Sydney Roosters target former Dragons prop Jason Ryles and Lote Tuqiri
By Stuart Honeysett
September 16, 2009 The future of Willie Mason at the Sydney Roosters is in doubt following revelations that the club is chasing former Test prop Jason Ryles and sacked Wallabies winger Lote Tuqiri's negotiations with a French rugby club have ended.

Mason is contracted to the club until the end of the 2010 season, but speculation has been rife all year that he will be released to pursue a career in Japanese rugby union.

That speculation will only intensify after it emerged the club is interested in former St George Illawarra prop Ryles, who is playing in France with Catalans Dragons.

Tuqiri could loom as another option after the French rugby club he was expected to sign with, Bayonne, pulled out of talks because it was unhappy with his price tag.

While Bayonne's interest has cooled, Stade Francais, the club of former Dragons captain Mark Gasnier, is believed to be still interested in Tuqiri.

Bayonne's withdrawal from talks with Tuqiri could be a negotiating tactic, but the club is also chasing South Africa winger Brian Habana while Brisbane Broncos fullback Karmichael Hunt could be a target before his move to the Gold Coast-based AFL team in 2011.

Tuqiri has been looking for a new club since the Australian Rugby Union sacked him for breach of contract. Tuqiri eventually settled out of court in a confidential agreement.

NRL chief executive David Gallop has said he will refuse to allow a NRL club to sign Tuqiri unless the Wallabies winger declares the reason for his sacking.

Tuqiri had earlier offered to disclose the reasons for his dismissal before doing an about-face and saying the terms of his settlement with the ARU meant he couldn't.

Gallop and Tuqiri recently bumped into each other in Sydney and had informal talks, the NRL boss indicating he would be keen to see the former Wallaby return to the code he started in.

However, Gallop maintained it was standard business practice for any employer to ask an employee why they had been sacked from their previous job.

"There's never been any suggestions by us that we want to broadcast it to the world," Gallop said.

"Despite the speculation, for all we know it could be something completely different."

The Roosters are favoured to sign Tuqiri if he returns to the NRL, given chairman Nick Politis has expressed a keen interest in him.

There has been speculation that Politis is also opposed to Gallop's insistence Tuqiri disclose his sins before he is allowed to sign with a club.

It is believed the Roosters could only offer Tuqiri a back-ended contract that would see him earning just $120,000 in 2010, with more money in subsequent years.

"He's been an amazing player over the years so I'm sure any club would be interested in him," Roosters recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan said.

"But it will be interesting to see if anyone can afford him. What he is worth and what he can earn are two different things."

Wests Tigers are also interested in Tuqiri and coach Tim Sheens contacted him before the winger flew to France on a recent whirlwind trip.

The Tigers are keen to use Tuqiri as a fullback and are also believed to be prepared to offer him a back-ended contract.

"We had a meeting a couple of weeks ago but he's got to sort out what he's doing," Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell said.

"It's his call. He's got to sort out where he is with union or league or whatever and we can see what happens from there.

"We'll be able to tell him then what we can or can't do."

Bayonne talks not over, says Tuqiri

Rupert Guinness | September 16, 2009

FORMER Wallaby Lote Tuqiri remains optimistic that his talks with French club Bayonne will continue despite the Top 14 outfit saying it has pulled out because of his ''financial demands''.

Tuqiri, who earned 67 Test caps before the Australian Rugby Union cut his contract in June and visited the Bayonne club in south-west France last month, believes a deal could still be brokered.

''I'm still confident that our negotiations can go on,'' Tuqiri told the Herald yesterday. ''Something may have been lost in translation, or misunderstood in communication.''

A statement released by Bayonne yesterday said: ''Following the latest financial demands of Lote Tuqiri, Bayonne have decided to bring talks with the Australian player to an end.''

But as Tuqiri's former Wallabies and Waratahs teammate Adam Freier indicated on his Twitter site, French clubs have a reputation of taking such steps as part of the negotiating process.

''Don't be fooled by Bayonne pulling out of the Lote race. Lots of French clubs do it. Don't be surprised if they announce his signature next week,'' Freier wrote on Twitter yesterday.

Freier later said withdrawing from talks over a possible player deal is regarded as an example of ''classic negotiating''.

Bayonne, a rich club, would not believe it is the only French club interested in Tuqiri either.

While Tuqiri was in France, he also canvassed other playing opportunities there. So Bayonne would realise that by pulling interest in him, other clubs with an eye on him may also emerge.

Tuqiri has also not discounted playing rugby league in the NRL again either, even though such a prospect would probably require him accepting a salary cut on what he enjoyed in rugby.

Tuqiri had intended on taking legal action against the ARU for his sacking in late June, but settled out of court with the national body last month after being paid an undisclosed amount.

The ARU tore up his five-year contract, estimated to be worth $1 million a year, for a breach of team protocol at a Canberra hotel.

Clearly his preference is Rugby, judging the quotes in the above article.

he wont go to the roosters, they are a club going nowhere fast, he would want to be part of a club with a chance at success

No, I see him as being a principled person who would love the challenge of taking a team from the wooden spoon to the top eight. Money would be a secondary concern. You only have to look back and understand that he joined rugby union to help out the young guys in the NSW team (he has a soft spot for canetoads). Lote does not concern himself with mere money. I am sure that in his talks with Politis he would insist that a big proportion of his contract money would go to charity. He would only use the match payments for himself.

I just saw an interview with Lote on FOX sports.

He said he was trying to get a rugby contract in France, but if he was to play league which is still a possibilty, then the Tigers look to be the best fit as he lives in the areaa, likes the coaching staff and sees the team as one that is definitely on the way up.

Cmonnnnnnnnn Lote…...........sign up!!!!

Man how good would we be with him......yikes!!!!

PS.......Id have him as FB in a second,

Simon, once again your comments are spot on.

Lote would be great for Wests Tigers on so many levels.
I really hope that he does his rugby with time to come back here in our winter.

In todays Sydney confidential,Lote is pictured with his girlfriend, the caption says Lote making his first public appearance since negotiating a mega rich contract in France.
Sounds all over to me,or maybe just media talk.

If he named the Tigers as the best fit then IMO it is all over and he MUST have stitched a deal up in France.

If he had a hope of playing NRL there is no way he would name Tigers as best fit and limiting his bargaining here.

Really? Where are they these days?

I see them training at Moore Park a lot. The fields outside the SFS have been done up as training facilities for both the Swans and Roosters. However its wide open, so maybe they do certain ball work sessions elsewhere.

**Tigers step up bid for Lote Tuqiri**

BALMAIN great Benny Elias has started organising third-party agreements to entice former Wallaby winger Lote Tuqiri to Wests Tigers next season.

Tuqiri will hold another meeting with Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens today.

It is understood the meeting will take place at Balmain Leagues Club.

Tuqiri, though, is still favouring a move to French rugby union club Bayonne.

Sources claim Bayonne have offered Tuqiri a staggering $800,000 a season.

Bayonne this week announced they had shelved plans to sign Tuqiri but The Daily Telegraph understands talks have re-opened.

But Wests Tigers will not be deterred by Bayonne with Elias helping to broker a deal to lure the former Broncos star to the joint-venture club.

"We are most certainly looking at getting someone involved,'' Elias said. "I have already had discussions with a potential third party.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

"I will forward any details to the club and to [chief executive] Stephen Humphreys and [chairman] Dave Trodden.

"The third party is very interested in working something out. We have to go through the right avenues but obviously a third party would be most welcome. We would love to have Lote here.''

Sheens and Tuqiri held their first meeting a month ago.

Tuqiri lives in the Balmain area and is seriously considering a stint with the Tigers, who want him to play at fullback.

But the French money might be an over-riding factor.

"Tim met Lote recently and it was a very good meeting,'' said Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys.

"We always expected there to be a follow-up meeting. It is more a football-related meeting. It isn't a meeting whether negotiations will take place.''
