Sydney Roosters to offload Setaimata Sa to accomodate Lote Tuquiri
By Brent Read and Margie McDonald
August 20, 2009 Sydney Roosters are ready to step up interest in Lote Tuqiri by cutting loose Setaimata Sa at the end of the season, creating significant room to manoeuvre under the salary cap.
Tuqiri, engaged in a court case with the Australian Rugby Union for unfair dismissal, has publicly stated he would take a pay cut to return to the NRL next season.
However, the extent of that drop in pay could be mitigated if the Roosters can find a new home for Sa.
**The Wests Tigers, the only other club interested in Tuqiri, have dropped their interest after a slew of phone calls to the dual international's manager went unanswered.**
That leaves the Roosters as the only team in the market for the dual international.
But Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce denied there was any high level of interest in the sacked Wallabies winger.
"We haven't had any discussions with Lote Tuqiri's management or Lote," he said.
"It's common for people to think that clubs will always be interested in those quality of players."
Although Mark O'Meley and Craig Fitzgibbon are among the players leaving for England at season's end, some of that money has been used to extend and upgrade the contracts of Mitchell Pearce, Ben Jones, Anthony Cherrington and Jake Friend.
The Roosters are also in the process of re-signing fullback Anthony Minichiello and is close to officially unveiling former Canberra five-eighth Todd Carney.
