Luke Brooks: That Punch

Got slapped, eye poked and the ball pegged at his head. Cant stand seeing players doing this sort of stuff and getting away with it so was happy to see Brooksy give it back. Good on him

So you're OK with having the team down to 12 men for 10m during a game because a player can't control his temper?? If we condone this, might as well bring back the Cattledog call, and go back to the 70's.

It was stupid and he shouldn’t of done it. At the same time, it was good to see him fire up and Gagai deserved it.

Show me fire by throwing a 15m pass, or by tackling a second rower front on, and put him to the ground. Are we sure that there wasn't also some "self-frustration" with his form and what others had been saying about his game that may have got the better of him?

The punch was dumb, really dumb. We were lucky that Cummins found a way to get Gagai off as well. Yep he deserved a could belting but you have to be smart - kick it high to him with chases ready to just hit him, get the forwards to rough him up.

He's just lucky WTs lifted as a result and souths fatigued or he'd be getting crucified. Good outcome considering and glad he at least did 10mins for punch that landed which rarely happens in the NRL. (shame it didn't leave a mark tho)

Stupidity cost us the game ....if he'd used his head after gagai hit him 1st we could have evened the numbers up

This is exactly what I mean ......these blokes don't have an ounce of footy sense about them

Can't agree there ,it was a line in the sand moment that we are not going to take crap any more it shows the players are on board with Madge it was good to see the first man in to cover Brooksy back was Harry and young AJ joined the push and shove as well almost knocking Cummins out of his way to support his team mates.

In the modern game it was dumb and could only lead to one outcome. Typical of Brooks mentality, he just doesn’t read the game and do what is needed. In this case the smart thing would have been to do nothing.

and keep taking the same crap each week I'm sure Mike if you look hard enough there will be a section on netball somewhere on the forum

I have a vague memory of him being binned years ago for a professional foul. Got a standing ovation.

Your right & that was against Souths as well.

**Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire had no criticism of Luke Brooks's punch on Souths winger Dane Gagai**, despite the play landing the No.7 in the sin bin for 10 minutes and facing a possible ban for striking.

Genuine punches have been rarer than contested scrums in recent years but Brooks's haymaker collected Gagai flush and that plus the ensuing all-in brawl seemed to spark the Tigers and rattle the Rabbitohs, who only just hung on to a 26-24 win at Bankwest Stadium on Thursday night.

"They got one each, kept it square (with Gagai also sin binned)," Maguire shrugged.

"That's one of those ones, there was a bit of heat there and it's part of what made the game.

**"I thought it (the determination) was there beforehand but it certainly sparked something in the boys and got them going**."

Souths coach Wayne Bennett also had no issues with the melee, questioning whether it even deserved to be called a "fight".

"It didn't hurt anybody. It was a scuffle," Bennett said.

"The referee handled it well, I've got no problems. Players all know the rules there, I don't have any criticism."

Outside of the fisticuffs, Maguire praised the fight in his team as a whole.

"We gave away too much possession at the start but the effort, I was really proud of the way the boys looked after each other out there," he said.

"You could really see the determination that's been building in the team throughout the season. It came alive in the second half and the boys were really determined to get that win.

"Unfortunately sometimes you don't get what you deserve but the effort and the way they went about it, I was very proud.

"There's a lot of belief in the team, I've seen that.

"The second half was one of our better ones, the way we stuck at what we planned to do and stuck to the process and put the opposition under pressure.

"We just made it hard for ourselves in the first half, probably a couple of cheap ones there and put ourselves under pressure having to chase."

Departing five-eighth Benji Marshall was exceptional in the comeback.

"He tried really hard, he actually hurt his ankle in the first half and was in a bit of pain there but he stayed out there, put that to the side and worked really hard for his teammates," Maguire said.

"He was really strong along with Brooksy and the whole team, they really had a crack tonight."

It cost us on the scoreboard. Just plain dumb.

It was a brain melt for sure, we've never really seen that from Brooks, and I suspect part of it was borne out of frustration given the way he has played this year. Couldn't fault his effort last night but the execution (aside from the right hook) was lacking.

We all complain Brooks is too quite. He was a playing like Tiger for the first time tonight, I don't care about the punch. He competed heavily tonight, I want to see him animated, I want to see him barking orders - we all know he has the talent all he needs is the balls.

Let's be real our season was gone after the Warriors game, everyone asked for the Tigers to compete for the remainder of the season and that's exactly what were doing.

AD yelling out to the souths players playing the mental games before kick off, Nofo screaming into the crowd after Brooks try. Grant fighting for every single inch in the game. This is what we all wanted to see.

First time in years I haven't felt sick after our traditional season ending loss in the final rounds. This club is heading in the right direction.

If you, like me, have been wondering when Brooksy will no longer be regarded as an emerging player, that moment may have arrived last night?
Brooksy had his Lewis/Geyer moment which may have asked the question..”do I have a team?” Why? Who’s asking? Ok, it was more subtle than the Lewis/Geyer moment, and it didnt Turn the game on and by itself. But at the same time it did help to maintain a very spirited performance. Yes I think Madge owes Gags a beer.

Showed a bit of fire. I had no problem with it.

Everyone says he's a cat/nice guy/too quiet, he gives a renowned jerk some and now he's too lively. Never going to keep everyone happy.

It wasn't a dog shot, it was provoked and Gagai deserved what he got.

Tommy would have loved it.

The so-called punch that would not have busted a pimple was nothing to the pathetic winger on the left that cost the team the game.

I find it quite unbelievable that someone is going to blame a 19 year old playing alongside another rookie for losing that game.
