Cleary

Not in any real order but jeez the cupboard is extremely bare.

Personally I thought Brooks was great against Parra and I tip my hat to the bloke. Not being a big fan of the bloke in the past, we have always known that he had ability to be a decent 1st grade half back, but for some reason something was always lacking.
For the past several weeks, he has been playing good footy, but its easy to play that way against a 2nd tier team (Knights, Dragons, under strength Panthers). But to stand out at half back against a top four side, in a well beaten team with no real forward momentum, and not drop your bundle or drop you intensity, that is really something. Now I'm not getting carried away here, and these are only examples but the likes of JT or DCE or even Cleary (Nathan), play that way in similar circumstances, when they can't lead a team to a win, they will drag the team along with them. Unlike say Moses, Hunt, Taylor, Dearden, etc. The difference between true half backs and those blokes that wear the number 7 on their backs.

You may be right IDK really, but if I had the option of taking anyone on the list below for equal money, to be in the Tigers team today, it would be Brooks, Cleary or Hughes. In all honesty. And 2 on my shortlist have the luxury of working in a team that are hungry on every play, sprinting off the line in D hungry.

Cleary age 23. 111 games
DCE age 32. 249 games
Hughes age 26. 73 games
Reynolds age 30. 218 games
Moses age 26. 164 games
Pearce age 32. 301 games
Brooks age 26. 162 games

Im not convinced Hughes would look better than Brooks outside of Melbourne. Cleary is the real deal, a great halfback.

It really puts into perspective how hard it is to develop a quality number #7

Now I would put the above ahead of Brooks but there is also a lot of circumstances and unknowns

Cleary - lol no chance he’s leaving Penrith
DCE - Comfortable 1 million a season at Manly, offer him the keys to Campbelltown and he wouldn’t budge
Hughes - Shown real good form these last couple years but looks like a typical Melbourne storm player. Would be risky outside their system
Reynolds - gone to Brisbane
Moses - as much chance as Andrew Johns playing for us
Pearce - May have a strong case of pastitisis and has a few burnt bridges with us.

Based on that list Hughes and Pearce would be our only realistic options / upgrades, and even then comes with a lot of unknowns.

Long story short… I’m happy with Brooks provided he keeps his form up.

Brooks has been excellent for a while now. As the team gets better players he will be fairly judged. Not saying he is leading us to a title but whether you rate him or not he’s one of our best players. I’m happy with his recent form.

Hastings or Junior Pearce as another half will make a huge difference. Douhiei who I liked at 6 is a better centre and it’s not close.

The Roosters gave Pearce the flick because they couldn’t see him leading them to the title…. even with a good team around him.
No way he leads us to one.
You’re right regarding Brooks- he won’t lead us to one either.
Only difference is we are not ruthless about winning so keep him here.

Pearce already did lead them to a title in 2013. They let him go cos they wanted Cronk.

I agree, all too often when something’s not working quite the way it’s supposed to a change in personnel can put us deeper into the hole. That’s assuming it was possible?
I honestly believe Brooks is as good as any current halfback. The stats support that view. He may have been flat from time to time because of disorganisation and distractions resulting in a huge number of roster changes. I think his form has improved over the last 6 or so games, but you could say the same about the rest of the team. He may have found his happy place? Happy with the direction of the club?
I’m not totally against recruiting older players slightly down on form, but they need to have a motivational factor, a point to prove, unfinished business. It will be interesting to see how Reynolds goes up north. It’s a big deal pulling his 5 kids and wife out of their environment.
I’ve noticed when we’ve recruited experienced players, they go ok in the beginning, but then their form plateaus at a lower level. I realise that nobody joins an organisation without positivity and they do it with a good heart, so it has to be some kind of influence projected by the organisation? Having said that, this season is shaping up really well and a good result against the Storm will put the whole club on the front foot for a run to the finals.

Brooks is a useless halfback, always has been, always will be.
He doesn’t think tactically, doesn’t control play, doesn’t inspire the team, doesn’t control his kicking game, doesn’t apply pressure through repeat sets and goes into his shell when the torch is applied.
He is a ball runner with adequate defence and a decent passing game.
The reason he looks ok currently is because he is running the football. He’ll be the 5/8 when Hastings gets here.

Yep, way back in 2013. and then they ditched him as soon as they realised he wasn't getting them a premiership again.
He's not going to get us close to one now, either will Brooks.
Difference is we're all nice guys and won't punt him.

They ditched him for Cronk. If Cronk wasn’t available, Pearce would still be a Rooster.

Jahrome Hughes is a terrific footballer. "Plays what's in front of him" as they say. Can really sniff out a run too.

Only one halfback has more forced drop outs to his name. And he is the blues # 7.
Only one halfback has more try assists and that is the eels #7.
