Yeah....brutal. Two generational FBs and somehow we ended up paying Mbye 800 to play 1 and fail.

Nothing we can do now though.

jesus, its bleak when you put it like that!

Revisionist history here, just like with Ivan. Of course Tedesco was a priority, and if the club had its time over again, I’d hope they’d still do the same in putting all their focus on him. It’s just unfortunate he strung the club along.
It is usually easy to be Monday morning quarterback!
At the time we had our 'big 4', and were hoping to get Cleary.
Papenhousen played 5/8,. and we had Tedesco at the FB.
Surely, we could have done better, but I would be more critical how we lost Koroibete, and JAC after him.😛ersevere:

Been there done that. He was offered to clubs 18 months ago and no one wanted him, credit to him he's picked up since then.

Imagine the uproar if in 2016 the club said "sorry Teddy, we're not going to make you an offer, we have a 70 kg fullback coming through". Paps signed elsewhere while we thought Tedesco was going to stay.

It sucks but you have to grow up and suck it up. Sometimes stuff like this happens.

If you were Papa and Storm flew you down to Melbourne with your parents, Slater and Smith give you a guided tour before Bellamy talks to you and your parents of how you will fit into their system, learn from Slater and be part of a winning culture, bloody hell you would sign your life away. Melbourne recruitment system is second to none.

And where is our self belief? Are we so down on ourselves that we can't fall back in our own proud histories? I'd be pretty impressed if I were a junior and the WTs brought out a few of our own greats - Dorahy, Jack, Brasher to meet me and detail our plans for the future.

Ha ha. I love Dorahy, but he doesn't have quite the same impact as Slater and Smith. I'm not sure the average 18yo would even know his name.

That is so depressing to read... don’t swear, don’t swear, trying not to swear... oh...

Stuff like this happens to WTs. And weight has noting to do with it. You will often find SAS troopers are the wiry types. Very very tough as is Papenhuyzen.

I always knew once Melbourne announced the signing of Papenhuyzen that he would be Billy Slaters successor. Just had such eiree timing about it. Plus the kid was the only specialist fullback on Melbournes books.
Scott Drinkwater, 20s 5/8
Jarome Hughes, Halfback/Five Eight.

Sure he’s a good player, but he’s not a generational player. I spit my drink reading that.

He's far better than good. He was a champion junior and his senior career is consistent with his junior ability.

We got it horribly wrong and he was the one we should have concentrated on keeping.

You have it horribly wrong.
He left. It was not an Addo-Carr scenario where he signed with another club. We had Tedesco near in agreeing to an extension. We had no spot for him in first grade.
Of course we would of loved him to stay had we known Tedesco wasn’t.
The club did stuff up by having both off contract at the same time. But that is all.

If a fullback has two players running at him/her, you expect the fullback to take someone.

Only WTs could manage to stuff it up so badly!

Weight has a lot to do with it. How many 80kg players do you see in rep teams? How many others are even consistent NRL players.

Maybe they all retire and become SAS troopers, but there are not many top NRL players the size of Paps. Paps made it against the odds, good luck to him.

Wasn't Thurston recommended to our club but considered too small?

I think at first he was let go by the Dogs for that very reason...I think the conversation at the Dogs went something like this...""Yes Thurston is talented but he is to small to make it at NRL level""...

Hows that for an error of judgement from the Dogs.....

Thurston was well over 80 kg.

We've been one of the few clubs that kept signing lightweights and it's been part of our problem: Fulton, Halatau, Thompson, Utai, Mahe etc.

The good thing about Madge is for the first time in our history he seems to be bringing in players with a physical presence.

Because we have a heart for plodders 😂
