Mitchell Pearce

As far as Iam concerned the Chooks can sign up every so called super star they want, it just makes their final series bomb outs more enjoyable. One day they might get the message and try build team spirit and a great culture.

I don't know why the rest of us ( not just us) keep whinging about the Roosters, it's the NRL that should houlder the blame if anyone's rorting anything. If they're to dumb, or hesitant to wipe it out. That's their fault.
If the Roosters are rorting the system or if they are just smarter than clubs like us, well why don't we join them. Stop crying and figure out how we can Do it too. Only smarter!!!

We can whinge as much as we want. It will change nothing. Use the rules like they do
Above the board, or under it, I don't care anymore.
I just would like to see us getting smart enough to play them at their own game.
If Harry is our only source of TPAs, then we need to attract more of the Corporate suits to the clubs. That's the real place that they have it all over us.

What the Roosters are doing is totally within the rules, pay the players a small amount in their contracts.
Then top it up with huge TPA's, totally legal morally bankrupt.
We need to engage more corporate sponsors to the club to help with TPA's.
That will come with success on the field.

Although I believe this is what they are doing, it is not totally within the rules. To enable them to make lowball offers to premium players, and expect those offers to be accepted, they have to be involved (as a club) in organising TPA's and other non monetary benefits. Not within the rules at all, but apparently difficult to prove.
I would be interested to know what resources the NRL has at its disposal to investigate this kind of thing. Probably not alot.

Greenberg doesn't have enough intestinal fortitude to go after Nick's club.

He'd have a mountain of dirt on the NRL chief from his days at the dogs.

Harry still has been vetoed on private TPA's though since ceding sponsorship hasn't he?

Think about how many Subbies Harry has on all those building sites, the NRL couldn't stop some or all of them providing TPA's.
I think that Harry will kick some cash into the HT Centre of Excellence.

Sorry, ignoramus here and a bit off topic.

Why is Harry being treated this way? He just wants to help the club for goodness sake. If Uncle Nick can do it, why can't Harry?

Thats the whole point! If he is doing it to help the club, if it has ANYTHING to do with the club, any link, its illegal (well against salary cap rules).

People get the TPA's totally wrong. Its not third party deals that the club has organised, it has to have NOTHING to do with the club. the best way to understand it is to understand how it came about and how the rules (TPA) came into effect.

Years ago Craig Wing was told he couldnt play (ironically) for the Roosters because at the time he had a gig male modelling and a gig on a Pay TV fashion show. This money tipped them over the cap but Wing had got the gigs himself and at that stage he was told to give up the gigs or he cant play. That of course is a ridiculous situation and if a player can pick up a gig by themselves, seperate to his playing contract, good luck to him.

Remember this whenever someone says they want to ban TPA's. You cant, its a part of our beautiful capitalist system and if a player can earn a buck on the side, good luck to them, but it cant even smell linked to the club

I get that, the bit I don't get is how the NRL police or don't police the TPAs. For example, you often hear about a fallout between club and player between unpaid TPAs ("didn't get monies I was owed") whcih should technically be impossible because the club "has nothing to do with the TPA".

So if James Maloney is annoyed he didn't get his TPAs, club should not be at all to blame, because he engaged those TPAs himself and it's his own business. But that's never what we hear, we hear dissatisfaction about the club for payments that technically are not contracted.

Then there's lowball payments, which I recall Ian Schubert setting up protections against when Eels tried to sign Izzy Folau for a few bucks and a whole number of paper bags. So if Roosters tell the NRL they are paying Taukeiaho $150K, surely NRL say no way is that feasible and push back.

Broncos I can understand, 1-team town there would be plenty of TPA opportunities even in just local advertising. But Roosters, man it's a crowded market down here and somehow they still seem to have a roster of high-profile players.

Because can anyone truly tell me the endorsements that Roosters players give as part of their TPAs? OK Tedesco got a Nike ad, anyone ever see Boyd Cornder selling fridges or Latrell Mitchell championing shock absorbers?

We all seem to be saying that Easts are giving low ball contracts and high ball TPAs. This would be totally against the rules for contracting players as they have to be contracted at "market value". In other words you can't sign Cooper Cronk or James Tedesco at $200,000 and then fill their pockets with TPAs or the NRL, if they haven't gone to sleep at the wheel when registering Easts contracts, would have to refuse the registration of the contracts. It seems obvious then that other (secret) payments must be in play, not just TPAs.

If the club offer secret payments and players accept them (and I'm no lawyer) the laws about secret commissions might come into play.

The timing of the Nike endorsement seemed all kosher as well, with Tedesco's poorest form of his career thus far in the period leading up to it seemingly ignored.

Manly's secret weapon to recruit Pearce

The race is on for Mitchell Pearce's signature - and Manly have an ace up their sleeve in back-rower Curtis Sironen.

The pair played grew up together and are the best of mates, as were their dads - Tigers legends Wayne Pearce and Paul Sironen.

As kids, Mitchell and Curtis played plenty of backyard footy together - and Manly officials will use that relationship hoping to lure the Roosters star to Brookvale in 2018.

I don't think there are necessarily any 'secret' payments being made. If a club can work out what the NRL will accept as a minimum contract payment is for any given player, they offer that and no more. Thus they would get a premium player for that players minimum acceptable wage and reduce their cap exposure. At the same time though, if they expect to attract said player, they would have to organise a TPA or host of TPA's to augment the contract.
Ii I was speculating, it could work like this; Club CEO networks chasing potential TPA sponsors for future unsigned players. CEO compiles a list of sponsors and the $$ amount each is willing to commit. CEO therefore knows in advance who will commit what.
Through negotiations with target player, CEO knows how much said player wants in order to come to that club, for arguments sake lets say $100\. The CEO gets an in principle commitment from the player. Casual phone call from CEO to potential sponsor where he drops a comment about talking to player X. Voila, suddenly out of the blue player X is offered a TPA of e.g. $40\. Club offers a contract of $60 and everybody is happy.

TPA's have to be separate from the club so therefore if a player leaves a club he should still receive that TPA.

If that is truly the case and it isn't working then the NRL just have to value players and go from there. That should stop the rorts.

I spoke to a friend of mine who is a Roosters supporter, haven't seen him in a while.

He said, plainly "I was really pleased when we signed Tedesco off you guys, then Cronk was just the icing on the cake."

That wasn't the bad part, the bad part was he then said "we still need a top-line prop to round out the team, we are a bit light on up front, but at least we now have a million to play with since Pearce left."

I said you can't have another top-line prop, you already have a Kiwi rep and QLD Origin player and your team shouldn't be allowed to gobble up all the $1M players that hit open market.

He just looked at me blankly, like he didn't know what I meant. He then said "how come Tigers can't keep their star players?"

We had to steer the topic in another direction lest I hit him with the nearest blunt object.

You are very cynical formerguest which is a very good trait to have

Yep
I get this type of garbage from the many Bronco supporters up here. They believe that it’s their devine right to be in the semis every year.

Rubber figures for the rubber chickens?

Newcastle would be thereabouts for Pearce. They'd have the most money to throw at him. They'd probably be getting SKD, Guerra and Watson to all put in the good word.

They'd be pretty formidable next year with a half like Pearce.

But ain't his fun time in Sydney? Who wants to spend half their day in a car - Mason had no choice.

He'll probably get a million dollar deal of his own, Newcastle have money to burn. Hard to turn down that sort of coin.
