The simple truth of the matter is we do not know.
Do I believe what the club has said verbatim? No
Do I believe the Telegraph "journalists"? No
Do I buy into the Machiavellian style subtext that many have been purporting? No
My personal belief is that something happened to Fulton before the warm up in relation to his injection. (I can speak from experience that a pain killing injection for the sternum does not have to puncture the lung to cause shortness of breath etc.)
We do not know what drill the forwards completed before joining the backs out on the field. A common practice is warming up the shoulders and doing some bag work in dressing facilities as extensive as the SFS. During this a injury like a popped rib cartlidge could indeed occur. Or Liams sternum may have been contacted in just the right way to further exaserbate (sp?) the injury he picked up against Manly.
It was also stated in media in the lead up to the game that Heighno and Fulton had been pretty sore and sorry.
Normally we have more of our top squad in the seats watching the game. However both State Cup squads had been given the day off after a bruising Saturday encounter.
Could the media information have been handled better? It would appear so.
Is this all part of a giant cover up? No
For mine it is an unfortunate series of events that culminated in Liam missing the game at very short notice and a scramble to find a player to replace him.
If there were any problems I have zero doubt that, as Kul suggested, there would be an investigation by the club
