Martin Taupau - Discussion Thread

We still talking about Taupau?

He hasn't said a bad word about the club. He might have a bit of an ego but most of them do now. When you've been told you're all that since 12 years old you tend to get a big head.

Good luck to him at Manly, hope he performs to his pay packet, except for when he plays us.

He was playing state cup up until last year.

What's that got to do with anything?

I agree, when he plays against wests-tigers, get up and on him.
No room to move. Give him a bit of niggle, and he will go looking for revenge, which will probably result in a few penalties going wests-tigers way.

Teams were starting to figure him out this season as well. Get up on him quickly so as he cant get any momentum and go low around the legs. It made him pretty ineffective

He was our best forward at getting us going forward so I think we will miss him. I don't know if he is worth what Manly are paying him though.

Marty certainly wasn't a go forward man. He was an impact, power player. Unreliable. Great when switched on, anonymous when switched off…!

Pretty hard to keep the emotions in check when you score a good try at an important time of a game

For quite a lot of weeks this year, the weststigers scoring any try was a marvelous feat.

Yeah true but even I was surprised by the stat we scored more tries beyond half way than any other side (13) in 2015

Don't know what that stat tells us.
Does it matter where they're scored from?
Sometimes I think people over analyse things which mean bugger all. So we scored them from 50 out….Does that mean the opposition will let us get close to the line so we don't score?
I'll miss Marty somewhat, but I think the kids will miss him more. He's a marketers dream really. Kids love his power, his look, his persona....but what have we got now in that regard? Hopefully someone else can fill that space.

Yeah probably true about that stat , I was just bringing it up as 851 seemed to be saying we struggled to score

However we needs victories in 2016 more than we need a marketers dream

We need to find a way to attract better quality players and having a marketers dream won't do that

Victories (and a far few might I add) are imperative

Aint that the truth - but us getting rid of Tapau won't equate to winning more I don't think. He could have been the focus in a pretty healthy marketing campaign. We need a few bucks as well.

Agree with you WD. He's a loss in every way imaginable. On the field and off it. :frowning:

Thanks for your concern Gal… I'll try too.

Totally agree.

Not saying Taupau cannot adjust his technique, but he started to get a bit of Fifita about him, when teams would swarm and he'd be looking for a fend rather than just making the yards.

That being said, 1-1 he's near impossible to stop… slow him down perhaps, but not stop cold. I always thought we should have used Marty a lot more on the kickoff returns, rather than lumberers like KG and Ava.
