What sticks out clearly is a lack of our club looking at character of players in recruitment. This is the most subdued team for a coach that is fire and brimstone.

The club needs to bring in some hard heads that don’t take a backward step. Our lack of line speed and aggression makes sense to me now. These players look like gold blokes we need some real aggressive players that want to hurt people.

Perhaps there is a smarter way than fire and brimstone.

Perhaps however do you think the coach would blast them if they were playing at full intensity. The Tommy match was a disgrace.

I recall Maguire standing pre-game in the dressing room gesticulating and obviously in an aggressive mood with a team of disengaged players. It is difficult not to compare this to the laid back approach of Cleary where he is sitting speaking with his players, not talking down to them. Cleary's players respond and are engaged in what he has to say. I know which approach I prefer.

Bellamy, Hasler, Stuart are cut from the same cloth. The TV show is not going to spend time on Madge talking strategy to players it will highlight the made for tv moments. It’s not unusual in fact they are worse.

I don't necessarily see it that way. Don't get me wrong, Bellamy, Hasler and Stuart all have massive sprays in them, but it's just one tool they use in a pretty big arsenal. Most of the time they're blowing up in the coaches box, not directly at the players. The sprays at the team are few and far between, maybe once or twice a season?

Madge on the other hand only appears to have that tool in his arsenal. If things are going well, yell, if they're going bad, yell louder, if they keep getting worse, scream. If you're an adult why would you want to listen to that week in and week out? Talk about exhausting.

I'm sorry, how can you claim to know what tools Bellamy and Hasler and Stuart use to motivate their players? From what, the pre-game tidbits of footage? You can't even go close to claiming you know what those coaches are really doing to prepare those sides.

I would put it to you that we also don't typically get footage of Madge's sprays - I'm only aware of a handful ever being filmed outside of the documentary.

Des Hasler ripped a door off its hinges once. Bellyache has been filmed smashing drink bottles and hammering on glass. And you reckon the person who does that, that type of person, only has one or two sprays a season?

I'd put it to you that Maguire has a serious communication issue with the playing group. Clearly, they are disengaged when he is speaking.

I don't think I've heard any player say anything like that about Madge?

Compared to what I have saw behind the scenes from ivan Cleary, Madge is miles ahead.

So why can't we make the top 8?

I think it's simple, we don't have a roster that's mentally strong enough to play at top 8 quality footy for consistent enough periods. No other coach will change that.

It's important that we stick with Madge for a few more seasons, it does look like he's building a winning culture.

What is your reasoning to say he’s building a winning culture?

Madge needs to be given the time to straighten the place out. Players will come and go for this to happen.
I've not heard anyone say they are happy with our results, but many (including Madge) believe the current squad is just not up to it. All clubs continually review there rosters.

There is no justification to keep a non performing coach because you are scared of failure, we are failing, and failing harder each year he has been here, that is all you need to say see you later mate

You would, but obviously the club doesn't, do you seriously believe junior coaches will attract quality where Madge couldn't? Do you seriously believe the players are performing as FG players?
The club, rightly so, is playing the long game and believe Madge is the answer, just because you can't see it, isn't the clubs fault.
BTW, we only have to be above 11th to improve on last season, currently that is not impossible?

this was discussed pretty well on 360 last night Sampson/Read/Blocker and scum Elias. The best coaches use break out groups why blocker didn't listen at half time and why the Wests Tigers/Maguire cant do that.

Shame on these talking heads trying to tell an experienced pro how to do his job, based on 2 hours of dramatic TV footage.

Cleary is like a cardboard cut out and is about as exciting as one. He achieved nothing at this club and left it in a mess and walked into a system completely set up for him with a talent pool unmatched to any in the competition.

Cleary has the charisma to keep his players and audience engaged. His results at Penrith confirm that fact. Maguire's approach, described as fire and brimstone, would wear thin quickly, This would be amplified if his audience have doubts about his message.

If as a professional sportsperson, (footballer or otherwise) you require a pre game, halftime or full time speech to be delivered in a particular manner that suits your preferred method of engagement, then perhaps you have issues with motivation and a severe lack of professionalism. You are paid to be play sport. Take pride in your performance and be driven to succeed without the need for hand holding, bum slapping, hug, kisses or verbal sprays.

There was a guy I played with who was a leader of the team and he would crack little one liners under his breath and try to get a laugh out of blokes while the coach was delivering his big pre game or half time sermon. He would then go out and win players player most weeks. We all loved coach including him. It just wasn’t about what the coach says in those few moments before running out. Very few players would be listening.

The problem I see in the doco is a lack of passion/hunger which is pretty obvious in performance.

Cleary's blokes are engaged, while our blokes are wondering if they will still get paid on time and don't seem to have any interest in the game, no wonder he gets up them?
Madge come from the Bellamy school and he is supposedly very similar to him, even though his team is the most successful club of recent times, he is seen to rant and rave?

Cleary was on the news last night being interviewed. It was noticeable he had his audience, the press, engaged. Although I didn't enjoy how he departed WTs, it is difficult not to realise Cleary can keep his audience engaged.

You'll have to remind me of the year Cleary's approach got Wests Tigers to the finals.
