Just got home from a Luncheon where the guest speaker was Ivan Cleary, very interesting afternoon, very down to earth person. Is very excited regarding Matterson joining us & we have 3 or maybe 5 spots left open for new players.

Did Ivan sound excited about next year?

No he thinks we'll be bottom 2… :unamused:

In that case he is definitely leaving.

He said wasnt silly enough to think we could win the comp but with some signings we could make the eight, also said which Team or Teams did you think would drop out of the eight. He thought Souths & Melbourne this year look good but was hoping his sons Team did well.

Cheers for the info pal.

One thing he said that was interesting is that we didnt offer Matterson as much as Cronulla did, said he wanted to try & be an 80 minute player.

That's a good sign

Sounds like he has the right attitude

Im not surprised. he plays and acts like a professional.

It's a good point.

take a look at the talent on the bench for sharks.

When your that good you'd like more game time.

Look at segyaro has not seen the field as yet.

Makes sense why would he leave the Roosters under contract and go to the Sharks with a great forward pack and be in the same position.

We need to be better for him as well too, so that we don't just become a stepping stone like we have been for others in the past.

He said all this as your guest speaker? Or did you get some one on one time with him to discuss the above!?

I’m over Ivan ,let him go and be Gould’s puppet.nathan is signing long term and I’m actually glad we didn’t throw all our eggs in the one basket .its interesting to see Penrith struggle without Maloney and yes he is still only 20 but he couldn’t spark the panthers when needed .. Ivan is a 40% win coach ,I’m over running ninth and people being happy .. bring in hodgo and let him build the side ..Cleary is gone the moment he works out how to do it .

Haha…Hodgo is a legend and my fave all time WTs player, but hes not the coach for us...who cares if Iv goeas in 2 years just let him keep building what hes been building

I don’t mind if we let Cleary walk on the proviso we get a kings ransom in return and sign Maguire. Happens all the time in NFL and NBA teams trade good coaches for 1st round picks and players.

How motivated do you think IC is going to be if he departs in two years? His eye will be closely on who Riff recruits.

No, I dont believe that, you dont get as far as he has in this game without being a thorough professional and doing you job to the best of your ability

So you are telling me a consultant or builder or engineer with 2 years to run on his current contract won't be properly motivated? Two years of good salary aren't sufficient motivation?

Absolutely correct.
Besides what’s to say we still want him when his contract is up?

I really do not know what all the fuss is about. He has a contract for two years and after that he is a free agent to do what he wants to do.

Being a professional coach he needs good results to keep or get future employment so that’s the motivation. I also think getting a team to 9th is hardly the grounds to be rushing out and trying to extend his contract. If indeed it looks like he will depart in two years, than that gives you two years to come up with another coach
