Tweeting Tuqiri denies French deal

Lote Tuqiri has denied he is on the verge of signing a deal with a French rugby club, writing on Twitter that he is "not even close" to finalising his future after being sacked by the Australian Rugby Union (ARU).

The former Wallaby and Waratah used his Twitter account to refute suggestions he is about to sign with Bayonne, the same club as former Penrith and NSW halfback Craig Gower, on a deal rumoured to be worth $800,000.

The 30-year-old has just returned from Europe but said he had not spoken to any clubs and his future was yet to be finalised.

"Have heard of the press re myself and apparent signing in France. I'm not even close! As i'm on a break & haven't spoken to anyone..", Tuqiri wrote on Twitter earlier today.

Tuqiri has been the object of interest from the NRL's Wests Tigers and Sydney Roosters, who remain hopeful of enticing the former Brisbane Bronco and Maroons Origin star back to the 13-man code.

The ARU terminated Tuqiri's contract in July over an unspecified incident and the two parties have since reached a confidential financial settlement.

I think we should just wait for a signature confirmation on this one - no point discussing, too much rubbish flying around regarding Lote's future.

Searle said he wouldn't insult Lote with the money they have left on the local news up here but if he really wanted to live up here they would talk. I'm guessing they would have to cut one of their backs.. tigers could try getting Gorden or Tomane off them if they need to free up some cash.

They won't cut one of their top youngsters to sign up Lote for 1 year. Gordon, Tomane, Mead, Tonga are all safe. The only youngster I can see them cutting is Atkins.

My only error of late is my prediction of beating the Dogs by 20\. We got them by 22.

News reports today say that the reason that the ARU sacked Tuquiri was that he had a woman in his room, somewhere, at sometime. I find that just ridiculous to be honest - first and foremost he's a professional footballer.

Wallaby Lote Tuquiri sacked for having woman in hotel room

FOOTBALL superstar Lote Tuqiri was sacked by the Australian Rugby Union for breaking strict team rules by having a woman in his Wallabies hotel room.

At the time, Tuqiri was on his "last warning" for previous behavioural issues.

Tuqiri's $5 million contract was torn up by ARU boss John O'Neill for taking the guest, a 20-year-old, into his room after a night out in Canberra in the week leading up to a Test.

He met the girl, a university student and the daughter of a respected Canberra family, at a nightclub in Canberra before the pair returned to the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The Wallabies were staying at the hotel in the second week of June to prepare for a Test match against Italy.

Team management was made aware of Tuqiri's breach of rules the next day. Tuqiri was not picked in the side for the Test and is believed to have returned home to Sydney before the game. The former rugby league star was sharing a room with team-mate Richard Brown, who was questioned by an ARU disciplinary panel about the evening.
He was reluctant to co-operate because he did not want to dob in a mate. There is no suggestion Brown had anything to do with the woman being in the room.

When approached by The Sunday Telegraph yesterday, Tuqiri refused to offer any comment, other than saying: "I've signed a confidentiality thing. I'm not into legal stuff but I can't say anything."

An ARU spokesman said much the same: "We are not at liberty to discuss the Lote Tuqiri termination issue. As Lote wrote in his Sunday Telegraph column last week, a confidentiality clause exists as part of the settlement."

Tuqiri's shock sacking baffled fans. It is extremely rare for a player in any football code to have a contract torn up in such a public way without explanation.

As a result, rumours swept through rugby union and rugby league circles regarding the circumstances of his dismissal.

In the early stages, ARU boss John O'Neill publicly stated Tuqiri, a father of two, was free to disclose why he was dismissed.

Tuqiri maintained a stony silence. NRL boss David Gallop increased the public pressure on Tuqiri to reveal why he was sacked, telling the player he could not return to league unless he talked about what occurred.

During a painstaking investigation, The Sunday Telegraph discovered O'Neill chose not to go public with details of the incident - despite being accused of a cover-up - out of his respect for the woman and her family.

Even most of O'Neill's senior staff at the ARU have been kept in the dark because of his concerns over the woman being identified and embarrassed.

Tuqiri launched legal action against the ARU for wrongful dismissal. The case was settled out of court for a significant sum after both parties argued at the initial hearing for details to be suppressed from the media.

Tuqiri had a long list of disciplinary breaches, including two major incidents in 2005 and 2007, before he was labelled "Last Chance Lote" when O'Neill took over as ARU chief executive.

In 2005, Tuqiri and Wendell Sailor were fined and received two-match suspended sentences for being out late in a Cape Town nightclub. Tuqiri was also involved in an argument with team-mate Matt Henjak, who was later sent home from the tour.

In 2007, Tuqiri turned up late to a Wallabies training session and was over the limit when tested on a breathalyser. He received a substantial fine and a two-game suspension as a carry over from the incident in South Africa.

In another incident in Brisbane, he was put on a final warning after a late night during which he invited guests to his hotel room - who were later questioned over the bashing of a taxi driver.

That led to an ARU a curfew before the World Cup in France. At the time, O'Neill said: "It was unacceptable behaviour … our conversation with them has left them in no doubt as to what the ramifications are if there is another offence."

Tuqiri's solicitor Mark O'Brien and his manager Les Ross refused to return numerous phone calls or text messages from The Sunday Telegraph.

Wow he had a woman in his hotel room. What's the big deal???

The ARU just wanted to save money.

Lote is going to France. It's done.

For people saying it's not a big deal:

1\. He was already on several cautions.

2\. Team rules were clear.

He deserved to be sacked.

I've heard that he (finally) wanted the story "leaked"…........it came through the TELE, the paper HE WRITES FOR. It wasn't the ARU.

Why? Because there's been too many rumours that it was something much, much worse.

He originally didn't want it out as it's humilating for his wife.

The only bad part and the sole reason it should not have been leaked. This should be kept private and they should only have said he had a late night drinking session or something like that.

Well he's a winger, so it's not like he'll be doing anything in union!

Lote seeks pay day before switch

Glenn Jackson | September 8, 2009

LOTE TUQIRI's immediate future may not be as cut and dried as rugby union or rugby league - he could be playing both codes next year.

The Herald understands Tuqiri is considering playing rugby union in France throughout the rugby league off-season before joining an NRL club a few months into the next NRL season - and at least one club is believed to be open to the idea.

Much of the speculation about Tuqiri, sacked by the ARU for breaching protocol by reportedly inviting a woman back to his hotel room, has centred on whether he would pursue the big-money deals in France or take a pay cut to rejoin his former code.

But Tuqiri may be tempted to have the best of both worlds by signing with Bayonne, the French club to which he has been most closely linked, before joining an NRL team after the French Top 14 competition ends in April/May next year.

Tuqiri has held talks with officials from Sydney Roosters and Wests Tigers. And the former Brisbane Bronco is believed to have raised the prospect of a mid-season start in the NRL with the Tigers, who are believed to be considering it as an option.

The Tigers were at the centre of a union-league tug-of-war with their star player Benji Marshall earlier this year. The five-eighth had hoped to sign a deal with a Japanese rugby club before returning to the Tigers but that proposal prompted NRL chief executive David Gallop to effectively ban him from doing so.

Gallop last night said the two scenarios were different and he would, ''on the face of it'', allow Tuqiri to carry out the cross-code switch if he wished to.

''It would be great to have Lote back playing rugby league,'' Gallop said. ''He just has to be registered by the 30th of June. What we said before with a player like Benji Marshall is he can't be under contract to both codes at the same time. He [Tuqiri] couldn't sign with a rugby league club and then sign with rugby union. As long as it wasn't a contrived arrangement … we'd just have to be satisfied it wasn't a case of a player being under contract with both codes. He could be under contract with rugby union and do a deal with an NRL club.''

Tuqiri remains keen to stay in Sydney, given his family has settled in Birchgrove. Curiously, he asked on his public Twitter account last Friday how the Tigers were faring against Parramatta.
