of students pretending to drink bleach to poison themselves, how many people actually do this and go unnoticed.

The system is pathetic and needs to witness a major overhaul, from the way exams are structured to this assistance provided to children. How is it fair that some students are provided with better teachers than other students? How is it fair that students are being scaled due to their school being poor?

Sorry but i could go on forever!

study subjects to music…. pick a different artist you know well for each subject.

then sit down to tests and blast what you know first, leaving anything you are unsure of for a second pass of the test.... then on your second pass dont stress, hum or sing along to the artist for the subject in your head and you will be suprised with what sub consciously surfaces.

Relax and don't panic in your exams. If a few questions throw you for a loop move to a different one and come back.

Enjoy yourself. If you are in the right frame of mind you will do well. You don't hit this by stressing or panicking. Make sure you still have something of a life away from your studies. There will be a time to really knuckle down but if you've prepared well that shouldn't faze you.

Don't let an underwhelming performance destroy your self esteem. There are plenty of opportunities for you when you leave school regardless of how you perform here. Although it feels like a big deal, come next June, how well you perform will be irrelevant to whatever it is you are doing. I know people on both ends of the spectrum (some who did well in school but haven't really kicked on in life and people who did poorly in their HSC who are now doing well for themselves).

That's all I can think of 99% of performance will come down to the frame of mind you are in, if you are well prepared, you'll naturally be in a good head space and will give yourself the best chance of doing well. All the best to everyone sitting their exams.

Definitely relax. I wouldn't rely on it, but if I was struggling, I'd move between short answer and multiple choice questions - sometimes they have questions similar to each other and would help jog my memory
