Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter Beattie will stand down from his position in February and is expected to be replaced by NSW racing supremo Peter V’landys.
Beattie told the ARL Commission on Wednesday that he would not seek reappointment when his term expires early next year, AAP understands.

He is expected to make a public announcement as early as Thursday.

The former Queensland premier has backed Racing NSW chief executive V’landys to take over and he now appears the clear frontrunner for the post.

Beattie has been a highly-controversial figure in the game since taking up the job in February last year.

He was widely pilloried for a series of gaffes including his failure to name the Cronulla Sharks when asked which team played out of the Sutherland Shire by league identity Phil Gould during an interview last year.

However he has also spearheaded important reforms, including the introduction of the “no-fault” stand down rule.

After a summer marked by ugly headlines, Beattie pushed through the rule - which allows for players charged with a crime which carries a jail sentence of 11 years or more - to be stood down while their legal case runs its course.

V’landys received a ringing endorsement from Beattie when he met with his fellow commissioners and he is the odds-on favourite to become his successor next year.

It’s believed Beattie’s decision to stand down is linked with his determination to push through constitutional reform as the commission seeks a replacement for Mark Coyne.

Beattie is seeking to scrap the rule which prevents any person from being elected to the ARLC if they have been involved with a club in the last three year.

It’s understood Beattie believes the decision will make him unpopular and the game needs a fresh start.

V’landys, who was elected to the independent commission earlier in the year, this week said that if he took on the job, he would be capable of staying on as Racing NSW CEO.

He has been credited with revitalising racing in the state and was the brains trust behind the introduction of The Everest, the world’s richest race on turf.

Beattie is an imbecile.... Dont know how he became Premier of Qld, dont know how he became NRL chairman. If I had to guess his area of expertise, it would be the flavour differences between different colours of crayons.

He became the Premier of QLD because they are experts on imbecies...and crayons

V'landys will be good an actual smart operator

Yeah he's done some good things for horse racing in NSW, definitely an upgrade on Beattie.

Ive heard a couple of people say that Vlandy holds people to account and doesn't suffer fools. Nice knowing you Todd.

V’landys is a top operator and connected in all the right places. He has no problem getting his way when ever he wants something. Well connected to pretty much anyone that matters. Will be a top operator.

@the_third I knew him back in the Days when he was in charge of Harold Park Trots. He is a top bloke and will Make the NRL Great Again!

Reckon that abolishing the 3 year qualification rule is tied to getting rid of that bald galoot and wouldn't surprise if Gould is the one ready to be appointed.

The 3 year qualification rule of no Club involvement is for election to the Commission board..

CEO of the NRL can be removed and replaced at any time with anyone suitable

A few in the media have mentioned canon Quayle. It would be great to have an expansionist on the board.

Can they stuff it again? The last 3 chairmen have been gibbering morons who have taken the games popularity backwards

Not so fast on toddy following Beattie out the door....

Speaking on Nine's 100% Footy, Weidler said there was a growing disillusionment around the game concerning the Greenberg-Beattie leadership.

"There's been a lot of talk and a lot of disquiet about the performances of Peter Beattie as chairman and Todd Greenberg as CEO, and there are people who want both of them out of the game," Weidler said.

"The most likely scenario we're going to see is Beattie will be gone by February. Peter V'Landys will be the new chairman of the game. And you'll find that Todd Greenberg will be offered a couple more years if he wants it.

"At this stage I am hearing, and who wouldn't because he's getting paid around $1.25 million-a-year, he'll probably accept that.
