You wish....

Needs to be said, (may have been already) but Ken Mamaulo has been a fantastic signing by the club.
Seems to have solved at least one of our defensive holes and he has been getting more comfortable every week.
One would think the WTs were attractive to him because of his previous relationship with Madge.
Hope he continues to get back to his destructive best.

The big thing I found with this interview was how level headed Madge is and how positive he is about the club...he also spoke honestly and openly about purchasing players and the cap....
The best part was how he speaks highly of the players and is determined that this group of young players will develop into NRL superstars....
And thats what we all want, young guys developing and becoming a real competition threat....it starts from within....great interview...

It was a great interview, and very fair considering the hammering the club has received recently, Also interesting to hear they agreed to the doco, cos they are proud of what they are building and want people to know about it - so some 'branding', that might go against the perception that the club stands for nothing. Whether or not its successful, who knows. Also to find out that the players have their own groups, in which they discuss the team etc (which we don't see).

I thought he sounded very impressive.

I'm interested that a number of fans seem embarrassed by the documentary, but the club and Madge himself say they are fine with it.

I think that is because expectations were much higher in regards to what was going to be put out there. More than just Madge, that’s mostly what it seems to be at the moment. Obviously but, for reasons not everything can be put in there and it is also how fox think they can get the most views.

Classy mate, real classy, I listened to that, he made some valid points, but in the end he lied, he said he had no money for players, yet he was willing to pay Latrell over a million, JAC $600+, TPJ $700, Finucane $600+, there are more examples.
He is just making excuses for missing out on players, the salary cap is not why he didn't land those players, if he thinks that, he needs punting today because he is delusional, which I think he may be.
If he was any good he would have the players aiming up each week, there have been far to many games this year the players never turned up, that is on the coach, 12 or 14 players all don't have an off day the same time about 5 times this year.
His coaching style, or lack of has bugger all players buying in, now you are saying we move on 12 players in this one off season to appease an out of touch coach, who is going to replace them, Madge couldn't attract a fly to to a turd in regards to top line players

I agree they are good players, but were not highly sought after, every time another club enters the market for a player we want, we miss out, we can't keep going like that.

Doueihi knock back the Rorters..

He wasn't going to get a fullback or five eight role there, he wasn't even a lock for first grade

Madge mentions the club wants to focus on building around the likes of Blore, Utoikamanu, Laurie, Doueihi, Simpkins, Talau, Tuilagi etc and wants to ensure if they test on the open market that the right player is brought in to complement the young core.

From good young juniors and we have a crop of outstanding players coming through and starting their careers. **Madge reveals four-year plan and SEVEN players to take Tigers to ‘another level’**
https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/nrl-2021-wests-tigers-michael-maguire-transfers-recruitment-finals-coaching-adam-doueihi-luke-brooks/news-story/ac5a8abdecb0bdce975e7c1242710294

Forget questions over Michael Maguire’s immediate future, the Wests Tigers coach has a long-term plan to build sustained success at the NRL’s perennial underachievers.

Two-straight wins over the Bulldogs and Cowboys have the Tigers right back in the frame for a top-eight finish - a feat the club has not achieved since 2011.

Maguire took over at the Tigers in 2019 and inherited an underperforming roster and out-of-shape salary cap.

Over two years laterhe is finally building the roster he wants and starting to get the salary cap in a strong enough position to land marquee signings.

**MAGUIRE HITS BACK AT RECRUITMENT ‘POTSHOTS’**
The Tigers have long been criticised for their inability to attract big-name players but Maguire said on Sunday there is a reason for all of it.

“What we have done at our club is we have taken the long-term view,” he told Triple M on Sunday afternoon.

“You can blow your salary cap, I’ve been through it for the last two to three years. Once you do it your club is in a really tough position.

“We’ve gone to youth and young development players coming through and over a period of time those young men will be what I would like to think [are] the next superstars of our competition.”

Maguire said “it is easy” for critics to take potshots at the Tigers for their failed bids to lure those ‘superstar’ names without considering the context.

“At this current moment no-one is leaving the Storm, no-one is leaving the Roosters, no-one is leaving Penrith because they want to stay at that club,” he added.

The Storm may be losing Nicho Hynes and Dale Finucane while Penrith have let Matt Burton leave for the Bulldogs but that is not Maguire’s point.

Instead, he argued the majority are happy to stay put for the on-field success even if it means sacrificing money and that has a direct impact on a club like the Tigers.

“To be able to grab one of those players you have to spend overs, which can then completely disjoint your salary cap,” he said.

The Tigers are getting close to fixing their own salary cap issues.

Moses Mbye sought permission to negotiate with rival clubs earlier this season after admitting the club was not getting value for money out of him.

Meanwhile, Russell Packer and James Roberts are two other Tigers recruits unlikely to be offered a new deal at the end of this season.

Most recently the Tigers were linked to Dale Finucane and Tevita Pangai Jr but did not end up signing either, with the duo instead heading to Cronulla and Canterbury respectively.

Maguire admitted the club will have to go to the market for a “strong marquee player” at some point but said the timing was not right.

“The key to that is there is not many out there and over the last couple of years we haven’t been able to be in a position to go out hard like that,” he said.

“We are moving into that situation where the salary cap is way better balanced. For us we are being patient and at the right time we will find that but along the way we are building strong foundations with these players coming through.

“Whoever that may be will come into a strong squad.”

**THE SEVEN PLAYERS AT CORE OF MAGUIRE’S VISION**
Maguire already has an idea of what that “strong squad” will look like too.

While there has been heavy criticism of the club’s recruitment and retention in recent years, the Tigers do have to be commended for shrewd signings this year. Specifically, Daine Laurie, Stefano Utoikamanu and Shawn Blore were all highly-rated prospects at Penrith and Parramatta but the Tigers saw the potential in all three.

That trio along with four others will all be part of Maguire’s plans moving forward.

“We’re planned for the next two, three, four years,” Maguire said.

“If I can keep Shawn Blore, Daine Laurie, Stefano [Utoikamanu], Kelma [Tuilagi] has shown some good form, Tommy Talau, Tuki Simpkins even Adam Doueihi.

“Holding that group together builds cohesion and then to be able to bring top-end talent around that is going to take us to another level.”

Maguire confirmed the club is “looking at” possible new recruits currently, emphasising the need for players who can handle the big moments.

“The Wests Tigers are looking at the longer-term building so that when you do have success you can actually get there and make sure once you actually arrive at the top end of the competition, you’ve got the players that can win you the comp,” he said.

“What I mean by that is you have guys that have Origin and International experience. Once you jump into that top end, you’ve got to have players that can step up.

“Semi-finals are a different game, grand finals are a different game. You’ve got to find those players that can handle that. We’re identifying those players we believe can step up once you get into that space.”

“If someone like the Tigers wanted a player like Gutherson, and I think he’d be great for the Tigers, he’s worth whatever they’re willing to pay him.” “He’s very fit, he works hard, he seems like a very good leader, he’s the captain of Parramatta, he could bring a lot to a club that’s looking for a leader,” he said.
With Laurie and Doueihi both viewed as long-term options at fullback and five-eighth respectively it leaves centre as the only open spot for Gutherson.

Interesting we are looking for new talent that can handle the big moments but it’s not the right time to sign a strong marquee player. I understand and agree there are not many out there. I guess this means we are looking for solid first graders that are not super stars but know how to lead and control a game and can tackle. I look forward to seeing who those players are and hope we can sign a couple for next year.

I look in the mirror and see a guy that started supporting one leg of this footy team when I was six years younger than you and my oldest memory is of the 69 grand final day, but I don't remember the match at all, rather the celebrations around the TV.

Don't mind HG and Roy, and think the club is placing better people in the expanding positions, just don't believe that Maguire is the coach to take us where we need to go. Unsure about the training and some other off field stuff, plus willing to give him a go, but he has had that already for mine and would need a lot to change my mind.

Maybe it is just conformation bias, but I have long voiced my concerns over McGuire's handling of game day and particularly reports from the sheds of words and/or actions. At times I wrote of such during the live game threads and whilst only a snapshot, the documentary doesn’t allay my concerns. Let's see if there is anything to shed some better light on him tonight.

FG ,I have been a Balmain Tiger boy all my life now Im a West Tigers member and fanatic...I may be slightly older than you and remember the 69 grand final well...just wanted to let you and others know that I had the pleasure of knowing Joe Walsh who played for Balmain in the 69 grand final...A true gentleman and great person to be associated with....how do I know him you might ask,,? he owned a couple of Hotels in Wagga when I played for the great Turvey Park Lions back in the 80s...he and I had to go to AHA meetings ....Australian Hotels Association meetings....If only some of the guys these days knew what it was like back then when you had to have a job as well as play footy....it would be so much different ...

Let’s hope a couple of senior leaders aren’t too far away, I think we just need hard men, not superstars. I think we would be more of an attractive proposition now than we were this time last year.

We are finishing the year strong because we have had a soft draw. Let’s see how we go over the next two weeks, especially the Penrith game. I think the media releases may drop off if we drop the next two games

You would, but obviously the club doesn’t, do you seriously believe junior coaches will attract quality where Madge couldn’t? Do you seriously believe the players are performing as FG players?

Yes I do, Ciraldo and Morris would in my opinion attract players that Madge can't, and the performance of players is again on Madge, he won't drop the non performers, so you just strengthened my argument to punt him

Before blowing wind out of a blowhole, this is a good listen to what Madge and the recruitment team are heading the club into?

851...if Madge turns things around within his tenure and we have a far better culture and we make the finals WITH what we have atm....would you consider that you have been impatient and a bit over the top with your summation of Madge .....

How long do you wait, why can't he attract good players, he has a reputation, rightly or wrongly that is where we are, we need to buy some good players to mix with the young players to get anywhere, and that seems highly unlikely whilst he is coach

AD ,ken M are good players....lets see what happens next year...

I agree they are good players, but were not highly sought after, every time another club enters the market for a player we want, we miss out, we can't keep going like that.

I’m pretty doom and gloom about recruitment but I think if we finish the year strong, there are some green shoots starting to appear in AD, DL, Stef, Blore, Simpkin, Tuilagi.

Right? Some fans on here come across like they don't realise that we play well against teams below us or injured and we stink against good opposition. "Finishing well" means nothing if we don't put at least 30 on the dogs and beat the Sharks and Penrith. Other than that, it's the same old news.

Watching the doco, Robbie Farah is amazing.

I feel like he and Brett Kimmorley could be doing so much more for the club. Let em replace those jokers in the box with Madge and give em some hands on role within the playing group and preparation and watch the impact they have.

I'm sure Madge can reach his potential as a coach if he's surrounded by the right people... not the current ones, that is.

Robbie is obviously already heavily involved at training, give him a bit more time in this sort of role but I think I can see him moving into coaching at some point.

He's not in the bubble though, is he? Which is a shame for the team, considering his level of involvement shown in the documentary

We beat both Drags and Knights, who were above us and still are?
