NRL crowds slumping...

I don't know but I find league a little boring now…back in 2005/2006 the game was quite free flowing with great attacking rugby league. But now I don't know just a litle stale...I find the NBA much more entertaining. Perhaps it's the wrestling and refing or maybe cause the tigers are going garbage...

Agree with you TSJ in that the game is becoming quite predictable and stale, not too much out of the ordinary happens from game to game each week. At least when the players could still punch there was always the anticipation of a stink breaking out, now it just seems very sterile. Also the NRL should look into ticket prices in regards to who is actually playing as the AFL do for certain games in Melbourne, so that games featuring struggling teams are cheaper ticketed than top of the table clashes. If that was the case then going to watch WT vs GC Titans you would get handed a $50 note for attending

Talking about different venues,pricing etc,one of the writers suggestions was…
Why not take a game to **Lidcombe oval** once in the year...WESTS Tigers v Manly,now that would be a great event,going back to the " fibros v Sivertails....

yeah lidcombe oval, a capacity of 20k is how to get attendances on track.

for comparison, ANZ AVERAGES more than 20k for regular season NRL games. around 22-23k.

the answer is to play more at ANZ as crap as it sounds for spectators and whatnot.

the long term answer is to build a 40k stadium out west and play a tonne of games there. Best of both worlds, lots of money like ANZ, but not playing in a crappy 83k venue not even a quarter full.

also take monday night games to suburban grounds like belmore, leichardt etc.

Too expensive for me to go every week.
$35 for 90 minutes is not value - NYC and the cup should be played before. Couldn't care less about entertainment, food or drinks.

Will not go to nights games - can't have it both ways. Either the NRL are for TV or the fans - the both don't go together.

In Sydney there are too many options - not so in Melbourne.

I think we're just a bit over the lack of authenticity in nrl.

I think there's a big mis-match between how the game is promoted and the way the typical fan feels.

It's a big outlay for many fans with families to go to games week in and week out. But yet, SOO, is promoted as the be-all-and-end-all of rugby league, is packed out with the mob who want to go to an event, not just another week in the nrl draw.

The "stench" around nrl with episodes like the arrogance and stupidity of the players like the Fifita brothers, SKD, Foran/DCE/Manly coach etc (and we could all name others….) makes the game look "fake" and reliant upon the old-guard like Rabs and Gus to somehow inspire us to believe otherwise.

In terms of authenticity their comments are BS, rubbish, disconnected with how many of us see expenditure on professional sport attendance is determined.

The game needs a massive shake up and a big exercise on finding out what exactly appeals to cash-strapped fans these days.

More of the same won't work and fans will continue to view from a distance until something inspires them to go to games because their team and their sport matters enough to pay for the experience.

Pretty much. The NRL is terribly run and I have no desire to give them my money.

1\. Getting anywhere in Sydney is a huge pain the ass. Our public transport is one of the worst for any developed city
2\. ANZ games. Last time I went to ANZ 3/4 of the crowd were forced to sit in the shitty corners where you couldn't see anything. If they allowed people to just sit wherever they wanted at ANZ it would make a big difference but either way ANZ stadium is crap. Allianz isn't that much better either.
3\. NRL is generally better game to watch on TV. Unless you are at a ground where you are close to the action you get more action on TV. By the time you've paid for transport, entry, pounded 8 beers, bought a hot dog and chips you've spent $75+. If I staying at home costs a 6 pack and the money you lose from TAB tickets.
4\. No biff. I used to love going to NRL games (particularly Origin) to see a brawl. One punch rule has ruined a huge part of what makes NRL awesome
5\. Culture. AFL everyone turns up to support their club. NRL people don't feel arsed due to the reasons above. Unless you change the culture you won't get the big crowds.

I'm going to agree with Paul Kent on his view on this

The shoulder charge on James Ackerman was very similar to the one on Kasiano

And the player got 8 weeks for that

Gould and Sterling should know better than that to try and feed off reigniting that argument

How are fans of the bottom clubs supposed to get excited when they repeatedly get dudded by the richer clubs? It gets boring after a while…

Look at the inequality of the judiciary, the salary cap + tpas, tv scheduling, developing juniors. If you're not rich you've got nothing to share.

Gotta agree BB, this garbage that all clubs have the same salary cap but the top clubs just manage their's better is utter BS.

I think the reason our cap is in a mess is because we are forced to pay overs or back end deals to try and stay competitive.

Until the NRL publish players salaries and compare them to their clubs salary cap it will remain unfair. I will even accept the real contract figures released without actual names if that keeps people happy. That way when I see that no Bronco, Bulldog or Roosters players earn over $300k From their club, I'll know how fair the salary cap really is.

As said by others, rugby league has become a TV spectator sport, the game is suited to TV, having said that the excitement of being at the ground and the crowd is still appealing to me. Nonetheless the reality of where the money is lies with fox and 9 plus the ability to subscribe at a relatively cheap price to streaming on mobile devices. It has become more comfortable and a lot cheaper and convenient for many to stay home and watch on TV. I can't see this changing any time soon and so I think it also adds to the argument of improving the quality of some of the traditional home grounds to cater for crowds between ten and twenty five thousand fans as most games attract crowds of this size. Such an approach improves the viewing for those who go to games, improves,the atmosphere at the ground and on TV. Use the larger grounds for major games that should draw larger crowds.

Get rid of Monday Night Football, If its on @ Leichhardt Oval, I cant get there on time. I am positive other People are in the same Boat, so it affects the crowd & gate, To easy to watch it on Fox & stay @ Home.
