NRL axes bunker officials after 'pretty clear stuff up'
By Brett Graham

The NRL has axed the bunker officials responsible for awarding a controversial try to Cronulla's Jack Williams during the Sharks' 28-24 win over St George Illawarra.

Dragons coach Paul McGregor was left fuming after the match, calling for accountability within the ranks of officialdom.

With St George Illawarra in front 6-0 in the 10th minute, Sharks halfback Chad Townsend put through a grubber kick, with Jack Williams appearing to get his hand on the ball first to score.

Referee Grant Atkins sent the decision to the bunker, who awarded the try. However a different angle appeared to show Dragons fullback Matt Dufty grounding the ball first, meaning a line dropout would have been the correct decision.
Dufty competes for the ball (Fox League)

"Pretty clear, right?" McGregor asked at his post-match media conference.

"So how do they keep getting it wrong, and who's accountable for it? It's a stuff up. In the end, there's the difference.

"I think all you guys (the media) should make a song and dance and do something about it.

"Because it's not good enough."

Good on McGregor. Officiating full stop has not been good enough, great that he had the cajones to call it out. There should be more of it.
That call was horrendous, one quick look at it and they award it, when there was clearly a lot to look at. Yet there will be a referral that Ray Charles could easily see what the correct decision should be yet they will look at a slo-mo replay 7 times before coming up with an answer (which is laughably sometimes wrong in any case). It's not good enough, it costs teams' finals berths and all the money that goes with that through merchandise etc.

That try last night is precisely the reason why the bunker and the referral system was put in place. Almost impossible for the referee to adjudicate that in live time.
The bunker should have taken the time to look at it properly and they should have got that one right.
Sometimes you can cut someone a bit of slack when they get it wrong but in that instance those guys just didn't do their job.

Just another reason for Peter V'Landys to take extreme action.

The Referees, Bunker officials, MRC and the Judiciary are all incompetent and should be replaced.

These people are dragging the NRL down and smearing the name of the "Greatest Game of all"

There needs to be a school set up teaching consistency, fairness, to be unbiased plus to actually learn the rules.

We have had 81/2 rounds since the Covid-19 interruption and already 4 games have gone to the wrong team because of incorrect decisions. Manly twice, Canberra and St. George.

It is not good enough that Graham Annesley comes out on Monday and says, "oh! sorry the incorrect decision was made." These decisions cost teams two points, supporters, fans, TV viewers, the good name of the NRL (which it has only sometimes) and the clubs money.

Damn right....."IT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!"

Over to you Peter before the whole game goes down the drain.

It most likely has cost cost Wests tigers a semi final spot.

Ben galea is very ordinary at his job.

He sure is! Most of the stuff ups in the bunker have involved him in some way. Sometimes I think the former players make the worst refs when they of all people should really know better.

The most disappointing thing is that we would have still been in the 8 had the Dragons knocked off the Sharks...

That might be a step too far because we still control our own outcomes over the next 9 weeks. But i know where you're coming from. When I look at the draw for both ourselves and the sharks it does look like we might be going neck to neck for a spot in the eight. So the bunker has just gifted them 2 points.

At this stage of the competition these bad decisions can affect more than just the two teams playing that particular game.

We just have to win all the games we should win and a couple that we're not expected to win. That would make all the difference.

Yep clean the lot of them out, there is not one official who isn't inept or corrupt, imo. Put a broom through the place and start all over again with people who actually have a feel for the game and can do a decent job fairly.

These need to referee the games

That one was fooled by a giant dog.

We have been rorted by Gee and Cummins in recent weeks, obviously we can expect to pick up 4 undeserved points between now and the end of the season when the dodgy calls even out. Right?

There was also a crusher tackle against Ravala in that game. As bad as any in the WT/slime game. However Ravala didn't carry on like the scum - result - nothing - no penalty no caution. games a joke.

Annesley’s Monday address to the nation is like listening to Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon. Try’s to gloss everything over, tells porkies and nothing happens. Every week Sutton gets the no1 gig and every week he rides the favourite, every week Cummins stuffs up big time and they roll him out the next week.
As I said a few weeks ago, we might have some new rules and people are calling Peter V a saint, but nothing has changed with the nuts and bolts of the game.....it’s still abysmal

Yeah seems we’re always at the mercy of other teams results every year. We need to have our fate in our own hands and start winning some games! It was great the way we hung in there against top teams like the Eels and Panthers, but we still didn’t get the 2 points. It’s imperative for us to at least win the games in which we really have a chance, otherwise it’s hello 9th place once again and sweating on other teams to win or lose.

When the whole strike talk before the restart of season I was hoping that they would do it and get shown by amateurs that they aren’t as good as they think they are
