Harry has recently been trying to negotiate a deal to buy wests tigers , he's prepared to pay overs but is asking for as much in return. All games played at homebush with an option to buy naming rights once the deal with anz expires, new leagues club based at homebush, team to be renamed sydney tigers or just the tigers. 1 game at leichardt and Campbeltown each year. Nrl is keen on the idea, as is balmain and even Ashfield cautious but are open to it, but understandably the magpies are not.

Sorry SS but you are badly misinformed. I am privy to what is actually happening behind the scenes and although I will probably be cut out of the loop after divulging this I have to say something after reading such drivel. The NRL and Wests Ashfields have had preliminary talks about Wests taking over the JV if Balmain are unable to meet their debt commitments. The name Wests Tigers and the logo are non negotiable and will remain. The NRL desperately want a major foothold in the Macarthur region and have asked Wests Ashfield to approach Wests Campbelltown to reconsider their decision to pull away from the JV. At this stage the allocation of games will remain the same but if there is an upgrade to Campbelltown or a new stadium is built in the Liverpool area all home games will be moved from inner Sydney. As part of the deal the NRL will assist with the Academy of Excellence in the Macarthur region and with the upgrade of training facilities at Campbelltown. The sticking point at the moment is that Balmain have 2 years to clear the debt hence the interim board. The NRL does not expect Balmain to meet the debt and wants Wests Ashfield to have everything in place to take over the JV for the 2016 season.

Serious question… Are the guys who run wests magpies today, different than the mob who ran them in the 1990s??

In other words, are they capable of running an NRL franchise successfully, or will it be more of the same incompetent crap that marred the magpie's last years if (or when) Balmain fold?

i'm not taking any side of the JV argument but taking all games out of innner sydney? i wish the new board and NRL the best of luck with this idea if they go down that route but i think it will fail. they're obviously trying to get on the front foot with the assault from other codes, hence the possible liverpool stadium getting built and getting in bed with the wanderers, but the big question everyone seems to forget is where is this money coming from? state and federal coffers are in the red and sports stadiums whether newly built or upgrades are off the table and of lower priority. unless you're in pm territory at the time (abbot for manly, howard for dragons).

our base should be anz with couple games per year at each of the suburban grounds.

From what I have been told the NRL are prepared to take a hit on crowds and support in the Macarthur region in the short term with the hope of a long term gain. Basically they have adopted the AFL approach of putting teams in areas they want as a stranglehold. As far as I know at this stage Wests Campbelltown are not on board and there is a fair bit of work to be done in this area.

The interim Board will indeed have their work cutout for them in the next couple of years. Much to do, lots of lobbying to be done, both commercially and with various levels of government.

i'm a little surprised wests campbelltown wouldn't be on board with this arrangement but obvioulsy there's more to this.

sounds like the NRL are ramping up their efforts against other codes, they've been on the backfoot for too long. will it work and will they succeed? only time will tell. i know if things don't translate on the field it will compound the hit they will initially have with crowds etc.

i mentioned the issue with money not being available from governments at all levels, looks like the NRL are going to dip in their pockets for this one.
plus, from all reports the next tv deal is going to be a monster one, the nrl will have buckets of cash to do a GWS with the wests tigers.

Does this mean balmain would no longer be associated with wests tigers?

No idea if balmain will still be associated with wests tigers, with the current situation i dont think they will unless some rich benefactor swoops in to save the day, think harry.

Neither the Tigers or the NRL would be stupid enough to remove Balmain from the joint venture.
I dare say doing that would mean a loss of over 50% of supporters.

Koukash has cancelled Salford's annual player awards for this year after being disappointing with the teams effort throughout the season.

I actually like his style, but he is about a zillion to one to buy wests tigers. Would need to convince the three ownership factions to sell to him, and I can't see that ever happening.

Here's hoping.

Rich men like Koukash would be very unlikely to have any sentiment to a club which they have never had any affilitiations with. To them buying a club like Wests Tigers would be like buying a stock share on the stock market. If they feel like it they would sell the club either to make a profit or cut losses.

Wonder if the reason for the board appointments being business type ppl rather than football ppl is for exactly that reason, much lobbying to be done.
