He will be a success story with Manly , just like Austin with Canberra. We have very few players who can break the line and have not made a single signing who can perform Marty's role. He should have been made to play out his contract , plain and simple.
That maybe - Austin didn't play too well against us as I recall.
That is because his one trick - "show and go" didn't work.
As the years go by it will work less and less.
Marty will have a good year with Manly imo but he would not have had it with us.
That's interesting Russell, because I remember after the first game against Canberra last season I said it was the first time since they got rid of him I didn't regret it. I maintain he should've been the starting 6 for 2015 and he had a great season, but after that game I didn't see why you wouldn't just hit him every time regardless?
Also, Moses evolved exponentially this season so I was further placated.
As for the taupau situation, although never a huge Robbie fan, I did like Austin. He was their best player in 2014\. Say what you want about beau Ryan, but he was the best player one season and was gone the next.
Apart from being an incredibly fan friendly asset to any team - hard nuts love him, kids love him, I'm sure women love him! - taupau was not only (imo) the Tigers second best player last season behind Tedesco, but a big part of the club's image.
I for one am having my loyalty tested with his departure. Everything we seem to be getting these days is bad news; how long do we have to go through this?!
Okay, the club was a mess when you guys got here. Salary cap, salary cap, salary cap….
As I said to a colleague the work the other day (re engineering drawings): you only ever see the score - not how it got that way. And that's what people remember and consider.
I remember years ago Carlton had to pay so much money to keep Anthony Koutafidis. He was an awesome player but then was plagued with injury and they had no depth because he was taking so much cap space. And not playing.
What happens if the future they are going all in on doesn't pay off?!
No club in any sport (well, except maybe basketball!) can afford to invest so heavily in so few options.
Now the Tigers have all these money issues and Farah has been deemed such a counter productive influence they have chosen to accept the debt to him and play with a roster that is paid ($900k?) less than every other club. They are in effect saying that without him they will perform so much better on field that they will be better off holistically.
I've stuck with them the whole way, but I have to say letting taupau go has really peed me off. Man, I love big Marty! He's one of the few reasons left I love the new items, and it feels like there is constantly less and less to like about the club I've supported for over 30 years.
I'm not happy! :imp:
