I recently watched the Loudest Voice on Stan about Roger Ailes' sexual misconduct. What I find disturbing outside of his vile behaviour towards women was his complete disregard for Jounalistic ethics when establishing and running FOX News in the US. The bias reporting that has been allowed to flourish around the world in the chase of ratings is a poor reflection of the society we have created.

The largest fear I have for society moving forward is that FOX News etc are only the tip of the iceberg, more people source and consume their news through Facebook and Twitter etc. These organisations have no responsibilities to the accuracies of the information their sites are spreading, and actively target information to uses based on algorithms that create and echo chamber where people are only provided with stories that confirm their already held beliefs. In a large number of situations this information is just lies that then people believe and spread themselves.

An interesting speech to watch was Sasha Baron Cohens criticism of social media and the role it plays in distorting facts and spreading fake news!

"They would have let Hitler buy ads!"

I like how Sasha bent the knee to his masters. This is the guy that for 20 years made fun and got incredibly wealthy off those subjects one dare not speak of today. Good little Sasha, just read the script they prepared for you. Hypocrisy is thy name.

Like all good lefties, censorship is the way to go.................but only if i get to decide what to censor.

bravo.

It is not about censorship though, its about companies like Facebook and Twitter taking responsibility for what they are publishing. If a major newspaper published stories denying the holocaust they would be lambasted world wide as it is an out and out lie! Facebook is allowing it's platform to be used to deny the holocaust daily!

Really appreciate the comments tonight. As I said I’m a bit knocked around by this as I didn’t know the depths of my friends despair. She’s ok now though so all good.
I have only met face to face one person on this forum but I’ve found tonight’s responses to my post comforting - thanks for that.

This is actually quite a supporting place, we often have our differences here but I have been lucky enough to have had comments and the support of other members on here help me through some difficult times.

You come across as a really genuine and quality person, I am sure your friend appreciates the support and that is why they were comfortable in talking to you about their situation.

@Tiger_Steve, so sorry to hear what your friend went through. I hope your friend and yourself are OK and remain so.

Reporting both in mainstream media and social media can range from very good, researching the facts and the people involved to absolutely despicable, just making anything up to generate income with little or no regard or respect to those involved.

Unfortunately there is little recourse In Australia to the latter, unless you have very deep pockets or find someone who would be willing to provide a low cost lawyer service.

Something certainly needs to change in this regards but unfortunately the Govt. seems to be trying to head in the other direction making it even harder to make reporters accountable for what is published.

Thinking of you and your friend and please reach out if you ever feel the need to. Let your friend know that I am disgusted in how they were treated and that they deserve to be treated better. No one should have to go through what they did.

We are all human beings and we are all unique and worthy individuals. It’s our differences that makes life interesting.

The current government are complicit in increasing the deception to the public as the last fortnight has again shown to anyone without party blindness. Then after the parliamentary year finished, their leader went to a party for the serial peddlers of untruths and political mouthpiece in the Murdoch's.

Agree with most of the above, but unless our club actually speaks to someone we have no hope of getting any idea on what they think about anything.

If you think Murdoch is the only serial peddler of untruths then it’s because their publications don’t suit your personal views. It would be pretty hard to find any major media company that is straight down the middle these days. There are just as many (more) that flog a left wing agenda. I worked in the media my whole life and it’s nothing like it used to be.... all opinion and not much news these days.

Pretty simple really, just ignore pretty well every story from all forms of Murdoch media and stick with Auntie.

Now that is fake news.

I used to enjoy reading Big League for the team announcements, and Rugby League Week magazine for the game analysis and stories. Unfortunately with the onset of digital media, those printed versions weren't able to change to the new medium and now it's all different. As you've said mate, it's not reporting on what's happening it's trying to win clicks by saying outlandish things so they can charge more for ads.

Im sorry your friend had to go through such a hard time. I'm with you in trying to avoid certain media sources as they are toxic. Daily Telegraph and anything Murdoch owned is not worth the bytes it's stored in.

Media standards have dropped so far. When an article is an opinion piece or advertising it should be clearly stated at the beginning of an article.

Unfortunately click-based and advertising media is so dominate and intertwined with the news it is hard to differentiate. That with the fact that nowadays anyone can be a journalist without a degree has totally undermined the public confidence in news media. They are at serious risk of making themselves redundant.

Its all about censorship.

Facebook, Twitter and Alphabet (Google, YouTube) will soon have to make a decision on whether they are publishers or platforms as they are currently enjoying a little from column A and a little from column B with zero consequences. However, they can't continue to have it both ways. As they are US companies the 1st amendment applies which is why there are so many law suits currently pending. If they are publishers they are responsible for what is published and all current publishing laws apply, or they are a platform and aren't responsible for any content and all speech is allowed, however they do heavily censor users and accounts that do not fit their left leaning or right leaning ideology thus they appear to be more of a publisher then a platform.

With the exception of a direct call to violence I'm an advocate of any and all speech. The answer to bad ideas and the curent it term "hate speech" isnt censorship and expulsion, it's more speech, better ideas and pointing out facts and evidence. Whats wrong with discussing abhorent ideas to point out the obvious flaws? To simply want to ban it elevates the idea to a taboo subject and gives it more appeal to some then to simply pick it apart piece by piece.

Nothing should be censored. I'm a firm believer in the marketplace of ideas.

Wiki -
The marketplace of ideas is a rationale for freedom of expression based on an analogy to the economic concept of a free market. The marketplace of ideas holds that the truth will emerge from the competition of ideas in free, transparent public discourse and concludes that ideas and ideologies will be culled according to their superiority or inferiority and widespread acceptance among the population.

The more people who are involved in media ownership and the more outlets the better the balance of both news and opinion. We are unfortunately going through a stage of more outlets being owned by less people. It is not good for democracy and is even being made harder because of a government that wants to castrate some media that can be critical of their actions.
When police are used to raid the media we are heading into a very concerning development.

I agree on content that they are not alone, though it has nothing to do with personal views. The big problem being that particularly here in Australia, Murdoch has long had huge influence with the traditional forms, which was exacerbated into a stranglehold with the relaxing of media ownership legislation.

I actually agree with you about allowing all speech the problem I have with things like facebook is in reality it does the opposite. Due to the algorithms that they use people are onky exposed to the ideas that they already hold which confirms the often misguided belief that they are right. We have spoken here about the medias responsibility to give a fair and balanced coverage to both sides of an issue. Due to facebooks algorithms rhat is almost impossible.

Years ago they were called Newspaper reporters, they reported what actually happened.
Nowadays they are called Journalists who tell their own story, or whatever slant suits their employers political view.

Journos reporting on League nowadays think that they are either TV stars or radio stars. They have lost the art of true journalism but prefer the limelight and trying to boost their egos.

I've cancelled my News online subscription largely due to the fact that there are no real facts presented anymore. However, on my online news feed there is a story in The Daily Telegraph today about The Westsigers top team of the past decade.

Does anyone have this list handy?

FWIW Here's mine (It won't be pretty)

FB Tedesco
W Nofo
C Lawrence
C Ayshford
W Tuiaki
5.8 Benji
1/2 Brooks
P Woods
H Farah
P Fifita
2R Ellis
2R Sironen

Naturally some are debatable, but definitely couldn't have Fifita in that side based on his time at the club, though for the following year's form, sure.

Wouldn't have Siro on that criteria either.
