It is a big HUMID country town ...takes some getting used to

Cowboys weigh up Latrell Mitchell, Valentine Holmes contract offers

Valentine Holmes' manager is reportedly set to hand him a "reality check" - and it could sink Latrell Mitchell's interest in playing for the Cowboys.

North Queensland have salary cap space to sign one superstar player on roughly $1 million per season. They can't afford both Holmes and Mitchell.

Holmes, The Mole reported on Wide World of Sports last week, is the Cowboys' preferred choice. The NFL hopeful is a Townsville product who would be returning home and North Queensland attempted to sign him before he went to America.

Nine's Danny Weidler wrote in his Sun Herald column that Holmes' manager, Chris Orr, will soon meet with his client in New York and make clear that he is giving up big money in the NRL while continuing his NFL dream.

Under his NFL deal as a practice squad member of the New York Jets, Holmes is not paid between December and May, according to Weidler.

The Cowboys have set aside seven figures per season for Holmes, but they are taking the alternative option of Mitchell seriously in the meantime.

Weidler wrote that Mitchell's interest in playing for North Queensland had flattered the club and that he would be met at the airport by Cowboys icon Johnathan Thurston when he visited Townsville next week.

The Cowboys will assess Mitchell's headspace, amid a startling fallout with the Roosters, and the Test centre will then spend some time in Far North Queensland pondering his future. Mitchell apparently likes Townsville because the slower pace of life, compared to Sydney, reminds him of his hometown Taree.

Weidler reported that Mitchell would also meet with the Wests Tigers shortly and he offered "a four-year, back-ended deal – $800,000 for 2020, $900,000 for 2021, $1 million for 2022 and $1.1 million for 2023".

Wests Tigers reportedly want Mitchell to play fullback, his preferred position but one in which he would need to develop his game.

It is unclear where the Cowboys would want Mitchell to play. Scott Drinkwater is their current fullback and is contracted for the next two seasons.

Winter is OK .....but I'd prefer a cold night when you can just sleep

I struggle living in Gladstone .....the humidity annoys the hell out of me here and I've been here 27 years

Even on the Tweed the humidity can be intense, any further north Qlders are just crazy tbh

I'm used to humidity , but the night we went to Townsville for the WT's game v NQ when Hoppa went digging for gold would have the be the most unbearable day/night humidity wise I have ever dealt with

You were still dripping with sweat in an air conditioned room

@Roar_Power

Agreed

It was more that media and so called experts had him with us and he ended up at the dogs.

4 year deal at 3.8mil would be a fair deal for both parties. Could potentially be great value for both if we become a top 4 side and Latrell continues to make rep sides.

On Mitchell....a lot will depend now on what Valentine Holmes decides to do.

I can't see him sticking around to be a training squad player on $180k - he might have visions of chasing a dream, but to be honest, I think he'll realise that he has limited time to make his money and he'll take the Cowboys offer.

On the other hand, anything can happen....

Of most concern is he sounded out the Cowboys when we have the best offer on the table financially. What does that tell you? We are second choice...again....

Maybe I'm being cynical...I hope it's just the Cowboys pushing Holmes into a quick decision, but if I'm the Cowboys and I can get Latrell Mitchell right now, I'd take him.

On a side note, it's interesting that we went to him, but he's happy to jump on a plane and go to meet the Cowboys. I don't have a good feeling about this...

From a money standpoint, we are giving him what he's asking....

There seems to be some hesitation on his end about coming to the Tigers which isn't money related.

@weststigers he didn't sound them out though ! It was a clickbait headline with a clear question from the reporter asking if he's be happy to play FB for the cowboys .
If anything it was a way for his manager to drum up an alternate to WT , to try and create a bidding war

Which article was that where the reporter asked him that question? As far as I know, he hasn't spoken to any reporters since he's been in Taree?

Going to keep speaking it into existence. Mitchell a tiger by the end of the month 😎

So we went to Mitchell in Taree. Then he's meeting us in Sydney. Then he might be travelling to North Queensland for a tour up there at the end of the week.

G'day @gallagher: I just can't understand the negativity of the 4 posters immediately following the Adrian Proszenko story.
But then I suppose, hopefully they are the ones who will get the biggest kick when Latrell does sign with the black, white and orange 😛oint_up: :tiger: :santa:

@SeanT
LM is home body and loves TAREE going to Cowboys would be a big test for him to get home would take at least two flights or one flight and a 3 and half hour road trip once or twice may be OK but in a say 35 week season how many trips would take place and what effect would it have on him I think it's all hype and hes seeing whats on offer before signing I think we are still in the box seat when the new tunnel is finished it will be virtually freeway all the way from Sydney to TAREE and make the trip quicker

Yeah weird right? Not sure what to believe...Journos aren't quoting the club in their articles, so I''d say most mobile phones at the Tigers are going straight to voicemail until there's some news...
