The NRL has been hit with yet another off-field scandal with Newcastle centre Tautau Moga charged with common assault. Moga, 25, allegedly slapped a taxi driver twice in the head on Boxing Day in Newcastle and was subsequently charged by police on January 9.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Moga and another man allegedly were refused entry into a King Street pub before getting into the taxi. Moga will face court on March 21, six days after the Knights’ Round 1 game against Cronulla.

The Knights issued a statement on Friday afternoon.

“The Newcastle Knights were made aware of an incident involving a player on December 26, 2018,” the statement read.“The club alerted the NRL Integrity Unit at an appropriate time and are co-operating with the NSW Police. “No further comment will be made.”

Knights chief executive Phil Gardner didn’t rule out sacking Moga. “We have been notified of an incident and we expect the player to be charged if he hasn’t already been,” Gardner told the Newcastle Herald.

“We won’t take any direct action against the player until that plays out. My understanding is he slapped a taxi driver. “If he pleads guilty, than we will deal with it under our new behaviour policy .”Earlier this week, Gardner said the club had taken a new hard-line stance against poor behaviour after prop Jacob Saifiti was fined 25 per cent of his salary for bringing the club into disrepute following an incident outside a pub in early December.

Meanwhile, according to Channel 7, Knights playmaker Mitchell Pearce is also being investigated by the Integrity Unit following an assault at the wedding of Steve Roach’s son, Liam. Police are not investigating the matter at this stage.

And the Sharkies are in more deep water….

Hmmm who'd be a taxi driver? They must really piss people off. If I was one I'd get an ejector seat and a sunroof so when drunken fools like Chee Kam and Moga start carrying on it would be whooshka straight up and out through the sunroof!!

Pearce is a dud

It is sad this has occurred at a function for the Roach family attended by the Pearce family. That it has come to light is a bit disappointing but Pearce is at the back end of his career and a leading player at the Knights. He has to get off the drink for good and make the most of his remaining playing years.

Junior junior keeps dragging the family name through the mud. I feel for mum and dad. Okay was always going to be big shoes to fill in the squeaky clean department, but junior junior has excelled in the bad department. You wonder what he is capable of doing post football..must be as dumb as two planks

I’ve known more intelligent planks!

But he’ll go to rehab again, say all the right stuff and continue on his merry way.

If we want to change behaviour - footy and society, we need to set expectations and have consequences for actions. These buffoons who continue to live in a mythical world of “me” need to be suspended for long periods of time across the whole game.

Agree Steve - long suspensions from the NRL, ESL and France - only way to get through a thick brick.
