Spate of blowout scores after rule changes worrying for NRL, Johnathan Thurston says

By Tim Elbra
Thurston worried about NRL blow-outs

The blowout scores sparked by NRL rule changes are bad for fans and becoming a blight on the competition, legendary playmaker Johnathan Thurston says.
While two games have been decided by field goals in Round 16, the others have been routs. The Storm beat the Roosters 46-0 on Thursday, before a staggering Saturday that saw Manly thrash the Bulldogs 66-0, Gold Coast smash Canberra 44-6 and Newcastle hammer North Queensland 38-0. Raiders fans were seen leaving midway through the second half, with the contest essentially over.
The six-again rules introduced by the NRL have created devastating blocks of momentum within games from which even decent sides can't recover. ARLC chairman Peter V'landys was behind the rule changes and is facing increasing criticism.
"Teams are getting exposed," Thurston told TODAY on Sunday.

'That's what the rule changes were designed to do, score more points, but with that we're seeing a lot of blowout scores. It's a worrying trend for the NRL.
"We're seeing photos of the Canberra fans walking out with 25 minutes to go. It's not good for the fans, going out there, paying their hard-earned cash and seeing their teams get absolutely hammered each and every week.
"I don't know how we stop this trend. That's what happens when the NRL makes changes to the rules and this is a consequence of it."
Fellow rugby league great Peter Sterling said that the momentum handed to teams with six-agains was proving an unstoppable force.
"It's like trying to put your finger into the dyke wall; once it starts coming at you, the deluge, it's just so hard to stop the momentum and the good sides are running up big scores," Sterling said on Sports Sunday, pointing out that even teams like the Roosters and Raiders were being crushed. Canberra inexplicably conceded three tries while the Titans had a player in the sin-bin.

Manly recorded their biggest-ever win in putting 66 points on the hapless Bulldogs. Thurston said that the hot form of fullback Tom Trbojevic, who scored another hat-trick, had made the Sea Eagles a dark horse for the premiership; against the perception that it's a two-horse race between Melbourne and Penrith.
"With Tommy Turbo in your side, 100 per cent they're contenders," Thurston said.
"Their last four games, I think they scored over 50. This man is in a purple patch of form, Tommy Turbo, and it doesn't matter what jersey he's got on his back, he seems to make that side so much better.
"We've seen it with Manly and we've seen it with the Blues. He's the form player of the competition and I don't know how you stop him."

Reap what you sow V'Landys. Interested to see the tv ratings. If they fall he has well and truely stuffed up

NRL won’t listen to the average joes like us but if the betting agencies start losing money that’ll be a different story

First time I have heard a player say what we are all thinking - especially an intelligent one from a club usually inflicting the damage.

Today Alex Johnston 6 to 1 to score first try and AJ to score first and Souths to win 13 + at 7 to 1. The bookies might have had a bit of hammering lately with the blowouts.

Sports bet should now have a market for blow out of the weeks or how many blow outs a round

Broncos playing some good football.

We play them once & Dogs twice in the rest of the season, I can see us making a big play for the spoon.

For me it’s the incompetence of the refs that have been ruining the game for a long time...PVL will cope the blow just like turdburg....poor calls every game every year from the refs is what’s killing the game. Just my opinion
