"I don't think the way he wants to play suits the Tigers team..."

@joshreynolds9 opened up on Michael Maguire's coaching style and why he's not the right fit for the Tigers moving forward.

LISTEN: tab.cm/3ncLJCo

Funnily enough i dont think the way Reynolds played while he was with us suited the club either. He was an overpaid non performer

Reynolds was always a bad match for Brooks ...Reynolds only looked good with Hodgkinson .....

To be fair, everyone tried has been a bad match for Brooks

I watched the Joel Caine video and most things he says are spot on. He talks about character, leadership, inner drive, loyalty and such and makes a point to keep Madge and lay more responsibility on the playing group.

How many players in the squad next year weren’t signed or re-signed by Madge?

Now everyone is saying it’s not the coach, it’s the players? Give me a break, it’s his team and they aren’t bleeding for him. He signed them and they don’t respond to his coaching.

If Madge keeps his job for next year then some players have to be cut. Not just those whose contracts have expired. If he is a good coach surely he knows who are the ones not backing him. Let’s see what happens.

‘I don’t think it suits the Tigers’: Reynolds reveals Madge flaw as sack looms

Former Tigers playmaker Josh Reynolds has claimed his old club have failed to recruit a team that fits Michael Maguire’s coaching style in a move that is likely to cost the ex-Souths coach his job.

Maguire is facing the axe after finish 13th on the ladder with just eight wins with the Tigers’ lack of defensive resolve in their Round 25 loss to the Bulldogs a lightning rod for the club to kick off a review.

**Reynolds, who left Concord for Hull FC last season, suggested Maguire had also struggled to adapt to the modern game after winning titles in England and Australia**.

“They’re (Tigers) at a bit off a crossroads,” Reynolds told The Big Sports Breakfast.

“They either stick with Madge, but then they haven’t really bought too many different players … they brought Jackson Hastings in and I think he will add a bit to the squad, but not sure where he’s going to play.

“Me and Madge had a very honest relationship. He was honest with me … but I don’t think sometimes the way he wants to play suits the Tigers team.

“I had this conversation with one of the boys over here today about Madge when he was with the Wigan side.

“**He said, when you had (Sam) Tomkins out the back of the play, that the Tigers are playing – he was unstoppable when they won the competition [in 2010]. It obviously suited that Wigan side, but I don’t think it suits the Tigers.”**

Reynolds also said players were likely to be affected by the constant talk of their finals drought.

The former Bulldogs playmaker also leapt to the defence Luke Brooks who has often been a target for criticism.

“It’s a confidence thing, all they (Tigers) hear about is not making the semis,” he added.

“I think personally they still have got a fairly good squad. Whether Madge is the man there or if they go in another direction.

“Even the players, the players probably want some to change. You’ve got guys like (Luke) Brooks there – he gets the blame a lot of the time for a lot of their woes, but I watch him play and he puts his body on the line body puts his heart on the line. He cops a lot of the brunt.

“You’ve got to put players around him, I think his best footy is ahead of him.”

Regardless of what you think of Grub or what we paid him, he was an origin series winning five eight, and players will listen to his opinion.
The 2 highlighted quotes are what plenty on here have been saying for a long time, Madge has lost touch with the modern game, and can't adapt a style to suit his squad. This is alarming because he can't attract these so called players to boost the squad to get where he wants to be

Very good response by Joel caine

Very well said Joel!!!
I appreciate your honesty in admitting to not being a winner in your playing days. However, you're sounding like a winner now.
How did you make the transition?
At what moment did you discover your winning hunger?
Was it a "aha!" moment? Or did it grow over time?
Keep up the good work!

Totally get what he's saying.
I don't know what it is that is exactly wrong with us, but just that everything has often looked out of sync and out of whack.
Like I get there's leadership and roster problems however it just feels like we're trying to force a square peg in a round hole.

All these outsiders to the club giving their views, opinions etc. Lots of click-bait etc etc.

But not one is part of the review process.

Great debate for a forum; the real action stems from within club.

I guess the real proof of the value of the review will be what we are informed of later.

I doubt that.
Any valuable information discovered during the review will be concealed from public view.
The questions I have are..
1. Is the review impartial and without prejudice?
2. Can the findings of the review be acted upon?
3. If not, why not?

Can someone tell me what hes actually achieved in the past 3 years to deserve our support, and how our future will improve by maintaining Madge..cause Im at a loss to see it.
Understand there are problems in the playing group.but ....he has signed almpst all of them,so hes accountable surely?

Do you like the trajectory of our results? The clunky disjointed, disorganised attack? The backwards and sideways arm grabbing defensive structures and techniques? Please tell me what on earth you have seen from this 3rd year Michael McGuire coached team that you 3amt more of?

We’ve sacked previous coaches for less. Granted Potter was not re-signed, but he was effectively sacked. I get you can’t chop and change every 5 minutes, and the problems do run deeper than the coach, but the downward trajectory we’ve been on every year is unacceptable and there are no signs it’s going go anyway but further down in 2022.

I think the real value of the review will be how the team performs in 2022, whoever the coach is.

I think a lot of people have pointed out, there’s not many coaches in the world that would increase the ability of this squad. Next year we just need to hang tough and show all the big names off contract in 2023 that we actually have a plan going forward. Next year will be another down year, will be wishing for 13th.

"I watched that documentary they've done and I see Michael Maguire and his frustration, yelling at the players. That's not the job of a coach, that's the job of the senior players," Johns said.

"Whether it's one or two or three of your senior players demanding better from their teammates and younger players, and saying to them 'get on my back'. Whether I'm going out and going to have a big defensive game or if I'm a halfback I'm going to kick you to victory. It's got to come from the players. It can't come from the coach because the coach isn't out there." - Andrew Johns
Says it all really- and a view shared by just about every player who knows what it takes.

Yeah but it’s a never ending cycle. Players don’t stay long enough and develop into leaders elsewhere, we continue to play poor so we can’t recruit so therefore can’t get in leaders. Missing out on finucane was absolutely ridiculous in hindsight, even if he only played for us for 2 years, the standards he would’ve set for those 2 years could’ve shaped us. Look how Stef came back from origin camp and who’s the first name he brought up

It's easy to blame the coach, how about the players, lack luster board , ceo and micky mouse gm of football. # useless # issues run deeper

Sadly the most eager bloke in our sheds is Madge, you just know he’d be keen as mustard to run out onto the field and rip in. But he is not the one that is supposed to feel that way.
I wonder if it stems from the fact that his playing career was very short. Definitely hasn’t lost the competitive spirit but if we do keep him on I hope someone tells him to take a seat, deep breath before he address the team.
From the outside in everyone sees a playing group that are disinterested. But in reality the mix of cultures and personalities create that, everyone has their own game day routine, when I played in my local comp you witness it, guys screaming, some guys pensive, some passive, some boys had music, some told jokes, me I didn’t enjoy that part of the lead up, I’d try and avoid the dressing sheds to the very last minute, I just wanted to kick the ball around and run around beforehand for as long as I could coz mentally I couldn’t cope with going through the process of getting ready. I always wanted to go from rocking up (kitted up ready to go) ball drills and playing, the inbetween stuff would kill me and wouldn’t spend much time in the sheds at all. I get those sort of things are more controlled for a professional team but there’s a good chance individually each player has their own style and their own preference of approach.
I should add, the combinations with in the team, the squad etc being quite new in comparison to other teams probably made this all the more difficult and until that bond sticks it’s going to remain that way.

Johns is right. That’s why a player like Finucane was so important for us.

Bag Tamou all you like, but he can’t lead all by himself. We should have 5-6 players on the field with 150+ experience helping Madge.

Won’t matter who is coach without that.

The article says “Something has to give at Concord and there only seems to be two viable options ahead; send Maguire packing or undertake a complete roster overhaul.”

How do you overhaul the roster when the coach can’t attract players?
