Jackson Hastings #251

Think the stumbling block with Hastings was a 200000 quid transfer fee to break his contract, which gets counted against our cap and is essentially dead money
But were a dead and buried club in 2021 unless we get a defence coach AND an organising half, and neither Brooks nor Douhi nor Mbye are the latter
Madge has to roll the dice on Hastings to save his own coaching career IMO...he's bought more deadwood than Ivan tbh, with only Lucy and Laurie having a crack and looking like NRL contenders.
Joffa/Tamou/Douhi/JoeyL and Koepa either underperforming or just dont have sufficient skills to make it,and JtJ too early to tell whether he still has it
I like Madge, but so far Im VERY underwhelmed.Needs stronger recruitment and retention plus player indivudual skill development (most are going backwards),and new approaches to fire up motivation and ownership ,particularly in defence
Were heading for an armwrestle with the Broncos for the spoonspoon unless something changes..fast
Madge deserves better, but he gotta deliver as I dont want another 3 years of this rubbish

Transfer fees dont count against the cap. The player doesnt get the money.

Personally hope Wigan keep him for the next ten years.

Spot on Russell. I don't want Hastings anywhere near the WTs.

You two happy to see us struggle every week because we have a dud halfback?
Oh, he’s a local junior... that changes everything.?

If you believe Hastings is the answer, the wrong question is being asked to the wrong inidivdual.

I rewatched his “highlights” in the super league

Seriously he’s as slow as a wet week and some of the defense he was up against reminded me of us on the weekend

Mitch Moses 2.0 with even less talent

Maybe what you should be looking at is why does Maguire want him in the team?

He is not an idiot.

Could it be the things that dont show up on highlight reels like game management and a good kicking game.

Things we desperately need and dont have in the building.

That must be why all the other clubs in the NRL were lining up for him

Let’s just stick with Brooks the proven match winner.

I didn't say that... But I guess you must think JH is a proven match winner, I haven't seen it tho and it must be why all the other clubs are after him too

JH could be anything, and im happy for the club to take a risk on a man of steel winner. What I do know is that Brooks after 150 games hasn’t got it and changes to our number 7 need to be made sooner rather then later. If it is AR, JH or gun junior like volkman then I’m happy to take any of the above over Brooks.

Thats it in a nutshell.

We are damned if we don't.

A win this week makes this all go away. Another performance like last week and the club may as well stop building the CoE at Concord and start building it in Perth.

This is going to be the issue for some fans when it comes to looking at a replacement for Brooks.

A higher than his true value opinion of Luke Brooks will only see them want the best halves in the game as replacements.

Never mind his position and influence on the team is bordering on toxic and unfixiable.

Can you elaborate on toxic ? Do you mean toxic to results or the culture ? I think the toxicity is more around fans and him being toxic to their mental health , rather than the guys on the field

Put simply we are trying to change a club culture. One of being ok with not playing finals etc. When your chief playmaker can't execute a game plan and is on too much money to be dropped or the club has no better option it has a ripple effect through the playing roster. It's toxic to club culture to reward players who the rest of the squad can see aren't doing their job.

I dont buy that he is only being considered as lock. Pretty sure he might play a game or two there but there will be pressure on Brooks, if he doesn't perform, he can be dropped with a genuine replacement. Happy for that to be the case.

Reading between the lines of what the Pom said he will take Walters spot . We will release Walters even if a swap with donkeys can’t be made

47 games in the NRL and showed diddly squat

One was at a club that had the incumbent NSW halves to learn his trade off & coming off a grand final win

He’s been killing it in the super league, like most NRL outcasts do and people here think he’s the messiah

I suggested in another thread we should look at young talent stuck at powerhouse clubs - who knows, we might get another Daine Laurie / Harry Grant hungry for a crack

Ive already mentioned we should sign someone like a Ronald Volkman, i agree with the youth policy.

Watching Hastings highlights with an open mind i can see he is a tier or two above Brooks in

pass selection-
pass timing-
reading the play -
ball distribution/ bringing those around him on to the ball -
natural footballer - eyes up and in the moment

Ill take that over a guy who has done diddly squat in 150 games.

It’s easier to execute pass selection/timing etc when the line speed of the opposition is of super league standard. That’s the outlier here

Watch the staggered lines and weak first up contact in the videos. Some of them are just basic short passing to blokes at pace and crashing over the line

Now I’m not supporting Brooks, patience is wearing me thin but he has shown those facets of play at NRL level. not this year or last year, but years prior.

That is why our opponents look so good. No commitments or speed in defence. Have a look at how we ball watched last week as guys ran across field, backwards and any direction except forward. Move up as a line and shut the ball down.

It is not rocket science

I remember before we signed Cory Thompson there was about 0 people thinking he would start because he came from super league and had already had a stint in the NRL...

Don't write players off just cause they're from overseas. Plenty of ESL players have been making an impact over here lately

Corey Thompson had a bit of NRL experience prior to going to ESL. Many were surprised he wasn't picked up by another NRL club. No one was surprised Hastings went to ESL. I don't believe any club wanted the drama in their dressing sheds.

This pretty much confirms he'll be here this season. Every time a player denies something on Twitter it ends up happening

Wigan don't want to release him apparently

That’s just them saying show us the money. They want a transfer fee which is fair enough.

Well that de-escalated quickly..

You reckon we’ll get him this year Geo?

Not sure..Hastings has been discussed for 6 months with a view to 2022..they hadn't approached Wigan for an early release at that stage at all

Chammas article is Sam Ayoub 101..timing is everything

Not sure apart from cash is in it for Wigan a pretty pivotal position they would need to find a replacement where halves are just as scarce in the ESL as they are in the NRL..

I don't get it and find it untimely news for us, it's honestly knocked me for six that we're already reworking our plans. I've only heard how on top of things the club are yet there's this sudden decision which could potentially destabilise two clubs and possibly impact another.
Add in the fact how much unwanted attention this will attract to the club/team.
Don't like how this looks at all.
Nothing against our target, as I don't even know who he is.
Poor Cowboys fans thought Ben Barba was the second coming of Jesus when signing him after his Man of Steel win. So think I'll reserve any judgement/opinion on how much a saviour he'll be.

Someone on here said we're in uncharted territory but I see the exact same storyline playing out.
It began with Scott Prince and Brett Hodgson and hasn't changed much at all since then - Tim Moltzen, Shannon McDonnell, Robert Lui, Luke Brooks, Jacob Liddle, James Tedesco, Tui Lolohea, Benjia Marshall, Robbie Farah, Moses Mbye, Adam Doueihi, Pita Godinet, Matt Ballin.
This club has a way of tempting fate.

Lauren,I dont know much about Hastings either, however something isnt right with Brooks...he has gotten worse since a bad year last year...people can blame the coach and any other reason,,,in my opinion and Johns and Fittler both agreed that the forwards did a heck of a lot of work in the lead up attack in the Roosters game and LUKE kicked the ball dead 3 times killing all momentum and giving them 7 tackle sets, no wonder the players were out on their feet come the last 15/20 mins...
BJ and AJ didnt help matters, but we have heard and said many times that Luke must guide and control this team....apparently Madge is at witts end about what to do,this is why the Hastings talk I would imagine....cheers mate...

Don't even want to get into the reasons sorry, think it's been dissected and discussed at length. I'm specifically talking about how unprofessional and indecisive we look as a club. That's all.
It's why I used all those players as examples. We're only good for bandaid solutions in that aspect and nothing seems well thought-out

Yeah... Well said and I agree with you.
It's very reactive.... Not much proactive with us
Amateur

Yeh agree with Ink and Lauren.
You sign these blokes when you're desperate and you end up stuck with them for 3 years or more on too much coin.

Is he that much better than Brooks, Mbye, Madden, Doueihi and Laurie? Id have him in the middle of that bunch based on his first NRL stint.

It's a bit rich coming from a club who has over rated their own players and not made finals in a long long time.

But hey it's a forum lol

I haven't got one. Disappointing to be in this position.

Have to trust Madge as changing coach sets us back even further.
