Marshall opens up, money, his relationship with Wests Tigers

If he played like he wanted to be here the last few years I might have some sympathy for him. Bu he was soooo disinterested I think he could owe us some money.

Im sure none of us here know the true story behind both stories, but i do know its a terrible look for the club and does us no favours

I've also been around long enough to know that not everything is black and not everything is white either.

I don't think we are much different to any of the other NRL sides tbh. Some are more profitable than we are but they still have their "demons"

Only difference is 15 other clubs haven't had two ex player complaining they haven't been paid in the last few weeks

Marshall conceded: “In order for me to play last year (at the Dragons) I had to forfeit money that I was owed from (the Tigers)”.

That's just standard contract procedure, not money you were owed. Why would we be paying you to play for Saints?

@innsaneink said:
“I never really had the people around me (at the Tigers) telling the truth about what was actually happening.
“I was just comfortable thinking ‘I’m going all right’ and wondering why people were saying ‘he is looking slow, he’s looking overweight’. This is people on the outside and people on the inside weren’t telling me things and I needed to hear it.”

If you get dropped from the starting side and can't get the hint, you're not real smart.

Wests Tigers are not like other clubs. If they can get out of paying a player what he is entitled to they will.
Anasta and Marshall have now come out and given some indication of how things are done at Wests Tigers.
Players contracts are not being honoured. There is always an excuse. That's not our understanding, We didn't know, First I heard, Blah Blah Blah
It happened when Humphreys was in charge now Mayer is in charge it still goes on.

What a tool. My respect for Benji is slowly diminishing. The bloke needs to shut up and stop crying like a baby.

It is the height of hypocrisy…really.
He was playing that badly...he had the kicking duties removed, passes still into Row C. ....he knew how crap it all was, no one needed to tell him unless he was highly delusional

I find the timing of this article a bit strange. :unamused:

With the incident that happened this week in Martin Place and the loss of life, and all others involved, no doubt scarred forever, this article from Benji is printed.

Learn and grow, move on, Benji, we have.
No use dwelling on the past, because that's what it is, PAST
I have no doubt that all of us, have a similar story/experience.
We just get on with life, and try to ensure it's not repeated. :bulb:

I can see in years to come that Benji will be the ex-player that the media go to, for a comment about anything to do with wests-tigers..

Let's be fair. I believe that he is telling the truth and I'm O.K. with that.

Whats he ….and Anasta ...got to gain by lying about being owed money.

People need to take off the goggles

True Ink

But why dance around it ??

Anasta at least had a big enough set and came out and said he was owed money
The money that Anasta was owed was a TPA nothing to do with the west tigers,
who cares about what Benji says yesterday news.

Come out , be honest and totally up front and lets get to the bottom of it , pay players if they were owed money and start afresh

Haha yeah he'll be Mr Rent-a-Quote ala Tommy/Benny

but in order for me to play last year (at the Dragons) I had to forfeit money that I was owed from them.

Right and you knew that when you left for Union, since you couldn't cut it there you came back knowing full well that you would forfeit money as you were contracted to play for the Tigers…..........

So why even mention it now? hoping that people will skip over that part??

The way he has behaved, quite frankly, has really lessened my opinion of him......as well as him admitting he basically dogged it the last couple of years for us.

Instead of walking away from the club with some modicum of decorum, you continue to tarnish whatever good rep you had left at the club.

This guy does more damage to himself than anyone else.

Okay so to summarise:
- Benji didn't get told the truth about his form etc when here (Maybe he didn't want to hear it IMO)
- It does sound like the club promised, hinted, or suggested his pay cuts would be added to later payments… if this wasn't iron-clad sounds like Benji was bit naïve there. And his manager maybe let him down too.
- Benji had to forego any promised monies or payments to play for another NRL club. Yep, guess you signed that one Benji so no surprise?

If the club owes him or anyone else money they should pay. If there is a dispute I can understand them not wanting to play it out in the media. But where is Tauber in all of this? Or Anasta's manager? Wouldn't they be screaming up a storm if something was untoward??

Benji will always find himself in the papers, but I can't see enough in this to hate the guy. But I did get sick and tired of seeing these fluff pieces about him going to be better etc etc year after year.

I still like to see him do well actually, guess I'm just a Benji fan too.

I always find it interesting Marshal forgets the years the club carried him throw injury when he should of been shown the door and paid him handsomely ,personally I think it is poor form that he has anything to say .The only people that were short changed was the club and supporters for the garbage that Marshall dished up for the last couple of years!
If he was going to write an article about losing money on deals maybe he should of written it about his manager.

He thinks he might be owed money. :roll

Please give me a break. There are plenty of legal remedies for Benji if he has been legitimately ripped off.

Based of form over their last two years both Benji(hell he says he was unfit and unmotivated every second interview) and Anasta owe the Tigers a lot of money :brick:

Just can't see the malicious intent increasingly attributed to Benji.

Many a fault for sure.

A crap end to his time with the Tigers for sure.

But intent to harm the reputation of the club I just can't see.

The fan base he brought to the club was priceless. Maybe he rested on his laurels in that regard. But many a player would have held the club to ransom financially over what he once offered, and few would have taken paycuts in his position.

But hey there's a good chance I'm wrong. Even then though I don't get the hate when the guys downplaying insinuations about being rorted by the club.

The media must also be sick of the fortnightly "I need to improve my game" tirade and pushed him for a different story.

The media is hearing stories from players whom are influential in the media that they were not being paid what they were owed which is furthering the opinion that we are a fiscal basketcase, and Benji is airing dirty laundry long after the horse has bolted. Where were all these claims when he darted off to union?

Both he and the club look bad IMO. Hopefully with this new board they get the financial priorities right. Paying the players might be a start, we might see some consistency on the pitch then.

This is all a load of whinging crap. No one told him his form was declining? Hello? Do you really need to be told not to pass the ball to row 10?

And wasn't part of the deal we made for him to be released that he wouldn't play for another NRL club for the remainder of his contract? Fast forward six months and he comes crawling back. The Tigers were compensated for Benji breaking his contract.

Give it a rest Benji. Stop bagging the club and focus on playing footy!

Spot on alex. I want to know whether the money Benji is talking about was being owed / paid on the condition he remain in rugby.

It would have then become null when he decided to renege on his promise "to never play for another NRL side". Let's not forget that Benji was the one who decided to leave Tigers and then break the arrangement some 8 months later.

People are also thinking about this too loosely, about "gentleman's agreements" or forgetting to put your tax return in. Like Defiant said, if a player is genuinely owed money from a contract, they have a clear legal avenue to recover this. If the contract is nebulous or open to debate, then that is a fault of their manager / lawyer for allowing such vagaries to exist.

The other thing that gets up my nose is the "I don't want to say anything bad, but-" approach that Benji has taken.

If you truly don't want to air grievances, then say no comment. Don't say "yeah I think they owed me money but I don't want to badmouth them". Newsflash - you already have. It's the equivalent of "I am keeping an amazing secret but I can't tell you what it is".

Benji Marshall displayed his character (or lack thereof) when he left the Tigers. This is a Christmas period fill-in article. Ho-Ho-Ho-Humm.
