Old glories help Dragons' Benji Marshall find NRL feet again

Watching videos of his glory days in a Wests Tigers and New Zealand jumper was the inspiration behind Benji Marshall's outstanding display for St George Illawarra last Saturday, the playmaker has revealed.
Marshall set up three of his side's six tries in the 30-0 win over Cronulla and had a hand in two more as he showed glimpses of his old form.
The former Kiwi skipper has endured a difficult return to the NRL since calling time on his ill-fated stint in Super Rugby with the Blues in April, and admitted his confidence was dented by the experience.
But after playing some DVDs of some old games last week, it made him realise he had gone away from the things that once made him the world's best player.
"I wasn't performing how I wanted to and I had to figure out why," Marshall said.
"I watched some old footage to see what made me a good player and I figured out a few things on the way and put them into place at the weekend."
Marshall made his name as a brilliant runner of the ball and, as he demonstrated, albeit against a weakened Sharks side, he can still use that speed to good effect.
"I think when you are a ball player, and believe you are a ball player, you forget what made you good," he said.
"For me that was my running game. Running into the line and combining that with playing a bit earlier.
"I wasn't attracting defenders and not doing anything for the outside.
"I just watched a bit of tape and saw the more I got myself into contact and played the ball, the better I played. I just need to try and keep doing that."
Marshall arrived at the Dragons with the side struggling to win games and with coach Steve Price under huge pressure to keep his job. He said he tried too hard to make an early impression – something he conceded was a mistake.
Price was sacked after Marshall's first game – a 36-0 loss to Parramatta – and the 29-year-old admitted it was not something he had expected.
"It was a difficult situation, not just for me but for the whole club … Pricey fought for me to come here so I felt sorry for him. He was one of the reasons I signed.
"The first few weeks I was guilty of trying to be good straight away ... trying to score off every play.
"At the weekend, I just wanted to build on the game a bit better, not put people under too much pressure.
"It was always going to take time, but I am not kidding myself. It was an under-strength Cronulla side we beat, but it was a step in the right direction."

**I am 100% certain Marshall said the exact same thing last year when he was playing like a busted for us..**.maybe he found a different set of tapes...last week Marshall was diamonds...this week he will be rocks...yawn...

Says it all though that he to watch videos of himself to "find out what made him a good player".
You'd think he would just know what made him good.

He was basically playing against a NSW Cup side

Wait until they are playing a Top 4 side

Hopefully that top four side is us at ANZ. I also hope for neither a rocks or diamonds performance that day, somewhere in the middle would be good.

I thought last weeks performance may quieten some of the bitter and twisteds ! Great to see him return to form

Exactly my thoughts when reading it. He'll want to watch himself though, skiting on about his dangerous return to form. The Panthers will want to shut him down big time on saturday, if they believe him. He might get hurt.

Bitter and twisted?? Why? Marshall media is one of the reasons I come here. It's always good for a laugh. Whether he plays well on occasion or not, the stuff that comes out of his mouth is where the entertainment is. Ask yourself the question what does he do most consistently walk it or talk it? If and when he walks it consistently, this thread won't exist.

Haha !!!!
Yeah that's true ….but some on here despise him and seem to get satisfaction in seeing him not play up to standard ... But you're right ... It's great entertainment !

How many first graders were Cronulla missing Knuckles? 10? 11? I'm a firm believer that you can only play what's in front of you but he blitzed a team full of state cup and NYC players. Last week gave us an accurate gauge on what sort of level Marshall is at now. And for him to blow his trumpet in the media based on one performance when he's likely to get absolutely slaughtered at the foot of the mountains this Saturday against the Pamfers will be absolutely hilarious.

THERE is one man who knows how to get the most out of Benji Marshall.

His name is Tim Sheens.

And a reunion could be on the cards with Marshall on Wednesday recommending his former Wests Tigers coach for the top job at St George Illawarra should current caretaker Paul McGregor be overlooked.

Sheens, who spent nine years as Marshall’s mentor, is being considered for the role along with Neil Henry, Tony Smith, Trent Barrett, and Wayne Bennett.

In a recommendation that will carry weight with those officials desperate to avoid being left red faced by Marshall’s $1.1 million, 30-month deal, the Kiwi playmaker said Sheens would be able to help resurrect the beleaguered club.

“I think Tim would be great for the club,’’ Marshall said.

“Especially with the younger guys. He has the knack of developing the young guys and teaching those fundamentals you need. He would bring that attacking style too which would be great for the club.’’

Marshall also said current caretaker coach McGregor “had what it took’’ to continue next year.

Heading into the fourth match of his NRL return after a failed stint in rugby union, the 2005 premiership winner revealed he turned to YouTube after having doubts about his comeback.

He also admitted his good performance against the Sharks meant little given Cronulla’s injury woes.

“It gave me some confidence,’’ Marshall said.

“I needed a good game and we needed a win. But I am under no illusions. They had their best 10 players out. I have a long way to go and I am working hard every week. Maybe I was trying too hard to be great straight away.”

Marshall turned back the clock and studied old footage online in a bid to spark his attack.

“I wanted to see what used to work for me,’’ Marshall said.

“So I went to YouTube because I really didn’t know how else to find them. There were a couple of things put up by Tigers fans and I had a look. I had a few doubts the first couple of weeks and I thought it would help to look what I was good at.

“And it was simple. I was good at running to the line and committing defenders. I did that on the weekend. I ran to the line and committed defenders and opened up space for others.’’
Marshall biggest rugby league weapon was his speed.

His ability to dart through the line created mass defensive confusion. Benji

Marshall admitted he has slowed down over the years, forcing him to become a ball player.

“I struggled with a toe injury and it held me back with the speed stuff,’’ Marshall said.

“But this year I have gotten a bit quicker but I think you just loss a bit with age. That was my biggest weapon and I have had to change my game to accommodate the things I am lacking. But I still have the pace to get through holes and get away. I am just not as quick as I used to be.’’

Marshall denied being overweight at 91kg and will be looking to play safe as he finds his form.

“I am just trying to stop my errors,’’

“I am limiting those (high risk) plays.’’

Nah when he was with us he said he took a shower and thought about life or some rubbish

That would've been back in the soap on a rope days .. Benji had the soap and MOLTZEN held the rope .

And the soap opera continues.

If the Dragons are daft enough to hire the organ grinder to go with their monkey, could this partially settle our debt with Sheens?

1 game vs an extremely understrength side and suddenly he's back to his old form?
