Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

I hope the Tigers show some BACKBONE for a change and donot allow Taupau to play for any other team before 2017.

Taupau is contracted to the Tigers for 2016…....and he needs to fullfill that commitment. If he does not want to then he can sit the season out on the sidelines IMO.

I am sick and tired of these players coming and going free will whenever they want to, yet the club is forced to honor its commitments to players..... in recent years players such as Moltzen, Terry Hill, etc etc when they contributed virtually nothing to the club in their latter years. Even the Farah situation is a case of paying overs for a player getting into the twilight of his career.....handled poorly by the club acknowledged though.Yet we are forced to honor the contract.

This year we let Blair go to the Bronc's yet paid for most of his salary, let Austin go and previous year let Koro go.....all have had great form since leaving. How can a club make any progress when such stupid decisions are made. Austin alone would have contributed to 3 additional wins this year IMO & 26 points would have made a respectable year.

Understand what you are saying, but it probably would be classed as a transfer fee, and would most likely be an unfair restraint of trade.
Not sure, but it sounds like a transfer fee .to me

Theres probably little doubt that if Farah goes we will probably pay at least half his salary for the next 2 years. No-one does the Tigers any favors.....we shouldn't do anybody any either.

Its time to draw a line in the sand if we are to get better as a club and I hope the WT's show some spine with the Taupau situation.

As a side issue I think players asking to leave mid contract, then the club should get some form of compensation from the club he is going to.......for example if Taupau goes to Manly in 2016...then Manly pay Tigers say $200K.....gives us an opportunity to strengthen our squad and helps our salary cap......just my 2 cents worth.

Yep….and tomorrow when Teddy, Moses & Brooks want to leave we will just say "no problem as long as your happy don't worry about the club"........contracts need to be honored and in situations where a club relents then some form of major compensation should be given to the club.

A football club is a business....not a charity for wayward boys who "have changed their minds".

You can call it a transfer fee if you wish….or a penalty fee or a compensation fee....it does not matter.

You cannot have a restraint of trade if the player is contracted to you but he wants to leave and play for someone else......a contract is a contract.....nobody is talking about a transfer fee if the player is not contracted to you for the following year....he then leaves freely of his own accord.

And I don't see an issue of the fee as the club has the right IMO to say "if we allow you to break the contract that we would like you to honor then this is what we want out of it".....I think its more than fair.

i agree that this is all business but i also agree with #jirskyr - if a player (any club) dosnt want to be their…. you let them go and begin building and preparing the next in line. (as per Bennet with hodges when he signed for roosters)

Why waste resources on someone that has no desire to be at the club.

And, if 5 or 6 players all do the same.... surely someone at the club must ask or look into the reasons behind it.

surely ?

Keeping a player who doesn't want to be here generally doesn't end well. And if Manly wanted him next year they would have to compensate us, not the other way round.

I think theres little doubt that Taupau will eventually leave. Its hard to believe that a dysfunctional club like ours could hold onto the games most damaging forward…....but we do have him signed for 2016 and this is where he should play.......2017 well thats up to him if he wants to leave.

He should see out his contract. Don't really care if he dislikes wests, he's contracted for next season. If he's a child and starts putting in poor performances than he can play with The captain in reserves. I'd imagine he likes playing tests and keeping his image/brand going so he will continue to put in week in week out.

If they let him go before the contract date states that'll do me. If wests management continue to set this precedent, what will stop teddy realizing that the ship is sinking and request a release? Or woods? Loyalty is dead, time to live by what you sign your name too and stop wests being a stop gap until you get something better.

Rant over.

The game's most damaging forward? Are you serious?

I would think "potentially one of" the game's most damaging forwards is a better description of what he offered in 2015.

Oh dear… From Geo wearing ladies blouses and Happy's body heat, it's no wonder Taupau is leaving his fan base?!

Hate to say it but they need a room.

Haha… I can see the old Silverback throwing the fullback around the room like Tallis on Hodgo in SOO.

Thanks for the memories Taupau. Anyone but Manly.

Brings back bad memories when Joe Cool, John Ribot, Les Boyd, Ray Brown left Western Suburbs Magpies and went to the Silvertails. Broke my 13 year old heart at the time.

I honestly dont care if he goes - from a player point of view; if he doesnt want to be here so be it. I do care from the point of view that it just adds to the general aura of demise surrounding the place and the hollowing out of the first grade squad.

And Everett; I am a couple of years older than you, and the first time Wests played Manly after that mass defection I was on the hill at Lidcombe to watch. I saw Wests beat Manly in all 3 grades, as it was in those days, with Manly's 3 teams only scoring one try in total on the day. One of the best days of my football watching career! I am long over the Manly hate, and a great believer in the fact that you cant buy a premiership. Obviously there are exceptions to my great belief!

Agree entirely. You'd think he feels indebted to a club that saved his career by giving him a chance when nobody else would, not to mention bowing to his request of a starting spot when he was much better off the bench.
Throw in that he spent lot of this year on social media saying things like 'believe in the process' or 'we gotta stick together'….obviously all talk.

If he doesn't want to play for us then see ya later, there are plenty of others (like McConnachie and Griffin) that would love a crack at playing NRL for us.

Simple
He's contracted for 2016, he stays
If he wants to leave and If manly want him they pay his full salary for 2016 - we carry none of it
If not and he underperforms for us in 2016 he's in reggies
End of story

Regardless of your thoughts on him being over/underrated or whatever else, it'd be hugely concerning if he truly does want out IMO.
He's got a starting role here, is basically a senior figure in a forward pack full of kids with what we're told are huge futures. I understand there's a financial aspect to the game, but it's not as if Manly are knocking on the door of a premiership any time soon.
I'd certainly hope we got something in return if we did release him early.
