Ivan Cleary - THREAD..

If Ivan had any brains he’d talk Marshall into retiring…..

Marshall.....”honing his game “
:roll

Why he re-signed him I will never know, way past it

Will be saying the same thing about Farah halfway through next season. Both will limp into retirement.

300 game milestone is my guess. Same with Robbie.

So it confirms Gus lied, penrith wanted/offered him a deal for next year

Are you at all surprised with the lack of values? Strong get stronger.

I am still trying to think of another example of a club losing three above average Australian Schoolboy juniors in one off season.

West’s lost 3 internationals to Manly, another international and a player who would play origin the next year to Newtown, all at the end of the 1979 season.
Wests actually had made the top 5 for the past 2 years, and again in the 1980 season after they all left.

I do remember that now. No wonder the ill feeling between Wests and Manly. Funny, quite the opposite between Balmain and Manly with the links of Frank Stanton, Steve Martin, Ian Thompson etc.

Both Marshall and Farah will be good value if Cleary manages their game time properly.
Neither are 80 minute players anymore . I'm thinking around the 55-60 minute mark with a 4-way rotation with Reynolds and Liddle.
Heighnos career at the Sharks and Knights is a good example of prolonging a career by mainly coming off the bench in recent seasons.
People are forgetting there is no substitution for experience!

Benji’s got the gift of the gab and Ivan doesn’t know who his best 17 are ..

Say no more

Les Boyd, Ray Brown, John Dorahy to Manly & Tommy, Graeme O'Grady to the Jets.
I was 16 or so and really bought into the whole fibros/silvertails things as well, funny how your outlook on things changes as you mature

How was their body language?

Haha. I asked him if it was frosty and he said it didn't look like they were upset with each other. He was seated at Pascoe's table.

Cheers CB, hope your dad had a good night!

Anything else happen worth sharing?

Lawrence wants to keep going. That was the only thing that really stood out for me.

I wasn't upset to hear that.

Good to hear. I’d give him 2 more years & outright captaincy. We could do a lot worse!

Lawrence took a financial hit to help the club, now deserves a payday

Lawrence was overpaid for many years because of his terrible injury so he would still be a mile in front financialy

He wasn't overpaid, he was worth every cent when he signed that contract, he then suffered an injury that would have ended a lot of people's career while representing the club you profess to support. Then for the good of the club took a pay cut, when he could have stayed on the big money. He has more than earned his $ from the Wests Tigers and will probably suffer greatly from his injuries later in life.

It is true to a degree he took a paycut as his deal was due to end in 2017 on over 600k in cap space that year buy extending till 2019 on 300k a year he got an extra year as he had an option at another year in his favour for blizzaro dollars thx Sheens/Humph….then at the time Rowdy took our long term players allowance so cap wise this year virtually played for free....damn good effort by him.. 2 more years

Rowdys on $300k? He's getting ripped off.

Off topic, but I love Chris Lawrence. Incredible club man, intelligent, always portrays the club in a good light, still a hugely valuable player for us. Now.. back to Ivan.

For Cap purposes even less…i remember when a section in high polictcal places and liked toast reckoned he wasnt worth minimum wage so i guess he's getting overs.

I thought that was already proven when he told Weedler, that they had no plan B if Ivan doesn’t sign.

What happened to the 12 applications he got overnight after he sacked Griffen?… :roll ....I suppose they never existed, just another Gus media manipulation statement

Rowdys on $300k? He's getting ripped off.

If memory serves, the club "extended" him basically as a means of spreading out the money he was already owed at a time where he was really struggling to meet first-grade standard. He wasn't yet a worthwhile back rower but was already clearly too slow to play in the backs - it was basically a case of the club preferring to take a $300k cap hit for five years than a $500k one for three (not saying those were the actual numbers, BTW). And Lawrence obviously thought this would be his last contract whatever the length so wasn't fussed (and maybe there's an incentive around something after he finishes up or whatever).

In the end it seems to have worked out well for the club as Lawrence has had something of a second wind in the back row - much against almost every expectation going back a couple of years. TBH if he was off contract now it's hard to imagine anyone throwing a huge deal at him anyway, but having a perfectly serviceable player on a relatively small deal can't be bad for the Tigers.
