Been there done that. He was offered to clubs 18 months ago and no one wanted him, credit to him he's picked up since then.

Imagine the uproar if in 2016 the club said "sorry Teddy, we're not going to make you an offer, we have a 70 kg fullback coming through". Paps signed elsewhere while we thought Tedesco was going to stay.

It sucks but you have to grow up and suck it up. Sometimes stuff like this happens.

Stuff like this happens to WTs. And weight has noting to do with it. You will often find SAS troopers are the wiry types. Very very tough as is Papenhuyzen.

Weight has a lot to do with it. How many 80kg players do you see in rep teams? How many others are even consistent NRL players.

Maybe they all retire and become SAS troopers, but there are not many top NRL players the size of Paps. Paps made it against the odds, good luck to him.

Brett Hodgson anyone? Fantastic player, but probably only 150lbs wringing wet. Preston Campbell, Matt Bowen, Johnathon Thurston - he was no slouch, Geoff Toovey, Allan Langer, Ben Barba...

Melbourne recruitment system is second to none.

And where is our self belief? Are we so down on ourselves that we can't fall back in our own proud histories? I'd be pretty impressed if I were a junior and the WTs brought out a few of our own greats - Dorahy, Jack, Brasher to meet me and detail our plans for the future.

Most of the kids wouldn't know who those guys were.

Wasn't Thurston recommended to our club but considered too small?

I think at first he was let go by the Dogs for that very reason...I think the conversation at the Dogs went something like this...""Yes Thurston is talented but he is to small to make it at NRL level""...

Hows that for an error of judgement from the Dogs.....

I think it went more like.... "after that trip up to Coffs Harbour, we need to distance ourselves from Mason and Thurston, and try salvage our clubs image"

In and out of first grade, I don’t think that makes him rep level or a consistent nrl player.

He was given a proper go this year and he has excelled, before he would get a week or 2 here and there

Yes, and after 3 years you are not getting a look in. You are sitting behind Slater and Drinkwater and being told that you have no future at the club. You are being shopped around and being told to look elsewhere, By a stroke of luck (or this Voodoo dolls you have spent hours sticking pins into) suddenly everyone that you are competing with is injured and you are thrust into first grade.

Suddenly you are a star and fans of your previous club have you front and centre in their lament thread.

Their are a couple of clubs whose recruitment is second to none. They have no juniors and sign anyone that appears to have ability from other clubs. 90% of those players never play first grade for anyone, but those 10% that do, and the 1% that turn out to be very good are proof of a great recruitment system.

The truth is Melbourne are just a much better club than us. They have 3 first grade quality fullbacks on their books, and 3 first grade quality hookers (including Grant). They don't put their hopes into one player and always ensure they have a contingency plan. If none of them leave, they find space for them in the squad. That's why they're so successful.

Papenhuyzen was our contingency plan, but instead of keeping him and trying him on the wing or at centre or at five-eighth we rolled the dice with Teddy and lost big time. I remember Paps being talked up as quite a talent but everyone was so sure Teddy would stay so we wouldn't need him. Now we look like fools thanks to Jason Taylor.

It's time to move on. Hopefully we've learnt our lesson and don't let go of quality players anymore just because we already have a first grade starter because we all know contracts aren't worth anything these days.

Was it Tommy R or Dennis Tutty who recommended Thurston to WTs when he was young?

We turned him down due to his weight/size?

It's the fight in the dog, not the size.

Thurston, Papenhuyzen we don't need them at WTs, Rankin and Co. are just fine.

So now we should have had Thurston. Keep digging, I’m sure we were offered Munster and Cronk as well, but we said no too small, maybe even Cleary left because we weren’t willing to sign his son.

No need to dig. Papenhuyzen is a star whom should have been playing for WTs. Those involved in his non signing couldn't locate a boil on their collective arses,

if teddy had been fairdinkum with us we would have kept paps, storm bought him as depth signing only and injuries got him a start.
He never wanted to leave us but he had teddy infront of him

He had Slater in front of him at Melb though. I think any young kid that gets an offer to go to Melb just goes. More so if your at a club like ours.

paps wasn't gonna be in first grade with us or with melbourne. but he chose to still go to melbourne.

yeh we can all blame woods/moses/teddy/sironen/taupau etc for leaving but at the end we need to learn how to deal with players. need to address their concerns and act on it. yeh, teddy left after we spent all the time and money nursing him through injuries but all that matters little if the player feels he's not gonna have the support he needs. I genuinely still feel like we were victims in all this but need to stop with this mentality. Invest in good facilities, get those "mind coaches" out there

Not sure what the point of this thread is...is it to get various spelling's of Papenhuyzen
