Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

Easy to see his plan is to build the club to maintain long term success with quality young players.
I can see the flaws in Madge but still think, with a few good senior players, he can get the place moving.
His biggest problem has been to keep faith with some players who just don't deliver on a regular basis.
Brooks, Mbye, Nofo, Talau and Liddle are amongst that group but we're caught out without the talent to replace them.
His use of the bench brings up other questions.
After watching the documentary debacle the last few weeks it reinforces we have some blokes just there for a paycheque and other, seemingly pretty dumb blokes, who either can't buy in to the team or don't want to.

This is all flogging a dead horse, but there is absolutely nothing to gain by sacking Madge other than making the head coaching role here even less enticing for another coach.

It looks bad enough when last years coach of the year walked out on the club, and if you add ESL and NRL premiership winner can't even get them in the finals and is subsequently sacked. How bad does that look?

2022 and 2023 will be the first time we've actually had cap space for a long time. The only option is to hope Madge and Hartigan's plans for the roster come off. We've got Sheens coming, hopefully we can sign a decent assistant to help Madge.

Mate if we had just two quality top notch players this team could be top five, even better. Sadly that is not the case and is highly unlikely to be the case in the near future.
I am in two minds re Madge as I am not sure anyone else could do much better with a terrible backrow ,terrible centre’s,
and a ineffective 9 7 and 6 combo. In saying that they have been together as a unit since last November and look like they came together yesterday and that must be a reflection of the coach.

Not the end of the world if Madge is still with us next year, but a serious review is required with sweeping changes in the football department is required

1. Sack Maguire

For who?

Separate issues. Maguire's sacking is not dependent upon a replacement.

As is often said, "better the devil you know".

To sack Maguire without a continuity plan, without some confidence of a replacement - that's mismanagement. One of your least sensible suggestions.

Multi national companies and Federal/State Department change CEOs and Directors routinely. Changing a football coach cannot be too difficult

And you conveniently forget we have Sheens and Hartigan to provide continuity.

You show me a big company that changes the CEO, except for unlawful activity, without having the replacement already lined up. Business suicide and your stocks will tank.

Removing a football coach isn't difficult - just tell him not to come back. Replacing a football coach is very difficult.

I didn't conveniently forget anything. You want a 70 year old ex-coach who hasn't been in the country for several years to caretake for an unspecified time until we replace the head coach? And a football general manager to help him.

I'm sorry it's a dumb suggestion to remove a coach without a proper replacement. By all means, go sign up Ciraldo or someone else (no drug or suspension cheats thanks) and let Madge finish the season, or install a caretaker if Madge quits a la John Morris, but don't just hook him with no proper replacement lined up.

I reckon let Madge finish his contract. I can't see how changing the coach changes anything especially long term. We need better players.

If we had better players I'd be stating get rid of him because we haven't seen any games won via tactics or anything like that.

It's not like I think Madge is that good. I just think let him see out his contract and work through our options at that point in time. I think that gives us more time to assess the situation including other coaching options.

The only way I see us improving is getting guys like Luc, Stef, Blore, Laurie and AD here and just doing this over and over again until we somehow develop a good squad.

Where did I write I expected Sheens to be coach or a caretaker?

Appointing a younger coach like Morris with Sheens to provide guidance is a reasonable outcome. It cannot be any worse than the banquet of bullshit that is being produced currently.

I did also mention appointing a caretaker coach whilst a robust recruitment process identifies a replacement. That can occur this year whilst a caretaker coach restores confidence in the playing group.

Agree 100% with all of this and I would add that a bigger problem that the Tigers face right now, even bigger than Madge is difficulting in signing players. I acknowledge that some will say that Madge is part of the reason but if we sack ANOTHER coach, part way through a rebuild, we will be seen as a bigger basket case and we have zero chance of attracting players. At least now we have a narrative of we have a plan and are rebuilding and want you to come and be a part of it.

Of course it is, if we sack him we need to make sure we have a plan to ensure we improve.

Whilst I would normally agree, but we are regressing in every facet of the game, so I would argue any coach would give us an improvement

I don't agree with that. We need to ensure the move we make gives us a very strong chance of success. 10 years without finals is enough.

Madge can't attract better players, or any decent players, he has a reputation and that is where we are at, and he can't coach the ones he has signed.
It makes no sense to keep going with the same players on the same trajectory Madge has us on, it will be harder to dig ourselves out of the hole after another season of getting worse

We can't move on the entire roster bar a few we want to keep. Half of them are contracted until 2023 and beyond. We have to make do with what we have and we have to have a coach that can adapt to the squad we have, however repulsive they may be.

Cleary changed that perspective to me. I reckon Cleary can coach. I reckon he has a tonne of upside. I also think long term he killed us.

I'm not sold on Madge but those signings that have been so bad have gone away. I mean Nofo, Musgrove and Tamou are our bad signings. I think every club would have signings much worse than those guys.

I agree with this. If we were playing well but losing like we did against Souths it's not that bad. The win against the Dogs was terrible.
