Latrell Mitchell Contract Discussion

I can cop him choosing another team over us, but there is no way this was all done following rules. Refuse to believe there wasn't more incentive for him to give up a better offer for a longer, much safer term.

Good luck to him if he has a bad year/gets injured.

So $600k for 2020, and $800k second year, but the second year is optional with the club deciding?

Our offer was $800k and $900k for those 2 years, plus $1m and $1.1m after.

Disappointing, but yeah. Onto the next big fish, we just need to land one, and our fortune may turn around.

JAC, lets make it happen.

So glad this (appears) to be all over, and I hope we're not part of the circus in a few months time when he's out of a contract again.

Apart from the fact I hate Souths... I don't understand why the big attraction to playing under Bennett is :man-shrugging:
He is like 70 years old and will be retiring soon , has not done anything in the last 6 years with some good teams , Turned England into a laughing stock for International games.... I cannot believe the NRL are approving this as he has to be getting brown bags from somewhere... NRL is becoming a joke ( My Rant over ) ..

Anyway just another off season of excitement with all our money and nothing :man-gesturing-no:

I think Russel Crowe is a factor. From what I recall back when we were looking at Burgess in England he personally wined and dined him and got him over the line.
Put him and Bennett influence together and you get quite a high profile cocktail ...... which few can resist.

It appears Madge has not turned out to be our saviour , Bennett and him signed at the same time look what we have got compared to what the bunnies have signed. Maybe Madge is on the nose.

Am I reading that Fox article correctly? South's paid $55k for Mitchell to pay out his agent on the condition that the new agent go through with Mitchell signing at South's? Geez, that's highly, highly suss and unethical. That should but won't raise red flags at NRL HQ especially with their supposed crack down on agents and ethical behaviour.

Really? I skimmed through the article and missed that bit. It would have to be included in the cap, surely?

As if we needed another reason to despise the Grubbitohs. The whole ordeal has been suspect and somewhat orchestrated. If he really has signed with the Grubbitohs for less that what the Roosters were offering him (let alone our offer) and the deal is sanctioned by the NRL we can put to bed the concept of notional value. On a positive note it will be fun watching them flop next year with no consistent go forward.

He has a great sense of humour.

Yes 2005, that is a serious accusation

Without wanting to bring the Farah thing up but if we get cut on salary capfor 2 years for what we did they should not even be allowed to do it.. Just shows the NRL have there fav teams

Not many of us know what we want at 22 and Latrell has already achieved and got more than most by playing footy. Stands to reason he might be a bit ambivalent about things, but he will mature. Still think we are yet to see the best from him.

Every indication is that in 10 years time Mitchell will still not now what he wants.

Few can resist brown paper bags.

Oh well, he wants to play somewhere in particular, good luck to him. Yes it was a circus but that was primarily due to the media playing darts as they had as much clue as us. I dare say the club was already looking at contingencies anyway after we removed the initial deal.

Lol, forum meltdown over someone that we withdrew our offer to a month or so ago. He didn't want to come here which i think had been pretty clear and apart from some "in the know" forumers, there wasn't any indication he had changed his mind. Besides, the moment Bennett said they weren't interested, it was guaranteed Mitchell was a Rabbitoh.

You can't blame this on Madge. The bunnies are obviously a stronger and more appealing club to him. NRL players want to win premierships and we haven't come close in the last 10 years. Our rep won't change overnight or with 1 respectable coach. Making the 8 this year and every year on is imperative for us to be considered appealing and even then you won't always land who you want.

Correct. Although this won't please some on here, i must admit i'm starting to question Pascoes ability to get things done. ( i.e selling the club and direction it is heading in) Sometimes i feel like he is learning on the run. We need a kill shortly with all this money.

As usual, Latrell has split the forum between those who want him and those who don't. Those who argue that, at his best, Latrell is a star are correct but the more I think about it the more I wouldn't touch him with a barge pole. I don't think he's ready to commit to three or four years of solid effort. I think he's looking to get some more money and get out. Can't blame him if that's what he wants but it means we should forget him and spend our money where we'll get value for money.

When you have over $1m to spend 2 months before the season starts we don't need to be looking for good value. We need to be looking for the best player possible, even if it means spending slightly above market.

That's what I've been saying... Don't want to spend this cap space on a few fringe first graders especially because we have even more money next year.. Buts that's for another off season of drama :disappointed:

Now is not the time to be thrifty.

Very very true

Well said, I don't blame the club - we do need to get better in some ways there though, but ultimately you've hit the nail on the head.

My problem is with player managers and NRL administrators. This deal simply should not be allowed to happen.

It is a very embarrassing situation we find ourselves in, all this money to spend and unable to sign to players!
