I have a feeling the players will move on from this quickly. Benji has been coached by Wayne and certainly gets on very well with him, he'd be pretty damn stoked to see him coaching the Tigers and I reckon that will flow on easily enough to the rest of the squad. The next few days should be interesting.

I’m probably asking too much but I’d love to hear some raw honesty from the players. I’d love to hear Reynolds on 360 say “ yeah we were really disappointed in the lack of integrity Ivan showed. He’s obviously not a man of his word.” Something like that.

Reynolds did say it would be shit having cleary here the next couple of years if known off to panthers. So did brooks.

I'd love to hear that as well Tiger Steve.
Willow, I still don't think it's a given we will get Bennett. I think his negotiations will the Broncos will drag on longer that ours with Ivan.

Massive challenge for him, maybe he wants to prove that he still has the ability to win.
Just have to watch out for the office girls.

Piss him off immediately! What a jerk!! Hypocrisy at its best. On the bus - what crap!!
Oh and by the way - yeah it was all a media beat up! Good one.
2 more years with us with no heart or plan for the future. He’s gone now. GET STUFFED IVAN YOU HYPOCRITICAL PRETENDER!

Well said. Could say a whole lot more but thats best left for behind closed doors where swearing wont upset anyone.

Mate I’m telling you now, I’m going to make it my personal mission to front this bloke face to face and tell him what a hypocrite he is. This jerk convinced players to move countries to buy in to his dream. He sold a rebuild dream to everyone and nicks off at first chance. Man, I’ve been annoyed and disappointed before by Tigers but this takes the cake. Ivan Cleary is the worst Tiger ever to represent this club.

Yep unforgivable. You don’t have to do much mate ….. he has sacrificed his reputation for what? To coach his son ..... really unbelievable. He is a future target for the press, the fans primarily from WT and Panthers and Rugby league people generally. If he fails to lift the Panthers to premiership he will never get another gig.
But I suppose his and his sons contracts will suck the Panthers $s dry.

Agree- and his 20 year old son may not overly enjoy having Daddy as his boss. 20 year olds are fickle. I know, I have one!

I am extremely disappointed in Ivan.
Cleary is clearly a dog who does not practice what he preaches.
In Wayne we trust (hopefully!)

Tigers set to part ways with Cleary and seal Bennett deal

The Wests Tigers are on the verge of striking a deal to release Ivan Cleary in the coming days as they move to finalise a long-term contract with super coach Wayne Bennett, potentially effective immediately.

NRL.com understands Cleary could be granted a release to join Penrith in 2019 as the Tigers ramp up discussions with Bennett about coaching the club from as early as next season.

It is understood the Tigers are willing to release Cleary in the coming days, with club officials of the view his position is almost untenable, but they are working through delicate negotiations with Bennett before signing off on their coach's release from the final two years of his deal.
\
\
Cleary has already committed to the Panthers for three years from the 2021 season.

Bennett still has another year to run at Brisbane, however the Broncos could be willing to part ways with the wily coach after recently informing him that his services wouldn't be required at Red Hill beyond the end of 2019.

The Australian reported on Wednesday that Bennett had expressed interest in the Tigers job. NRL.com understands matters have progressed a lot further this week.

Cleary's potential release from the Tigers would then result in him inking a five-year deal with the Panthers to coach the team which includes his son until at least 2023.

The Tigers have attracted interest from several coaches, including Bennett and Michael Maguire - a reflection of how far the club has come despite modest facilities and a lack of success on the field.

One of the sticking points in discussions with Bennett will revolve around money, with Bennett likely to have to take a substantial pay cut on a deal that is likely to be well less than a million dollars a year.

Given some of the criticism of Bennett in recent years, there's a feeling he may be willing to take a pay cut to still prove he has what it takes to lead a team to premiership glory.

The Tigers return to pre-season training on November 1, while Cleary is believed to be heading on an overseas trip with his family to Bali on Sunday.

Bennett will also be away with the English team for an international series against New Zealand in the United Kingdom later this month.

NRL.com revealed in August that the Panthers were interested in Cleary returning to the club three years after he was sacked by executive general manager Phil Gould.

Nathan Cleary, after playing a leading hand in the Blues' State of Origin series win in his first appearances in a NSW jersey, is considered the cornerstone of the Penrith franchise.

After extending his deal at the Panthers until the end of 2024 recently, the goal-kicking halfback told NRL.com his new contract had "nothing to do with my old man".

"I was happy to make the decision by myself. What happens in the future with dad is out of my control. I don't think I ever thought I was going to leave even with what was going on. I always thought I would stay and it would all work itself out eventually and yeah it did. This is a real happy place to be in at the moment."

This^
Now, everyone calling for Cleary’s head and for Pascoe to make a stand have to realise that the above scenario could not have been possible if we moved first. Alternatively if Ivan and the Panthers wanted to come to a favourable agreement it was never in their best interest to shoot first either.
We have just ‘possibly for now’ managed to turned the most screwed up scenario that our club would ever face and turn it into the biggest positive that we could ever imagine.

100% agree with this.
Potentially we may end up with compensation from Panthers and Broncos may also partly subsidise Bennett’s release. The potential players and sponsorship which Bennett brings with him would also be something which we would not normally have envisaged.
So provided we stay strong in our negotiations this is a massive positive for the WT club and us the fans.

Im going to say this again. I just can not see us getting any compensation from Penrith or Phil Gould.

We will be lucky if they take Ivan on full contract.

We have just ‘possibly for now’ managed to turned the most screwed up scenario that our club would ever face and turn it into the biggest positive that we could ever imagine.

What can Bennett bring to the Wests Tigers, hopefully stability and a chance of signing quality players at market value or below. Just hope he still has the passion to win.

Let’s not kid ourselves he may be on the ‘ ‘wane’ no pun intended but he is the still the most successful coach in the modern period.
Wayne succession rate of making the finals probably almost matches Ivan’s total winning percentage.
I think this is the equivalent to signing Tim Sheens if not better. Don’t get me wrong I was hoping Ivan was dedicated to a new life at the tigers but hell man life happens aye. I understand people’s disapointment in him but you’ve gotta be happy in life and if that’s what he wants to do well so be it.
This past year (Nathan, Ivan and Panthers scenario feels a lot like the same mess Parramatta found themselves in when Ricky pulled the pin on his 3 year contract and signed with the Raiders in year 2 of his contract. We are not the first nor will we be the last to have this happen to.

Gee..that was quick

Yes most players would love a chance to play under such a great coach. So there should be no real problems on that front. But also think that our roster will undergo a significant change for the better. Maybe not immediately but definitely before 30 June next year.

At first I was sceptical of a Bennett signing when it was first mentioned months ago but the more I think about it the more I like it. He would bring players, he immediately brings a level of respect to the club, he would want to prove a point and win a premiership but more than that he would be looking to build the club for the future. If he signs we are the winners from this imo.
