@marzie said:Wonder when this will be confirmed by the club? Would be nice to see important announcements made by Wests Tigers first for a change instead of the media. Congrats to O'Neill hope he does a good job

@cktiger said:Outside of Tigers eyes he was an average player at best - hopefully (for us) he'll turn out to be a better administrator.

Wayne Bennett and Craig Bellamy were average players at best too.

Wayne Bennett and Craig Bellamy were average players at best too.
Wayne Bennett got picked in the 1972 World Cup squad and played 7 games for Qld
Yes he was slower than Luke Covell as a winger , but a lot of very good players never got picked for an Australian squad

Still haven't answered my question from earlier in this thread. So assume you're just relying on rumours. Pretty poor form, if so.

On the match review committee…. so what?
I don't know the guy - and no one has mentioned any credentials he may have for the job apart from being a nice guy and former player.
Seriously hope he has the skills for the position and not just given the job because of the connection with the team.

Could not agree more.
Is it official, or another "maybe it will be O'Neill?"

O'Neill is well respected in the Rugby League community..has served on the NRL match review committee since 2008 and turn down the head role to join us…
He has been employed in the position to manage the football department lets give the bloke a chance...before the naysayers drag him down...
I'm sure Buckets is well respected in the Rugby League community
I still doubt he was the best applicant , can just imagine the interview process
Brought in his DVD of the 2005 GF no doubt , a few hugs and cuddles later , hey presto
For someone 'Over" 2005..you sure do mention it a lot…
Look it works for everyone else , might land me a job
Just because your a great clubman , doesn't necessarily mean you will be a good administrator
And when you still have ties to certain people whether it players or administration, it just complicates everything and muddies the waters
So if an issue came up with Dene Halatau or Robbie or MacDonnell or any others pre 2005 links , can we trust that he can use perspective in making any decisions or will his "brotherhood" still rule his decisions ??
@Balmain Boy said:While Mark doesn't have first hand experience in managing a club, he has experience working in the NRL and handling matters involving all the clubs you'd imagine. So he'd be somewhat aware how things work at the top. The very top GMs would demand a motza, which we don't have so yes we'd probably need to be shopping in the mid-lower end of the market.
He's run a business, he's worked in management in the NRL for a number of years, he played for over 10 years in the NRL/ARL. He may well have ticked the most boxes out of the other realistic applicants.
One of the other names mentioned was Stuart Raper. Would he have been better? I don't think so. He's been out of the game for a fair while and spent a lot of his time coaching in England.
The fact Buckets is a club legend only helps things. Think, if someone had to deliver some bad news to someone such as Robbie, i'd trust Buckets to deliver it more than Pascoe, Taylor, Go etc. I think he'd be able to connect with the players more than anyone else with the club, put things in language they understand without causing dramas, and he's also a highly professional person in everything he does. There would be no way he would undermine his role simply to make an old mate happy. I doubt Robbie and Buckets would hav been best mates anyway given their age difference when they played together.
All sports GMs need to get a first gig at some point. Richardson, Greenberg, everyone needs to start somewhere. Who knows, buckets could be running the NRL in 20 years time!
I wish him well and have the utmost confidence in the board that he wasn't simply selected because he used to play for us. If it were just the Balmain + Wests board members i may have had some doubts, but not in the current set-up.

What am I saying, could you imagine that lot in charge of this fine club....it would be back to the days of public hangings if things didn't go their way....hahaha..
