Joey Leilua #226

What are everyone's thoughts of moving BJ to the back row? Possibly roaming lock?

I believe he'd be good at the role, with that needed "Link" man.

Read somewhere this morning that BJ is interested in moving to the backrow as he stated he wanted more involvement, will have to improve his fitness before this can happen.

No way .... He is not fit enough or quick enough in defense to play up front..
I say we cut our ties and move on from him after this year. Need to resign his brother quickly though

Gives him an excuse to go to Oporto.
Pack some weight on.

definitely a manager driven article. on the outer at WT and putting his client in the shop window in another position for clubs to consider him.

Wests Tigers centre Joey Leilua wants a shock switch to the back row, a position where he would be “devastating, brutal and damaging.”

Leilua has played the majority of his 11-year NRL career at centre but has spoken of a shift into the forwards to become a 111kg wrecking ball.

An edge backrower with the 2009 Australian Schoolboys and at junior representative level with St George Illawarra, Leilua will line up for Wests Tigers’ important match against New Zealand Warriors in Gosford on Friday night.

Leilua comes off contract after 2022 but Wests Tigers have the option for next season. The club is yet to determine whether to retain the former Roosters, Knights and Raiders star.

While not wanting to be seen as pressuring Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire into a position move, Leilua outlined why he wanted to become an edge forward.

Leilua has only started in the back row twice in his 224-game career, both times in his rookie season in 2010.

“I played my juniors in the back row and would love a return there sometime,” Leilua said.

“It’s up to my coach where I play and I have found a home in the centres but reckon I could benefit from a change of position at this time of my career.

“I like to get the ball in the hands and keep busy on the field. I like being in the action.

“I handled back row well as a young bloke and reckon I could succeed there again. I’m only 29 so could adapt back fairly easily.”

Definitely has the size and footwork for it attack wise, not sure he has the motor defensively though.

Can someone clarify?
When a contract states an option in a clubs or players favour surely the terms are already written and agreed to. Otherwise, it is not a contract.

For example BJ’s last year of his contract in the club’s favour must state a dollar figure and if the club wants him to stay that year he knows what he is going to be on? If not it will be a new negotiated contract that he can walk away from, even if the club takes up their option.

I imagine you’re right, either way. If there is an agreed amount written into the option year then it would be non negotiable. Alternatively if the final option year has something like “market value” then it would be non binding. imo Surely the player needs to know what he’s signing on for?

It's just his manager trying to say how versatile he is in hope we take up his club option.

At 550k no chance we take it up. If he keeps doing well maybe get a one year deal on 250-300k. But he's got to earn it.

he can barely make 5 hit ups a game, just doesn't have the work rate or effort to play in the middle. would need to prove himself in nsw cup first too

Old Magpies fans might recall the late Peter Dimond, a champion representative winger, switching to the Maggies second row for a season or two towards then end of his playing career. Move was a great success. Pete was fairly big for a winger though probably not quite as big as BJ. Game is a lot different now but BJ in the forwards just might work.

I would prefer BJ hitting the ball up close to the line rather than Garner ..Bigger ,faster , stronger just saying .
