Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

Madge is gonna pick Brooks and Nofa every single week next season.... he'll be too scared to pick any rookies or take any chances because his job is under threat

Same plodders will be picked every week and we aren't signing any good players because why would you join a team who's coach is under massive pressure to keep his job?

We were more of a chance of signing good players with a new coach IMO. Happy to be proven wrong with all of this but next season is going to be one of the worst in our history

Also it's hilarious that they keep Madge but they have to have him babysat by Sheens all season and he can't pick his own coaching staff. They can't have THAT much faith in him if they're doing that, they kept him purely to save face

Been glued to this thread for 24hrs and look away then wow…not sure what to think after the buildup.

Just so we are all clear though - the "build up" is 100% media driven and not driven by Wests Tigers. Tigers didn't officially announce the review, it was leaked to the media. It's normal to review operations after a badly failed season, and naturally for the 3-year coach, his ongoing involvement would be part of that review.

However 100% of the content between the public becoming aware of the review, and the outcome of the review, is pure media-driven circus of speculation, with a significant number of commentators and typically none of them got the story right.

When we all take a step back from the hysteria, the club conducted an internal review, the Board were made recommendations and their ultimate decision was to retain Madge. It would not be weird for some of the Board members to have been in favour of sacking Madge - same as some fans were. The players don't even come back to training for 6 weeks, there's no time lost.

I agree with your post. I guess my perspective is that the build up was more the differences of opinion within the forum going around in circles (years in the making) coming to a head because there was an opportunity to “change direction”. Personally I’ve always thought that the best long term strategy was to stick with Madge. Unfortunately the differences of opinion on here will continue to boil over until we start winning. Even then it probably won’t be enough.

I am not entirely convinced that Madge hasn't just been given a stay of execution. If we aren't better than 50% after Round 5 next year he'll be gone.

So just sack him now ?! God this is so brainless it’s infuriating. We’re not going to be able to sign any players for 2022 let alone 2023 when we can’t guarantee the coaches safety

Maguire is not the reason for players not coming here. The problem is much higher up in the organisation. You’ve just witness the debacle that is the Board. Therein lies the problem.

If you boil everything down to actual facts and confirmed, the board has been very professional post season. They have done everything correctly post season.

Depends were the leaks came from or if the jurnos are just making it up. The Board can fight all the like in the Board Room, but outside there they need to present a united front. Several sources have told me they were split down the middle. Nobody but the Board should know that.

Not actually a new process for old time Wests Magpies fans - there were several coaches in the 1980s:

Roy Masters 80 (semis)-81
Terry Fearnley 82 (semis)
Len Stacker 83 (last)
Ken Gentle 84 (last)-85
Steve Ghosn 86-87 (last)
Laurie Freier/John Bailey 88 (last)
John Bailey 89

Spent an afternoon and late into the night at a WT grand final luncheon with Steve Ghosn that ended up involving Benny, Sirro and Scotty Gale. Great night and Ghosn is a great bloke.

I will now support him as I want what's best for the team but I am disappointed.

I can’t share the same view. After almost 40 years I’m done with the club.

I am with u, been a supporter for over forty years and after this weak call by the board and upper management, I am done! Average of 30 against, boring in attack and progressively getting worse every year, pathetic use of the bench, yeah keep that guy. Supported the magpies when they won, spoon after spoon but at least they had a go, Maguire can’t make them go that.
I follow the forum too much, and hang off every signing, got Foxtel when I can’t afford it, because of the tigers.
I will drop Foxtel for the first time since they started, won’t follow the forum, and won’t go to any games until this coach is removed.
Thanks guys I wish I could say it’s been fun... for

Seems simple and straightforward doesn’t it? Doesn’t feed the hysteria though.

This is a terrific outcome. In the spirit of healing as @pawsandclaws1 suggested, i will recommit my membership dollars for another year. Well done to other members who, I know, also contacted the Club and left them in no doubt about where we see the real issues of the Club reside and how it impacts on team performance.

While some of that can fairly be sheeted home to Maguire, I hope the review has also put others like CEO/Chair/Board that they are also on notice as to their role in how the Club improves its profile and perfomance.

I know I will continue to make my thoughts known to them.

Thanks TT. At first I was a little disappointed but after further consideration having to report to the Coaching Director, Tim Sheens, and having two handpicked assistant coaches not appointed by him is not dissimilar to walking away with a mild gelding. The sting in the tail.

Ha Ha . "Mild gelding" - Is that a one off?

I too cannot believe we have continued with Madge , and my only concern with keeping him , is the teams terrible defensive efforts over the last 3 years it just continues to get worse, as does our attacking efforts they to have gone to pot . So we wait to next year so we can get the wooden spoon because that’s were we are headed .

The board and club have a fail safe .. Tim Sheens moves straight in if there are problems next season !

The Board and the Club (Pascoe and Lee) ARE the problem. I only hope Sheens lets them know that better than Maguire has.

John Morris and Shane Flanagan as handpicked assisants!

Annual reviews are fine but there was no need to announce it IF it was a regular annual review. I think you’d know that certain sources within Wests Tigers have been leaking information to certain journalists for years to suit whatever agenda they have. They should be accountable

Great news, Board shows some backbone! Great that the changes will include giving Madge the assistant coaching support he needs. We're in it for the long term not the short term.

And once again the journos get it wrong!

Yet their your mates picks for assistant coaches, or is that Pascoe fault as well????

Spend the Packer/mbye money on plugging our edges . Say sayonara to Garner and Luci while we’re at it. There’s your defense fixed.
