Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

You can't possibly suggest that Taupau is worth 700 k

And he won't prove his worth at Manly either

Nate Myles will prove a far better buy for them

At least someone is talking commonsense on here. The offer the Tigers made(1.1 million for 2 years) was more than fair for a bloke who plays about 40 minutes per week. I wouldn't have bothered trying to match Manly's offer as they really are risking a lot of coin IMO.

For those whinging right now, come back to this thread in 12 months time when the club is looking to lock in the likes of Brooks, Moses and Sirro who will all be circled by other clubs.

Willow the issue most of us see is that he was contracted to us for another year. What possible advantage to the club is there in letting him leave. The suggestion we will have more money for re-signing junior talent by freeing cap space was totally back flipped when they signed Ballin!

I hope your right that clubs will be interested in Brooks, Moses and Sirro but if they play like they did this year i think it will be just us tigers supporters thinking highly of them. I don't think Taupau is worth 700k but with him out of the side do you really think any other teams pack of forwards will be scared of us. We have been lacking aggression for years and our one players who put fear in the opposition has been let go. The TAB doesn't have a market for wooden spoon but we will have to be favourites when they do. As long as the tigers are in the comp i'll be supporting them but currently i think the lunatics are running the asylum.

JT's interview leads me to believe Taupau was already on massive overs for next year with us.
Anybody else sense that?

He definitely wasn't. Its spin yet again. We tried to resign him for another couple of years and we supposedly offered him less than Manly. There is no way he was on top dollars next year.

it was my understanding that he signed with tigers for $400K per season. Dont forget that the Storm made a big play for him before he signed with tigers. If this is accurate, which I believe it is, then Manly are paying him nearly double a year over 4 years. Big cash

I've no issue with not overpaying him in 2017\. Disappointing to see him go, but hopefully he doesn't live up to his price tag for our sake.
But him being released here and now literally has no effect on us retaining Brooks and co in 2017, and JT's talking garbage in saying it does.

Having listened to Taylor's interview we may as well not turn up next year. It's sounds like he's not worried about 2016 and is planning for 2017/18\. Do we really think the tigers players will want to play for a coach who is so negative. We didn't see what he said just as the interview was starting but to have a smile on your face when your announcing you have let a player go astounds me, especially as i've never seen him smile before.

He looked chuffed didn't he. 😕 He said the team will do well in 2016 :unamused:
Have to see it to believe it.

I very much doubt he was on such big money Tigersmurf. Storm might've been interested, but they never offer big money to reserve graders. And that's where Kapow was mainly playing. Reserve grade.

On Fox sports it's mentioned that with Marty allowed out of his last year of his deal, it is also possible that the WT will be contributing a portion of his wage in 2016\. :imp:

Pleased to hear that Geo.

I understand that many feel frustration at losing a high profile player, but what is the club to do? We offered him what I feel was a decent extension, having already given Taupau an upgrade to the contract signed when he came to us as a nobody which was factored into our cap situation that also saw Keefy moved on. It was not enough for him and he wanted to go elsewhere, with strong murmurings emerging early this season, despite him getting the starting spot he wanted and which for mine did not suit him, nor the team.

No sour grapes from me because despite enjoying having him in WT colours, I have always thought and posted on here for what I see him as, a strong running impact middle man with a great right arm fend. Nothing more, nothing less, as I also fail to see the fear or intimidation factor that some seem to think he has, despite not being a big hitter and way behind Sue as far as mongrel and toughness goes.

Will miss him a little, but enjoy watching him play against us next year onwards and think we will have his measure, knowing his mainly one dimensional game fairly well.

Yeah 100% agree. In reality we offered him 550k a year and to be honest thats enough for a 40 minute prop in a shrinking interchange world. Manly offered more and I for one am glad we didn't increase our offer.

Then it became a matter of what to do next year. Personally I would have loved to see him here but in managing a cap then while it may make us slightly worse for 2016 we are really more likely to be competing for a title in 2017/18 so we can frontload some contracts with that money

money will be used to front load farah or lawrence contract in 2016 so we have some kind of fighting fund for 2017\. im not fussed with marty going he has not got the biggest motor and not worth more than 500k. i want to see brooks moses teddy mania woods and ciro secured (potential match winners). if we have to let some go so be it. while we have farah on 950k things will be tight thats the reality of it. hate to think who else goes if farah sees his contract out at the tigers….

Wests tigers made Marty an offer. Manly offered more.
When you take all the emotion away, it simply comes down to " show me the money"
Manly showed more, and his services went to the higher bidder.
We all like loyalty to be shown by players who were given a chance to prove themselves at wests-tigers.
Loyalty doesn't pay your bills, or secure your future financially.

how the hell did manly fit him into there cap with the money DCE is on and the other 5-6 signings they have done, not to mention there backline, THE CAP IS A JOKE.

Easy, they sacked up to 14 of their players.

thats rubbish they are still on there books.

Incredible to think he was only offered $550k for 2017 while Brooks and Moses 2 x reserve graders atm will earn or rather be paid $600k.

What a joke.
None of the young forwards will rise to his level.

Our Club love the word Potential and that is what a lot of them get paid for
