Score flattered us, but for 65 minutes we were up by 6 against the panthers 2nd grade side.

Conceded 2 tries against a 12 man Warriors side.

There is some cool-aid being drunk and there will be a rude awakening.

I agree. There were some really good performances from our players but it doesn't count until we can do it to the leading teams.

There are no extra points for beating the leading teams. It counted - like every win.

It is a benchmark to measure performance and improvement. Are the improvements against the Panthers real or, were they because we were playing their second string team?

To call them a second string team is pretty silly to be honest. All the blokes starting in that team bar Jennings have been in their first grade team wether it be starting or on the bench, all year. Not to mention we literally invited them to into the game 10 times in the first half and they still couldn’t capitalise. Improvements are real

They had what 8 players out? Any objective rugby league supporter would consider it a second string team.

C'mon you know they performed well. If you couldn't see it you were not looking. Consistency is the challenge just like it has been for all the other teams that are currently around the same amount of wins - and is the challenge for all coaches with squads who don't have the quality of players that the leading teams have - just like Ivan didn't have at his disposal on Friday night.

To this point, we have Parramatta, Melbourne and South’s in the next 3 rounds.

All will be at near full strength barring injury or suspension. I don’t think we benefit from any outs due to rep selections in those games unless teams decide to rest players.

If we can put 3 competitive performances together in these rounds, or even jag a win, I reckon there’s a chance of scraping into the 8 this year.

The back half of the season is pretty favourable for us and we play a lot of teams battling for the 8.

Looks like 24 or 26 will be the cut off.

It's a fact that it's a second-string team, by definition of being selected with a host of players out. Question is whether a second-string Panthers is still a good side or not.

Whichever way you dice it, only three sides have managed to beat Penrith since the start of 2020 - Parra in Rd 5 2020, Storm in the GF and now us. It is plausible Penrith could have dropped a game last year if Origin had been played mid-year rather than end-year.

Actually they had 14 players on the field at any given time or does that not count?

Yes and they were playing with 14 men - If you didn't notice, Atkins was the 14th.

Aren't we getting into semantics? I'm glad we won and more importantly that many of our players did well. But let's not fool ourselves, the real test comes when we play the Panthers at full strength at Penrith.

just the 4 reserves were not regular 1st graders. The starting side was pretty strong, or should have been

Maguire needs to have a lot more faith in his full squad.

His uncertainty is costing us.

Its not good enough to hold back the bench because you are worried it might disrupt the defensive structure.

The bench isnt for injuries its for impact. All top teams use and trust their bench.

Blore and Amone will really come on in the back half of this season if given a chance.

I think we need to trust Madge's decisions, we don't know what is happening around the team at any one time?

I trust my own eyes. He is holding his bench too long.

No offence mate, but I think he has a better handle on than you or any of us.

Yes just like Warren Ryan did back in 89. coaches make mistakes.

No offence.

Now you know more than Warren Ryan. That makes you the greatest!

Coaches make mistakes fans are allowed an opinion.

No need for that rubbish.

Okay, the team has definitely improved.

Who would you give the 3,2,1 points to? I'm going:

3 Brooks. I've been a critic for a while but I'm onside now. His kicking has improved immensely and his defence, which was never in question, is even better.

2 Garner. Has toughened right up and rarely misses, runs hard and goes the big minutes.

1 Mbye. Has really settled the attack and also defends well.
