Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

Keep him and if he has signed for Manly for 2017 there is no need to play him excessive minutes and run on. It was rumoured at the start of this year he was sooking about being on the bench and not playing enough minutes. They tried this year and he was no where near as effective. He was devastating in short bursts off the bench and changed the momentum of games. Play him off the bench in 2016 and let him go become the Adam Blair of Manly

No way this bloke is worth $700k a year or anywhere near it. He is not an 80 minute player for a start. That said, I don't see why we should become a doormat for the likes of Manly. Make him see out the last year of his deal and use the time to look for a replacement. If he doesn't play well enough, drop him to Reggies. If Robbie's playing there too that's one comp we should do well in!

Agree not worth reported $700,000 a year, but the salary cap is its current format with the way 3rd party deals are structured is not a level playing field from a Wests Tigers perspective!! Until current system is more transparent or alternatively a player points system introduced the Tigers are up against assembling a quality playing roster to match any of the current top sides. :brick:

50/50 on this one… I'd love to see him playing here next year, but I also feel we will look stupider by not granting him the release considering the RF affair.

Clubs Call?![/quote

I agree, it would make us ridiculous. Trying to have it both ways, if he wants to go( and I don't want him to leave) they have no choice now , they have to let him.

They don't have to do any such thing. There is a big difference. One they want to leave and the other they want to keep. So yes indeed they can have it both ways and I'm hoping they will.

They can, to a point. They WANT to keep the one who wants to go. Who has a contract to play
But they also WANT to punt the other who wants to stay, and has a contract to play.
It's ok for the club to change their mind and get their way.
But they don't think that it's ok for a player to change his mind and get his way.

One could be excused for thinking that there's just a hint of a double standard here.
That's if there is any truth that Marty wants to leave.

Tapau was a reserve grader when he came here and has been given a run on spot which is not in the best interests of the team ,now wants to chase big dollars elsewhere.
The difference between the Farah affair and Tapau,s is that the club wants Farah to go with his contract dollars in his pocket, but he won't, they want Tapau to stay and offered him a 1.1 M extended contract to stay, so hold him to his contract and play him off the bench in 2016 where he provides the best impact for the team

Look here is an idea in regards to Taupau out of left field

I can't speak for all , but many of us seem to be questioning whether Taupau is worth 650 K under the new rules

If we keep him for the start of 2016 and see how he copes

If he is good we have 13 rounds to try and change his mind with an offer and gazump Manly

If he is not good we can release him prior to June 1 and try and get a trade from Manly

Thoughts ??

happy…...He won't be here next year .

Given the constant rumours and the lack of a unequivocal denial from Taupau or the club I too believe he won't be at the Tigers next year. He certainly has the potential whether he fulfils that potential remains to be seen as we know what he can do on a good day but he can also go missing in games (not to mention he doesn't play big minutes)!!

Usually I would not have any problem with the club letting a player go if they don't want to contribute however our forward strength for next year is a concern and I don't think it should be further depleted by letting him go. In any case I wouldn't assist Manly in any way shape or form.

Well for a start you need to keep up with the rules….Round 13 no longer exists.....A player now has a 10 day cooling off period once he has signed a contract to back out...that's it,,,

Secondly everyone knows how much I love Taupau BUT the reported 700K a season Manly are offering is way overs ...if he can get that coin good luck to him I say...look after your family..strike while the Iron is hot,,,

You can't really stand in his way...

This club is amateur as anything. Rumours came out about Soward leaving Penrith - next day there was at least an article from Gus explaining the exact situation and squashing the rumours.

The club needs to come out, sort out this Farah fiasco for good, sort out this Taupau situation quick smart and move on.

We have a loaded man in Harry T, he's not a sponsor anymore, he loves the club - the Tigers need to get in his ear and work out a deal to restore this club to its glory days. He gets to leave a legacy. He's our go to guy. Can I keep dreaming.

I do all the ironing in my house….ladies blouses are my specialty the trick is to turn the iron down and start at the pleats....

Were you asleep during the DCE backflip saga...the rule was changed within a week of the backflip so that fiasco could not happen again,,,,

Why would I care about DCE ??

Manly player and isn't playing for Qld , so he is a nothing in my books

Clubs will just find another way around it Geo in 6 months time

Players will start claiming there were too stressed while making the decision

I would suggest the ONLY reason the Wests Tigers would release Tapau early would be because we are STILL in deep trouble as far as the salary cap goes. If this is the case, I would also suggest that they would expect Manly to pick up all, if not the vast majority of his wage.
Perhaps this is what is delaying a comment from the club - negotiating exactly what the details of the deal are.
It is an absolute nightmare the financial mess this club is in! The idiots who OK'd these back ended contracts should hang their heads in shame - it's bleeding obvious that sooner or later you are going to pay for continually living on credit. Morons!
Say what you will about the new Board and Taylor, at least they have taken a reality check and are prepared to cop a heap of short term pain in order to restore a semblance of sanity to the club's financials.
