MOLTZEN? Thread

He may be taking out his frustrations on his own team mates. Moltzen is a good player … He is down on confidence, making lots of mistakes and given what happened in the off season, he is now a completely different player. I hope the old Moltzen comes back ... We miss him.

I can't speak for the modern game as the wrestle was basically non existant in the day

But you are really trying to do a few things when bringing the ball back and most of the things have been covered You want to try and mix it up when you bring the ball back Becoming predictable will get you hammered no matter what you do

Firstly I was taught to try and get into a position where the side could bring the ball up left or right As many have seen getting boxed into a corner is a bad thing , you'll be flat out making it to your 30 metre line by the 5th tackle

Secondly ,I was looking for some dragging their feet in a chase or moving up too quickly and then try and exploit a counter attack which obviously is win /win

Thirdly obviously making as much ground as possible whether it is you or a winger Some wingers you wouldn't let pass wind ,let alone the ball

So all the comments were right , but you can't expect Moltzen to bring it back 100 miles an hour because he will end up worse than he has when he did when he has been fielding some bombs of late

Mate thats a good post but I think most fullbacks bringing it back rarely get a quik ptb, they usually face with a set line of at least three four five defenders….thats why most bring it back as hard and fast as possible....the sets your talking about usually begin with a couple of good forward hit ups bending or breaking the line

Any way Ive seen his positives and he has a few, he can tackle and can throw a decent pass, even put players in holes on occoasion...and has speed.

My big gripe with him is his attitude and getting up his team mates when they err....it happens far too often

I dont see him insulting players on the field and it doesnt look like players dont like him…so i am not sure if there is much to worry about there.

As to the first point, i just dont think strong returns are central to judging the quality of a fullback. The modern fullback is a second 5/8 and has to be creative and skilful- which is why i think moltzen is a good fullback. But each to their own i guess. Hodgson was crucial to our premiership win and moltzen is very similar in style to him in my opinion.

I want moltzen to stop making errors, but dropping him isnt going to change that (would probably only shatter his confidence). Best to give him time and see if he can work it out. I think he will.

I disagree that Ryan isn't quick enough to play fullback. He looks a yard quicker this year and has shown pretty good pace IMO. I reckon Moltzen would have him covered, but only just. Ryan is better under the high ball though and is far more direct in his line running which I believe would be beneficial.

Cant agree with that. I think moltzen is much faster than beau. Beau may be faster than last year but no one would accuse him of being a speedy winger; whereas moltzen has genuine pace.

This happens every week - guys are taught to tackle around the chest to wrap up the ball and then try to sling the player into touch .
Even if he grabs his arm he's fine - it's when you get an awkward fend ,like this, and miss you look bad.
In the old days you went low and the momentum of your body in the tackle would drag them over the line.
What also worried me with this try (and just before this vision) is that Ayshford had him covered and pulled out to let Moltzen chase him.
Last year Ayshford would have caught him easy - maybe why he's not a run on centre if he's lost that much pace.
If so - how has he got so slow so fast?

For all his flaws (which are think are exaggerated by some members on this forum) if you take out Moltzen we lose a major attacking threat. When Reddy was at fullback with Moltzen off Benji ran the inside ball play that works so well and Reddy was brought down fairly easily, I think if Moltzen is on at this point he wouldve broken the line with his extra pace.

We would be a much easier team to defend against without him as the defence would know where Benji is going to pass, to Lawrence or a cut out to Lote. He doesn't have the option of an inside ball to the quick fullback and as good as Beau is he is no ball player so he cant pass out the back to him to set something up.

With Benji all but putting away his running game apart from broken play and Rowdy not in very good form, Moltzen is the X factor in our backline and give him a little more time and his flaws will improve, there has already been an improvement in bomb taking

Why is Moltzen being hammered from pillar to post for last weeks capitulation?

No one seems to be getting on Lawrence's back about some poor reads in defense

For once I am going to come to Moltzens aid Firstly he gets a great palm , it is in his face ,Moltzen would not of been able to see a thing and that would of been that

Secondly , you have to make decisions on how you are going to make a tackle as a fullback as you are the last line of defence

If Moltzen had thought that the cover defenders coming across couldn't catch the Parra support player , he has to go high and tie up the ball or the attacking player offloads and they still score anyway

Every fullback worth his salt has been made look like a mug in these types of situations

Don't forget Scott Sattler on Todd Byrne. Sattler never gave Bryne a chance to give him a face full of palm, he just dropped him.

I don't condone or agree with personal attacks on players, but Tim made a schoolboy error in that instance. However it's not the reason we capitulated in the last 13 minutes.Hopefully he will learn from it.

Sorry Furious I said if he thought that he may have needed to do that , that is why he would of gone high

You can see plainly that perception would of been clearly wrong , but it all happens so quickly you do take the wrong option sometimes as a fullback

Thats why having a top notch fullback is so important

If you watch the replay you'll see everybody else drop out after he started chasing - either he is so much faster than them it isn't funny or they just decided to leave it to him.
Sometimes a bit off help is handy if you get bumped off and have managed to slow the guy down.
Personally I would have taken his legs.
