**The defector who came in from the cold: Tuqiri's return imminent
GLENN JACKSON
January 28, 2010**

THE saga of Lote Tuqiri and Wests Tigers is all but over. The club is set to finalise the signature of the dual international within days - and he might turn out for them sooner than expected.

The Herald understands Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys left the country last night for Britain, where he is expecting to confirm the signing of the 30-year-old.

Negotiations between the NRL club and Tuqiri, who is playing rugby union in England with Leicester, have been ongoing since midway through last year, and it appears the Tigers will finally net their man, who was sacked by the Australian Rugby Union controversially last year.

Club chiefs have been attempting to have the deal cleared by the NRL's salary cap auditor Ian Schubert for several months, but it is understood the Tigers are now in a position to officially sign Tuqiri, in what would be a significant boost for the code. He would join other high-profile defectors Wendell Sailor and Mat Rogers in returning to league after extended stints playing rugby.

Tuqiri has enjoyed success with Leicester, with speculation emerging last week he might extend his deal with the club, but that now appears unlikely. Wests Tigers had initially hoped to unveil Tuqiri after the conclusion of Leicester's season in May, but there are now suggestions he could be available much earlier. Leicester Tigers head coach Richard Cockerill last week revealed Tuqiri's contract with his club runs out at the end of March, opening the door for Wests Tigers to lure him home just a few weeks after the club's season-opening game against Manly.

Confirmation of Tuqiri's signing would be a significant boost to the Tigers on the eve of the new NRL season. The club has not reached the finals since winning the premiership in 2005, and many have felt they are one strike weapon away from being in a position to repeat those feats. Tuqiri would fill that void.

Sailor, Tuqiri's former Brisbane and Wallabies teammate, certainly believes Tuqiri will be in the NRL this season.

''The last time I chatted with him he'd just played in the snow, and he wasn't real keen on the winter conditions,'' Sailor told AAP.

''I asked him if NRL was an option, and he said it's definitely an option, especially after seeing what myself and Mat Rogers have done the past couple of years.''

well, i hate to say it, but I told you so
the whole thing was done and dusted back in October

Tried to stay out of this 1000 page saga as much as possible.

Surprised how many people seem to not want Lote at all. Especially with Tuiaki facing a very uncertain 2010 I think Lote is a fantastic replacement. If a 35 year old slow Wendell can have a pretty decent season in the NRL, and broken down Matt Rogers is still going all right, im sure Lote at 30 is up to it. I actually think he will tear it up as the season goes on.

Will put bums on seats too. Hopefully he starts as close to Round 1 as possible.

Good news for the Tigers, the timing of Tuqiri's signing was always going to be the major sticking point.

As soon as it's official shut this thread down, there are some on here who havn't seen their families for months.

Spot on Eddie… He's a man mountain and will tear it up on the wing! I wonder if he is seriously being considered by Sheens and co for FB down the line or if it was just babble... should be interesting.

I really hope this comes off. Just to finish the gibberish as much as anything.

With rumours abounding regarding the length of Tuiaki's recovery & a few reserve graders as depth outside back is our weakest position. We need him to round out the side very very nicely.
It may also allow Moltzen to ultimately go back to his rightful position. Without Tuiaki in the team I think Moltzen is pretty much a certainty for fullback this entire season & that would be a shame.

i would be a little concerned if he had a history of knee problems and so on.
but to my knowledge he has had a pretty good run.
while i haven't seen him play since leaving the nrl ,can someone who does follow union confirm any long term injuries in his past.
he was a great athlete while in the nrl,and if the injury gods have been good to him i can't see how his signing would be a negative.
will be interesting to see how he is judged each week.

Actually no it wasnt.. was only in the last 4 weeks that things settled

depends how you look at it, but it was in Oct when the runs were being scored

Who cares..TBH I've lost interest in Tuqiri…I reckon we'll go well in 2010 without him anyways...if he does play for us it will simply be a bonus.

Good move Tigers!

Mason = No Way!
Lote = YES

I reckon Lote could be the answer for our rather light in experience troublesome position - Fullback.
Moltzen needs to go to halfback.

Guys, Tim Moltzen comes up in almost every 3rd posting. He is a guy that gets rave reviews even from non WT fans.

Has anyone asked him where he would prefer to play or what position he feels he his best at ????

A gun at 7 but then AJ or young Lui miss out.

At # 1 then some of the youngsters like Mullaney or Lazerus may end up at other clubs….

Lote will further conmplicate the issue.

I love it

if last year is anything to go by then i think halfback is his best postion. him and Benji are close mates and seem to have a great understanding of each others game and that can only be a good thing for the tigers

Moltzen has been quoted in the media several times that HIS preferred position is in the Halves…..

When's Lote coming again?????

Moltz played in the halves in schoolboys, for BRET, for the junior roos and in the NYC. He only moved to fullback when Hodgo signed with the Giants. Sheens pushed him back there to get him used to playing at fullback.

this was reported somewhere last year, not sure where though
