John Grant hopefuls

Theres an 11 minute video on youtube of his season highlights and world sevens highlights.
He's been the top try scorer in the Shute Shield for the past 2 seasons, 22 this year in the regular season and 3 if i'm not mistaken in the finals.
Judge him by his Rugby performances. If there were a BRET or Wests player ripping up NSW Cup like he is the Shute Shield everyone would be demanding he be given a shot.
I'm not suggesting he should walk right into the fullback role as there are other genuine contenders. I just firmly believe that he should be given an opportunity.

in what year?

Next year.

Check out the video. Wow. This lad could be anything. Big, fast, strong, can tackle, great hands, great swerve, takes the high ball well. Reminds me of a young Lote, Nagas, Mullins.

Our current wingers will be looking over their shoulders big time.

Looking forward to his development.

then what are they judging him on?

I'm not judging him at all.
Ive never seen him play NRL
I'll reserve judgement until I do.
You'd do wise to do similarly.
Time will tell.
Patience.
Peace

yeh Ink - time will tell - hope he turns out to be a diamond in the rough. i hope all you guys are right and that he does crack first grade, i want the best for our team.

At the end of the day John Grant is worth the risk!!!!
Just look at the guy- how impressive is he physically & what we have seen on his highlights!!!!
I hope that Sheens stops with his selections bloopers & that he just has the guys thinking "winning football"!!!!! Proper player management is all that is needed!!!!
Wests have bought well & got rid of the trouble makers- hopefully!!!!
The rest of the teams in this Competition are "ordinary" in terms of sheer talent on their rosters!!!!
But a few of the coaches get the best out of the players by using tried & tested management techniques which Sheens has "failed" at incessantly over the years!!!!!!
John Grant will be sensational if "managed" properly as with the whole team in 2012!!!!

I am happy the club is going outside the box, Grants got enough potential to warrant interest from our code. The best part is, we haven't put massive dollars into him, and it doesn't seem like Sheens has promised him a starting spot, so he still has to earn what he gets.

Looking forward to seeing how he progresses over the next 12 months.

He's only signed for one year so I'm sure he'll get a crack at some stage during the year. At the end of the day he is a winger. It's not the hardest position in League… I think in terms of his attack he will do an adequate job (probably better than Beau) but where he will be tested the most is possibly his defence. That will be the telling factor. He is definitely worth the risk though. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

my tv maybe doesnt work, because when i watched him on tv he didnt look the biggest. This myth about how big he is reminds me off the film braveheart - as william wallace's legend grew. Maybe he's taller than beau ryan but not wider on tv that is - my tv - i hope he is a braveheart just like beau.

Well said AHX, Beau knows Braveheart. You are right though, he has a fair bit of transitional work to do to transfer across from union to league, I hope he makes it. In the meantime, given his speed, he should go well by starting off in the Magpies State Cup Team which is a team of speedstars having won the sprint race on GF day I am told.

I've been one of Grant's biggest fans.

I've seen alot of Grant (AHX he is alot bigger than Beau, he is 6 foot 6 and reasonably broad)

People have questioned his defence, that wont be a drama, he has played alot of 7's rugby, if you can defend in 7's rugby you can defend anywhere.

He tests out of this world on most athletic measures.

He has excellent hands, he will be very good under the highball in attack and defence, and he has had plenty of practice taking them.

He has good footy nous, reads the game well naturally.

The word on him is he works hard and is a pleasure to coach

My concerns.
The up and back of league is foreign to him, and for a big bloke this might take a toll on him and dull his speed.
Dealing with kicks in goal, this aspect of positional play is the only thing more difficult for a winger in league as opposed to union, he will need to learn this, his size again will hurt him in this as well.

The callibre of footballer in NSW cup is similar to the Shute shield IMO, as someone has said, if we had a 22 yo killing NSW cup, we would be calling for him to get a shot.

I have no doubt, if given the opportunity he'll do well, and if he continues to develop i believe he has the potential to be awesome.

The fact is everyone who wants him in FG come round 1 and thinks he'll be a superstar are only basing their opinions on youtube clips. You can make a video of any athlete from any sport, take all his highlights and make him look like a world beater. To me a 5 min youtube clip is meaningless. I've seen alot of predictions of certain players come to nothing in the past and alot of players talked up who are probably pumping petrol these dayz. I saw an old post on the Lote thread the other day where someone gave their backline for 2010 and said it would be the most feared in the comp, and that backline consisted of Tamata in the centres and Ayshford on the wing. Where is Lazaraus these dayz? he was built up delux at one point. I can realy see John Grant going down that same rd. For me, i have no expectations therefore i won't be disapointed should he not do anything

nah make it 7 foot 5 inches and 350 pounds - does that sound better? :master: does any one on this forum know if john grant has ever played rugby league in his life? i'm just hoping that maybe he has some experience with it. I just cant see, unless grant is a revelation - who makes room for him. I'm befuddled and still scratching my head. Someone please speculate - who is he better than in our current squad. 😛ray: people please give him time to acclimatize. What if Wests tigers only bought him because of his size and height - thats sounds scary.
