Politics Super Thread - keep it all in here

It's a sad indictment on Australian politics that Abbott was seen as the best option to lead the nation in the first place. Both sides of the fence offer nothing. Shorten is a dead man walking now, his chances of winning the next election vapourised last night. You could almost see the tears in his Twitter feed.

so happy.

When it was announced last night we popped the champagne bottle from our balcony to the sound of others cheering from theirs and cars tooting horns! Love it!

Politics in this country is an embarrassment. How many times are we gonna see some greedy self obsessed mongrel take the prime minister ship by force?

Yes but when it is a massive step up from the last bloke you can live with it

Garbage Turnbull is a nuffie. Weak as water.

He will go down as the shortest serving PM since Harold Holt, and how appropriate. By all rights even though he lasted one month longer than Harold Holt, he should have the record outright as the circumstances around Holt were different. He was never voted out by the people or punted by his own party.

Abbott was punted by his own party, not even 2 yrs in. Even Gillard and Rudd lasted longer. Could not happen to a nicer guy. I don't care much for politics, and don't have a preference for either party, but the arrogance and ineptness under pressure of this man knew no bounds. He was never deserving of his position and thoroughly deserves the humiliation he copped tonight and title of shortest serving PM as a result. And if that wasn't already sweet enough, he also has no entitlement to any permanent PM benefits. He should be flushed down the toilet and never heard from again. Good riddance.

You said you knew nothing and just proved it.

If the leaders we had in place were competent, we wouldn't have to worry about it. And there's no doubting this country and its image will sky rocket virtually overnight now that this clown is gone regardless of which party is in power.

No the opposite will happen. Once again the world is laughing at us

So Tony was a great leader who was a great ambassador for our country?

It's been a laugh a minute for the rest of the world since that dope was elected. When the yanks are taking the Mickey you know you've backed a dud.

For all this talk that Turnbull is as weak as water, where does Tony stand? He's ball-less. If he had the conviction that all the far right are proclaiming, he'd have stood by his medicare co-payment policy. Instead, he dumped it as soon as he realised that the electorate weren't going to cop it.

Abbott was being pressed about the state of the economy (which has gone backwards since the LNP came to power,) and his response? Ummmm ahhhhh, we stopped the boats ummmm ahhhh repealed the carbon tax. He is utterly clueless and the LNP finally figured it out. Imagine if they'd had a half decent candidate last election, the ALP would be in the wilderness for two terms.

Turnbull is a proper old school centre-right Liberal. The LNP have lost their way as badly as the ALP. Turnbull is the first step in correcting that. Now the ALP have to pull their finger out, get rid of Shorten and provide a viable alternative. The party will have to fall in line now as Turnbull is popular with the moderate Libs and centre to left, and he is the only thing saving them from a wasting next election.

GNR I don't think he was a great leader but he was heavily up against it. Popularity wise here he was poor but overseas he was respected.

I didn't like his church based views on things but sacking another PM makes Australia look weak overseas.

From where I sit it is a great day, Abbot was a diabolical leader. Turnbull although born with a silver spoon seems to be far more in touch with the people. I still think labour will win the next election but now they will have to work very hard for the right to govern and that will force them to come up with quality policies but if Abbot was still the leader all that had to do was show up on polling day.

Another captain sacked mid contract!!!

Lol CB Turnbull Is not Centre right he is more left than anything.
He also had a ridiculously bad record last time he led.

No he's not. He's socially progressive, and economically liberal. Compared to the likes of Bernadi and Abetz he looks like a socialist, those blokes wouldn't look out of place in the US Republican party. Turnbull is this generations Fraser really.

Being socially progressive is not mutually exclusive to socialism.

He also had a bad record because the ultra-conservative right sought to undermine him at every chance.

If you count progressive as someone who panders to the vocal crowd then yes he is. He is just another self obsessed politician who is in it for himself. You wait he'l fall as well. The bloke is vacant.

Spot on in it for himself , self obsessed just like Bishop.

I guess we'll see.

If he was really in it for himself, I'd have thought he'd have stayed in the corporate world and continued to rake in millions. They're all in it for themselves in one way or another. The days of altruistic pollies are long dead.

Anyway if he's rubbing up the rusted on ultra-conservatives he can't be all bad.

PM looks good on your resume even if you're already wealthy.
It's a legacy thing…
