Option A) Sack Brooks. Option B) sack Maguire.
I could honestly live with Maguire staying around if the club selects assistants to help him and to help Brooks pack his bags. But I’ve been a fan long enough to realise that is way easier said than done so option B is definitely the more likely.
Ideal world for me would be to show them both the door but we can’t have everything can we.
Ha so a coach of Cleary's calibre can work with Brooks and in doing so he wins the Dally M, bur Maguire cannot? If this is what you are suggesting, it is an astounding admission of failure on Maguire's part.
Brooks seems very weak mentally and reluctant to assume the role of a take-no-prisoners leader. Very meek and mild, it's no surprise that a bum-patter coach like Ivan would get the best out of him. Madge's style of coaching would require a alpha-male type halfback who isn't afraid to call the shots out there and rip into teammates when needed. If Maguire is still here next season Hastings just might be that player, he at least seems to not be a shrinking violet. Who knows though?
I would not say Brooks was weak. He tries every time he plays. The problem is his decision making is so poor. He needs a leader in the spine to tell him what todo. That’s something Brooks himself can’t do. Before it was either Robbie or Benji doing the calls. Brooks is a good footballer but he is just not a leader. He would do well elsewhere with experience players calling the plays.
He is weak mentally, not in a disparaging way, but weak as in telling other blokes what to do, cajoling them and getting them to play their best so that he in turn can play his best. All the top halfbacks of any era are blokes that will talk and tell at teammates incessantly. Johns, Sterling, Maloney, Cronk etc etc, all of them were leaders with their talk. Brooks has none of that.
I like the bloke and have backed him for a long time but from what I saw of him on Sunday especially, he doesn't care at the moment. Those pathetic, nothingness inside-ball drop-offs he did all game were glaring signs of a bloke who couldn't be bothered what the final scoreline was.
Bottom line, Brooks is not and never will be a leader.
He can still be a very good player for your team, as Cleary demonstrated.
I agree but he needs a new club.
Our coach needs to be shown the exit door. Amazing how a new coach, with new ideas, a different approach to coaching can invigorate a squad and attract new players.
